HAPPY BIRTHDAY
SAM WINCHESTER!
And in honor of your birthday today, the first issue of Supernatural: Origins hits the comic book stores!
So what are YOUR opinion's on Sam's birthday? Does Sam like his birthday? Hate it? What about John? Do you think he ever made a big deal about his youngest's son's birthday? And what about Dean? Think he does something special for his little brother?

Date: 2007-05-02 07:07 pm (UTC)Alright, I'll be the first one to comment here for my boy Sammy's birthday. Goodness knows I love Dean to death (who doesn't?), but for some unexplainable reason I'm still a total Sammy girl and think I probably always will be.
As for if he likes his birthday or not...I'm not really sure. I'd guess he'd probably be mostly indifferent, and maybe a little sad. I bet Jess did something nice for him a couple of times, so it probably makes him miss her more than usual, and it probably reminds him, once again, of just how normal he isn't because he never had "normal" birthdays growing up. And John...I think he might have done something relatively big for the first few years or so, before he got totally wrapped up in hunting and was still thinking about giving his sons the life he had originally wanted for them with Mary. But after that, I'd say he probably didn't make it a big deal at all; he'd acknowledge it and give Sam something (practical, probabaly), but it wouldn't be a big deal.
I can't imagine Dean not doing something special for Sammy, though, every year. Even if it wasn't a big deal and was something small, he'd try to do something really special and meaningful. Though he'd do it in that familar Dean way, where he'd try to brush it off with sarcasm and joking and pretend that he's not getting all emotional over Sam meaning everything to him like everybody (including Sam) already knows he does. *grins*
Speaking of birthdays...do you think they'll ever acknowledge Sam and/or Dean's birthdays on the show? I'd love to see a little something, and it'd make for a good brother moment, I'd say. What do you guys think?

Date: 2007-05-07 05:26 pm (UTC)Hey, that's good! We need you guys around to balance out us DeanGirls. :-)

Aww, good point. I can totally see Jess making him dinner, giving him a gift.
and it probably reminds him, once again, of just how normal he isn't because he never had "normal" birthdays growing up
Yep, yep, very true. Maybe during his younger school years he got invited to kids parties at their houses and he knew he'd never have anything like that. Poor Sammy!
And John...I think he might have done something relatively big for the first few years or so, before he got totally wrapped up in hunting and was still thinking about giving his sons the life he had originally wanted for them with Mary
Yeah, I can see John trying to do that but soon hunting consumed more and more of his life and things like birthdays fell to the wayside when there was a werewolf to kill.
I can't imagine Dean not doing something special for Sammy, though, every year.
I absolutely agree. You know all Dean ever wanted for Sam was to have that normal life, and birthdays would be a part of it. Do you think that while Sam was at Stanford that Dean maybe sent some funny card or some little gift?
Though he'd do it in that familar Dean way, where he'd try to brush it off with sarcasm and joking and pretend that he's not getting all emotional over Sam meaning everything to him like everybody (including Sam) already knows he does. *grins*
Oh yeah, typical Dean - can't show those chick-flick emotions, even though we know damn well they're right there under the surface. :-)
Speaking of birthdays...do you think they'll ever acknowledge Sam and/or Dean's birthdays on the show? I'd love to see a little something, and it'd make for a good brother moment, I'd say. What do you guys think?
Man, I truly, truly wish they'd do something like that - or a Christmas episode - something...domestic between them, how they celebrate things like that when you live in a car and motel rooms. Maybe next year? :-)

Date: 2007-05-03 03:02 am (UTC)But I don't think John was totally beyond doing something nice for his boys. Even soldiers have birthdays. Also, I wouldn't doubt that the days that Dean and Sam were born were probably two of the happiest days of his and Mary's lives. I don't think there is any way John would forget those dates.
Now, I'm not saying he'd stop in the middle of a hunt to have a party or anything. But he'd say 'Happy Birthday' and they'd celebrate somehow after the hunt was concluded. Maybe a cake, maybe a present, maybe a movie, nothing huge, but something. I think I said in another post in this LJ, that if he hadn't, there's no way that Dean or Sammy would even know when their birthdays were. Dean, possibly at four knew the date of his own birthday, but no way would he remember Sammy's.
I think Dean always remembers Sam's birthday and does something special. It might not always be something that SAM would think was special (I could see Dean hiring a 'lady of the evening' for Sam at 16 or possibly 18 *LOL*), But I think Dean always makes a big deal of it for Sam if he can. And for that matter, I think that Sam does the same for Dean, and they both try to do something for John.
So definitely Sam liked his birthday at least up until age 23, though some might have been bittersweet. But this year, I don't know. I don't think it's going beyond canon to say that Sam pretty much hates himself right now. He thinks that he was the cause of Mary's and Jess' deaths. He feels guilty about the way he acted with John. He thinks he's going to turn evil. He may or may not know that he tried to kill Dean when he was possessed. And if you hate yourself, then you're probably not too thrilled about your birthday.

Date: 2007-05-07 05:43 pm (UTC)I think that when the boys were still small, before John became so consumed with hunting that everything else became secondary, that yes, he'd somehow acknowledge the boys birthdays.

Yep, good point! So it stands to reason that John did celebrate them.

Bwhahaha! Oh, that's so totally a Dean gift!
But I think Dean always makes a big deal of it for Sam if he can.
I totally believe that Dean always does something for Sam on his birthday. He hated that Sam lost his innocence to the life that they lived, so to give him something normal, a birthday gift - yeah, he'd definitely do that.
And if you hate yourself, then you're probably not too thrilled about your birthday.
Wow, that's really heavy! But also very true. Hopefully Dean went above and beyond this year, to let Sam know that he's loved.
Happy Birthday, dear Sam...
Date: 2007-05-03 03:05 am (UTC)I don't think that the Winchesters have celebrated any birthday or holiday for a long time, tho I agree that John may have done something when the boys were much younger. And we all know how Sam feels about Halloween!
Re: Happy Birthday, dear Sam...
Date: 2007-05-07 05:47 pm (UTC)Yeah, boy, this has been a pretty rough year for Sam, hasn't it?

That's what I think as well. Before John was so obsessed with hunting that killing the vampire took precedence over his sons birthdays. :-(

Date: 2007-05-03 05:47 am (UTC)NOTHIN'. Just one lousy picture. *shakes head in disappointment*
I knew Sam wasn't your OMG ABSOLUTELY MOST FAVORITEST EVER but I still thought you could do better than this.
*shakes head again*

Date: 2007-05-03 12:47 pm (UTC)What about YOU, missy? The self-proclamed #1 fan of Sammy Winchester? I at least acknowledged his birthday, but YOU? Not a SINGLE post about YOUR undying love for Sam on his birthday for heaven's sake!
What do you post instead? First you use a DRAKE AND JOSH icon - not even one of Sammy! And then you post a link to a song upload.
Talk about shaking my head in disappointment.
I'm telling Jared you've thrown him over for TEENAGERS. See if he ever send you another love letter.

Date: 2007-05-08 05:09 am (UTC)SO I DO NOT NEED TO POST A SILLY ENTRY PROCLAIMING THE HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAY WISHES TO HIM.
Because seriously, Barb.
MY.
ENTIRE.
LIFE.

Date: 2007-05-08 01:11 pm (UTC)It's too late. I already told Jared, and the crushing look of disappointment on his face when he found out you posted a FLASHDANCE song instead of a birthday wish to him -- it wasn't pretty, alli. Not pretty at all. I had to comfort him. Here he thought you were Sam's biggest supporter and you threw him over for Irene Cara. [shakes head]
I think you need to post a Sam/Jared picspam to make up for it. Get you back in his good graces. Mmm-hmm, I think you do.

Date: 2007-05-09 02:31 am (UTC)And Sam happens to LOVE Flashdance so SHUT UP.
And of course you know if you're not going to be sending me anymore cards from Jared then I'M not going to be sending you anymore cards from Jensen so think about THAT while you're smokin' your cigar.

Date: 2007-05-03 08:49 am (UTC)As I said back on Dean's birthday, as far as John is concerned, I fluctuate between (1) thinking he didn't commemorate any birthdays/holidays with the boys and (2) thinking that that might have been the one piece of normality he preserved for his children, and I lean more toward option 2. Now I don't picture them hitting Chuckie Cheese's or anything like that, but there would be some sort of little celebration. I think John would know that's what Mary would have wanted. Say what you want about John and his parenting skills (and believe me, I have), he did love his sons, so I think he would at the very least remember their birthdays. Maybe the comic books will tell us. By the way, at cwtv, they have an announcement for SPN: Origins on the front page with a blurb that says there's going to be an on-air interview with Kripke during SPN tonight! Long live Kripke!
Dean? Again as I said before, Dean would always remember Sammy's birthday. I bet he made each one special in some way when they were growing up, with or without Dad. I just know it. He's not an awesome brother for nothing.
So Happy Birthday, Sam!

Date: 2007-05-07 06:04 pm (UTC)I agree. I can imagine him as a child, getting invited to a classmate's birthday party, at the kid's house, and Sam realizing that he'd never have anything like that. :-(
And I'm still thinking this party we see going on in tonight's episode is for Sam's birthday, so we will be able to see what a *normal* birthday would have been for him.
Well you were close! It was for a birthday! Just not Sam's. :-)
and (2) thinking that that might have been the one piece of normality he preserved for his children, and I lean more toward option 2
And I think he tried as well, when the kids were younger, but soon hunting overtook everything in John's life, and I think birthdays fell to the wayside in favor of getting rid of the poltergeist.
By the way, at cwtv, they have an announcement for SPN: Origins on the front page with a blurb that says there's going to be an on-air interview with Kripke during SPN tonight! Long live Kripke!
Yeah, what happened with that?? There was no interview during "What Is..."!
I just know it. He's not an awesome brother for nothing.
You bet he is! I can absolutely see Dean not letting a single b-day go by without doing something for Sam. He knew all his brother ever longed for was "normal" and Dean loves his brother, so why not give him a piece of normal one day every year?
