I came home from my Photoshop class last night to find out that someone in New York hacked into my Paypal account and stole everything I had, PLUS $300 from my checking account, that my Paypal account is linked to.
I'm so upset I want to throw up and burst into tears.
I leave on vacation in just a few days and I've just lost $600 that could've been used on my trip.
Paypal has launched an investigation, but it could take up to 30 days to get my money back.
It just SICKENS me that there are people out there who are too fucking lazy to get an actual job, so they steal from others.
I feel so violated now, and terrified that this could happen again, to any of my online accounts (credit cards, etc.)
I truly, truly just want to curl up in a corner and cry.

If the stress beforehand doesn't kill me first. :-)

They damn well better! This is theft! I'd like to know if I could actually sue them myself if and when Paypal discovers who they are.

Date: 2008-07-31 11:57 am (UTC)Paypal knows who did it, but recovering the funds from a thief is NOT going to be easy, I'd guess. God, what a mess!

Date: 2008-07-31 12:56 am (UTC)Do you know how the person managed to hack into your account? Is there a way they can track it back to the source?
Good luck, and I hope you get your money back. Now I want to go change the account numbers on all my accounts, just in case.

Date: 2008-07-31 12:07 pm (UTC)And I feel like a complete ass, because I'm always going around saying how great it is to do business online and then I get hacked. [sigh]
I hope they get this figured out for you quick, honey.
God, me, too. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Date: 2008-07-31 12:08 pm (UTC)I've got the rope. I know they're in New York. Let's go find them and make them rue the day they dared steal from me. Asshole lowlife bastards.

That is totally understandable!
Paypal has launched an investigation, but it could take up to 30 days to get my money back.
Will they be able to get the money taken from the checking account back as well or do you have to do a whole other thing with the bank?
It just SICKENS me that there are people out there who are too fucking lazy to get an actual job, so they steal from others.
Really! Especially this way! Use your computer skills to do something GOOD, you loser! I hope they're caught.
I feel so violated now, and terrified that this could happen again, to any of my online accounts (credit cards, etc.)
It's such a violation of trsust as well as everything else. These online institutions claim to be safe, and they're so widely used by so many people, that it lulls you into a false sense of security. At least I know it does me, and then something like this happens!
I truly, truly just want to curl up in a corner and cry.
Shedding tears does have the positive effect of cleansing certain chemicals from the body and the brain. Leaving you in far better shape to help me decide how to track this asswipe down and kill him tomorrow.

Date: 2008-07-31 12:14 pm (UTC)So that REALLY pissed me off. Paypal suspected something was going on, that there had been an unauthorized transaction on my account, but they NEVER CONTACTED ME. How's that for customer service? I had to discover it on my own. Thank god I did just randomly, one day after it happened. It could've been a month before I realized!
So then I had to call Paypal and get my account reinstated and start the investigation. I'm really furious with Paypal for not sending me an email about this.
Will they be able to get the money taken from the checking account back as well or do you have to do a whole other thing with the bank?
They said they'll get it all back for me (hopefully, eventually) and all $600 will end up in my Paypal account, where I'll have to transfer the $300 back into my bank account.
I hope they're caught.
Paypal told me they know who they are, so I've got my fingers crossed.

Yep, exactly. Especially Paypal, who always touts how secure they are. Not so much!
Leaving you in far better shape to help me decide how to track this asswipe down and kill him tomorrow.
LOL! Oh god, honey, thank you for the laugh. I certainly needed it. :-)

I can NOT believe that shit!!! How could they NOT contact you??! That is unreal! They cover their own ass by suspending your account but basically "Fuck you, you're on your own with the fact that we think someone is stealing from you, Valued Customer."
I'd look into lodging a Better Business Bureau complaint against them!
When it's over are you going to keep your PayPal account? I'm wondering if we should cancel ours. It would be a much easier decision for us though, because we hardly ever use it anyway.

Date: 2008-08-01 05:07 pm (UTC)Tell me about it. That's why when they sent me that online survey about the situation I really let them have it about that.
When it's over are you going to keep your PayPal account?
I'm seriously considering not keeping it. But I do so much stuff with ebay it could become a problem. I wish the two of those businesses weren't so linked together.

They told me they know who they are, which is a step in the right direction. But trying recover funds from a thief can't be easy, you know? And if they won't prosecute them, I sure as hell will!
Thanks for the hugs, I certainly needed them. :-)

Try to enjoy your vacation--why does it never fail that something like this happens just before you have no time to deal with it??
Exactly! I'm consumed with this mess instead of concentrating on packing, etc. God, what a mess!
