I came home from my Photoshop class last night to find out that someone in New York hacked into my Paypal account and stole everything I had, PLUS $300 from my checking account, that my Paypal account is linked to.

I'm so upset I want to throw up and burst into tears.

I leave on vacation in just a few days and I've just lost $600 that could've been used on my trip.

Paypal has launched an investigation, but it could take up to 30 days to get my money back.

It just SICKENS me that there are people out there who are too fucking lazy to get an actual job, so they steal from others.

I feel so violated now, and terrified that this could happen again, to any of my online accounts (credit cards, etc.)

I truly, truly just want to curl up in a corner and cry.

Oh shit. I am so sorry that this happened to you. I kinda know how that feels, something similar happened to my debit card a couple of years ago and I've lost about the same amount and never got it back. I hope they can get it back for you *huggles*

I'm just so stunned, you know? I've always been such a big advocate of doing business online, only to get burned by it. [sigh]

I've got my fingers crossed Paypal will come through for me.

I'm sorry this happened to you. How were they able to hack into your account? I hope the investigation finds who did it and so they can go go jail.

I've absolutely no idea how they did it and Paypal can only guess that they got my password somehow. But HOW is what I want to know. It's not like I go around giving it out!

I hope the investigation finds who did it and so they can go go jail.

They damn well better! This is theft! I'd like to know if I could actually sue them myself if and when Paypal discovers who they are.

It really is scary, because Paypal goes around touting how safe they are. Yeah, not so much! And yes, hopefully I'll get everything back from Paypal if/when they can recover the funds from the thief.

While it wasn't due to Paypal, PJ and I DID have this happen to us a few years ago when someone hacked our bank account (we discovered later it was to purchase computer parts from Japan, of all things). The chain reaction that followed was worse. As we try to keep track of every penny (when you live hand to mouth, you must), one minute we had enough in the account to cover incoming bills -- then the bills hit and there was nothing there, causing an overdraw fee, and the companies tried putting them through again (while it was still empty) which added ANOTHER overdraw charge... Our account had to be shut down pending an investigation, we had tons of businesses shaking their fists and charging us late fees, AND we had no money to buy groceries or cat food or litter or put gas in the car. We wound up having to close that account completely, reopen a new one and set up our automatic payments all over again. And while the bank forgave us the overdraws, we still got stuck with a lot of late fees. Talk about kickin' ya when you're down...

My heart goes out to you, hon, because I know how infuriating and frustrating this is. Hopefully, they'll catch whoever it was that did this. *HUGS*

Oh yikes, what a mess! And the same thing could've happened to me if they decided to steal a thousand or so dollars instead of the $600. I guess I should count myself lucky, huh? [sigh]

Paypal knows who did it, but recovering the funds from a thief is NOT going to be easy, I'd guess. God, what a mess!

Oh Barb I am so so sorry! That's horrible! How did you find out? Did PayPal contact you or were you just checking your account?

I'm so upset I want to throw up and burst into tears.

That is totally understandable!

Paypal has launched an investigation, but it could take up to 30 days to get my money back.
Will they be able to get the money taken from the checking account back as well or do you have to do a whole other thing with the bank?

It just SICKENS me that there are people out there who are too fucking lazy to get an actual job, so they steal from others.

Really! Especially this way! Use your computer skills to do something GOOD, you loser! I hope they're caught.

I feel so violated now, and terrified that this could happen again, to any of my online accounts (credit cards, etc.)

It's such a violation of trsust as well as everything else. These online institutions claim to be safe, and they're so widely used by so many people, that it lulls you into a false sense of security. At least I know it does me, and then something like this happens!

I truly, truly just want to curl up in a corner and cry.

Shedding tears does have the positive effect of cleansing certain chemicals from the body and the brain. Leaving you in far better shape to help me decide how to track this asswipe down and kill him tomorrow.

You know how I found out? I was balancing my checkbook and logged into my bank account, where I saw a Paypal instant transfer for $300. Well, I knew I didn't do that! So I tried logging into my Paypal account and it wouldn't let me! My account had been suspended for suspicious activity.

So that REALLY pissed me off. Paypal suspected something was going on, that there had been an unauthorized transaction on my account, but they NEVER CONTACTED ME. How's that for customer service? I had to discover it on my own. Thank god I did just randomly, one day after it happened. It could've been a month before I realized!

So then I had to call Paypal and get my account reinstated and start the investigation. I'm really furious with Paypal for not sending me an email about this.

Will they be able to get the money taken from the checking account back as well or do you have to do a whole other thing with the bank?

They said they'll get it all back for me (hopefully, eventually) and all $600 will end up in my Paypal account, where I'll have to transfer the $300 back into my bank account.

I hope they're caught.

Paypal told me they know who they are, so I've got my fingers crossed.

Yep, exactly. Especially Paypal, who always touts how secure they are. Not so much!

I can NOT believe that shit!!! How could they NOT contact you??! That is unreal! They cover their own ass by suspending your account but basically "Fuck you, you're on your own with the fact that we think someone is stealing from you, Valued Customer."

I'd look into lodging a Better Business Bureau complaint against them!

When it's over are you going to keep your PayPal account? I'm wondering if we should cancel ours. It would be a much easier decision for us though, because we hardly ever use it anyway.

Tell me about it. That's why when they sent me that online survey about the situation I really let them have it about that.

When it's over are you going to keep your PayPal account?

I'm seriously considering not keeping it. But I do so much stuff with ebay it could become a problem. I wish the two of those businesses weren't so linked together.
