I'm sure Sam, when he was growing up, at the very least *wanted* to celebrate his birthday - it would have been the *normal* thing to do, and Sam wanted normal.

I agree. I can imagine him as a child, getting invited to a classmate's birthday party, at the kid's house, and Sam realizing that he'd never have anything like that. :-(

And I'm still thinking this party we see going on in tonight's episode is for Sam's birthday, so we will be able to see what a *normal* birthday would have been for him.

Well you were close! It was for a birthday! Just not Sam's. :-)

and (2) thinking that that might have been the one piece of normality he preserved for his children, and I lean more toward option 2

And I think he tried as well, when the kids were younger, but soon hunting overtook everything in John's life, and I think birthdays fell to the wayside in favor of getting rid of the poltergeist.

By the way, at cwtv, they have an announcement for SPN: Origins on the front page with a blurb that says there's going to be an on-air interview with Kripke during SPN tonight! Long live Kripke!

Yeah, what happened with that?? There was no interview during "What Is..."!

I just know it. He's not an awesome brother for nothing.

You bet he is! I can absolutely see Dean not letting a single b-day go by without doing something for Sam. He knew all his brother ever longed for was "normal" and Dean loves his brother, so why not give him a piece of normal one day every year?
