Supernatural ep 6x18 - official synopsis

Yes, folks, we're inching closer to the date of THAT EPISODE, when soon I will no longer need my cowboy manip Jensen/Dean in my icon because we're going to get THE REAL THING. Is it April 22nd yet???
Here from SpoilerTV is the official synopsis, along with my own comments...
“SUPERNATURAL” — (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET)
“Frontierland” (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)
SAM AND DEAN RETURN TO THE WILD, WILD WEST — While searching for a way to defeat Eve, Dean stumbles upon Samuel Colt’s (guest star Sam Hennings) journal in the Campbell library. Realizing Samuel might have the answer to their problems, Sam and Dean ask Castiel (Misha Collins) to send them back in time so they can meet the man himself. While Sam is a bit reluctant to time travel, Dean is beside himself with excitement to return to the Wild, Wild West. Guy Bee directed the episode written by Andrew Dabb & Daniel Loflin with story by Andrew Dabb, Daniel Loflin & Jackson Stewart (##617).
~~~~
Now while I'm still excited about this episode, I'm also a bit dismayed to see that it's Dabb and Loflin writing it. [sigh] I have a love/hate relationship with them. I hated every episode they wrote in season four, but I enjoyed several they wrote in season five. Please dear GOD don't let them screw this up. Though I guess I should be thankful that Sera Gamble didn't write it, because for SURE it would be a piece of crap.
Ok, raise your hand if you think Dean is going to turn out to be the hunter that Samuel Colt makes the gun for. Remember John telling Sam and Dean that Colt made it for a hunter? :-) I think that would turn out to be WICKED. And we've all seen the preview of Dean in that smoking hot duster getting ready for a showdown with the gun. Holy. Crap. :-)
Save a horse, ride a cowboy, baby!
Date: 2011-04-01 12:16 pm (UTC)They're uneven, for sure - but when they're good, they're really good and they write the best Dean. When they're not, they're iffy. Though they've never written anything as bad as ASS (and do those initials say it all or what?).
But I do believe they are the closest thing we have anymore to Deancentric writers, now that Edlund is all about Cas and making Sera happy by giving her lots of shirtless Jared for her personal dvd collection. Whatev. Since Edlund's interests changed, and Kim Manners is dead, I fear there is no producer on staff who champions "Dean" anymore. *sigh*
But I am looking forward to Frontierland - I figure it's probably the closest to a Dean episode that we're getting this year. Since it's the only episode Jensen has been high on except for WaB that he directed (also written by D&L), I'm going with his gut since he certainly has better taste and knows Dean better than Kramble. And I predict lots of icon-making. ;D
Date: 2011-04-01 05:50 pm (UTC)[snort] ASS. Brilliant. Yep that one's tied with Yellow Fever for the worst episodes ever written on SPN, period.
now that Edlund is all about Cas and making Sera happy by giving her lots of shirtless Jared for her personal dvd collection.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Could she make her obsession with Jared anymore obvious? I'm tired of her living out her fantasies now that she's in charge of the show.
Since Edlund's interests changed, and Kim Manners is dead, I fear there is no producer on staff who champions "Dean" anymore. *sigh*
Sure seems that way, doesn't it? :-(
But I am looking forward to Frontierland - I figure it's probably the closest to a Dean episode that we're getting this year.
HOPEFULLY. But after hearing Jared say how he gets 6 pages of dialogue with the Colt character it leads me to believe that Dean won't even get to interact with him and the spotlight will be on Sam. Again. Always.
Let's keep our fingers crossed that Jensen was excited because Dean finally gets to do something and not just because he got to dress up like a cowboy.
Date: 2011-04-01 06:31 pm (UTC)Oh, trust me, that part does NOT make me happy, and would seem to be par for the course for this season of "The Sam Winchester Show - with special guest-star, Dean 'Who?' Winchester". *grrrrrrrrrrrrr*
No, Gamble couldn't possibly make it more obvious that her predominant intention this season was to push Dean (and Jensen) out of the story and the limelight while trying to turn Sam into Dean (which begs the question of what even his most rabid supporters really think of the character of "Sam"). I gave her the benefit of the doubt before the season started playing out - I thought she'd be a professional. Instead, she went full-throttle "Becky the Vapid Fangirl" instead. Way to set back women in high-ranking entertainment positions by decades, Sera.
Still, I have to hang onto some shred of hope that there's more to Jensen's enthusiasm for this one episode than just the clothes. He's usually not that superficial, especially since as an actor he plays dress-up all the time anyway.
Also, since I firmly believe Dean is going to have even less of a presence and part to play in this year's finale than he did in "Suck Song", I just have a feeling the western may be a pacifier of sorts, an effort to make it up to Jensen a little for the screwing over he got this year - especially since for once he wasn't so quiet about it, which had to surprise the producers (not that it did him much good to complain, apparently).
Oh, I could go on for hours about Season Sux - but I'll spare you. ;) Fingers and toes crossed for the western. :D
Date: 2011-04-04 11:04 pm (UTC)I have to say I'm not surprised. I predicted this from the moment it was announced that Sera was taking over this season. People told me I shouldn't jump the gun before S6 even started, but hey, look who turned out to be right. I rest my case.
while trying to turn Sam into Dean (which begs the question of what even his most rabid supporters really think of the character of "Sam")
Wow, I didn't even think of that, of what Sera's even done to Sam's character. She's certainly made me despise him all over again for most of this season, and I'm not a die-hard Sam girl.
Still, I have to hang onto some shred of hope that there's more to Jensen's enthusiasm for this one episode than just the clothes. He's usually not that superficial, especially since as an actor he plays dress-up all the time anyway.
True, true. Here's hoping you're right and Jensen has more than two scenes before Sam takes over the entire episode.
Also, since I firmly believe Dean is going to have even less of a presence and part to play in this year's finale than he did in "Suck Song",
Well unfortunately that's a given, based on the spoilers saying the season finale will concentrate all on Sam. Gosh, what a surprise, Sera!
I just have a feeling the western may be a pacifier of sorts, an effort to make it up to Jensen a little for the screwing over he got this year
Nothing like throwing the dog a bone, eh? Sorry we treated you and Dean like crap this year, so here's a bright, shiny episode when Dean actually gets to DO something! Yay!
especially since for once he wasn't so quiet about it, which had to surprise the producers (not that it did him much good to complain, apparently).
I loved that he spoke up about his displeasure. Interesting that he never said a bad thing in all the years Eric was running the show, but as soon as Sera takes over he starts speaking up. Hmmm….coincidence? I think not. Yes, too bad it meant nothing in the end, but I applaud him for not taking it lying down.
Oh, I could go on for hours about Season Sux -
Ah, how I love that description. :-)
You can ride the horse, I'm riding a Winchester
Date: 2011-04-01 12:52 pm (UTC)Will there be references to that show with Robert Conrad?
And Yes Gaw-awlmighteh Jensen is smoking hot in that duster.
I will try to watch for the plot...I will fail, but I will try.
ps. when do new eps start again?
Re: You can ride the horse, I'm riding a Winchester
Date: 2011-04-01 05:46 pm (UTC)Great minds think alike! I want it to be true SO bad. It would finally make Dean important in the SPN mythology.
Will there be references to that show with Robert Conrad?
Ha! Only if one of the boys is wearing skin-tight pants. ;-)
And Yes Gaw-awlmighteh Jensen is smoking hot in that duster.
I can see why Jensen said he was keeping it for himself!
Hee! I think first viewing will just be for eye candy and a second viewing for the plot. :-)
ps. when do new eps start again?
April 15th!
Date: 2011-04-01 05:46 pm (UTC)I think a western episode has been on everyone's minds for years. I've certainly seen it wished for often enough!
I'm really hoping this will be the one that draws me back into the show. I also hope it's well worth the wait, after all this time. But I think as long as the boys ride horses, my criteria will be met, LOL!
If this episode bombs due to bad writing I'm going to be both pissed and heartbroken. Especially since we got screwed over with the body swap episode. Well, we saw Sam on horseback at least during the preview, so here's hoping Dean is as well!
I have no idea who the show writers are more, really, save for Edlund and Gamble, and I don't like either of their writing much anymore. As long as it's not them, I'll probably be okay with it.
If I never see another episode written by Sera it'll be too soon. And Edlund's writing is too erratic for me. Probably because my sense of humor and his varies wildly.
And, yeah, it would be really cool if Dean turned out to be hunter the gun was made for. Great story arc-wise, and it would fill a long overdue plot hole. :)
Exactly! And it would finally make Dean important in the SPN mythology.
Date: 2011-04-01 04:07 pm (UTC)I've actually been pretty good with Dabb and Loughlin since last season. TBH, ALL the writers have disappointed me in the last couple of seasons so I don't depend on any of them anymore to give me good Dean, I just count my lucky stars when they managed to do it. Let's hope its the Dabb and Loughlin of recently and not the Dabb and Loughlin of Season 4 who wrote this script. :)
(no subject)
Date: 2011-04-01 05:47 pm (UTC)Hmmm…well, this wouldn't be the first time the show messed up with dates/years (Sam in college only 2 years? Should've been 4? Oops! Oh well!). And if Dean's not the hunter the gun was originally made for, why would Colt have it when the boys go back in time? Did the original hunter give it back? Or die? Yes, I'm grasping at straws that Dean will finally be important in the SPN mythology.
Not to mention it sounds like Sam is the only one with scenes with Samuel Colt.
Which will piss me off BEYOND BELIEF. As soon as Jared said he had 6 pages of dialogue with the Colt character it was also my first thought that Dean's going to get the shaft. Will he be mucking out horse stalls while Sam gets the limelight? :-/
Let's hope its the Dabb and Loughlin of recently and not the Dabb and Loughlin of Season 4 who wrote this script. :)
Yes, please! Because if it turns into another After School Special or Yellow Fever….grrr….
Date: 2011-04-01 10:21 pm (UTC)I have seen all of one ep of season six (The French Connection) but it seems like there's a trend of angels being the justification for any plot.
"How do we get Sam and Dean to another universe?"
"Angels!"
"Time travel?"
"Angels can totally do that. They've done that, like, multiple times already!"
"... So how come angels don't just stop whatever big bad we're up to?"
"Because they're dicks!"
That's what I liked about season four - angels were all-powerful beings, but they just weren't interested in helping. And then in season five you have an angel who is interested, but he's isolated and losing more and more of his power the closer they get to the final showdown. Has season six lost that edge?
Also, poor Cas. He's been relegated to the status of DeLorean.
(no subject)
Date: 2011-04-04 11:02 pm (UTC)You do have a good point there. The angels seem to be convenient plot devices, don't they? But when you'd think they'd really be needed they're suddenly not around.
Season six has ZERO edge when it comes to the angels. All Cas does is pop up, say two words and he's gone again. There's supposed to be this huge war in Heaven going on, but we've seen none of it. I'm more interested in that than the crap plots Sera's been churning out for over half the season.
Also, poor Cas. He's been relegated to the status of DeLorean.
I feel sorry for Misha. The guy's had nothing to do all season.
Date: 2011-04-05 08:57 am (UTC)Boo. Oh well, I'll just have to rely on fandom to bandaid this injustice of canon. Though this does explain all the teasing he gets from Jensen about getting paid to not work.
(no subject)
Date: 2011-04-05 08:10 pm (UTC)LOL! Exactly! I'm sure Misha was glad to spend more time with his new baby but we've missed Cas. :-(
Yeehaw, I hope...
Date: 2011-04-03 04:54 am (UTC)Now, "Frontierland"? I have been so hoping for a Western ep (and a musical, but that's for another comment), and Dean being that long-ago hunter on horseback would be too delicious. I really hope it isn't going to be forty-five minutes of present-day and twenty Western, but I'm looking forward to it a whole lot more than most of this season, which hasn't been quite as bad as Season Three but it's on the edge.
Re: Yeehaw, I hope...
Date: 2011-04-04 10:59 pm (UTC)Well kudos to you for even trying to watch it. It sounded so dreadful I didn't even bother. Heck, I didn't watch about six-seven episodes in the first half of the season.
Now, "Frontierland"? I have been so hoping for a Western ep (and a musical, but that's for another comment),
Musical! Musical! What a riot that would be. :-) But Jensen would have to purposely sing bad, because Dean can't sing. Although, the two times we've heard Dean sing have been amusing. :-) I wanna see Cas belt out a tune!
and Dean being that long-ago hunter on horseback would be too delicious.
It would be the first time the series did a ret-con job RIGHT.
Oh, if they don't spend the majority of the time in the Old West I'm going to be very, very irritated. Then again, this is Sera in charge now, so I'm sure she'll find a way to destroy it.
