Eastern Media Con wrap-up post
Oct. 9th, 2008 11:28 amI finally have a minute to write up my last post about the wonderful Eastern Media Con that I attended this past weekend out in New Jersey.
So Saturday was busy, busy, busy. Breakfast was filled with games (where myself and
charityflint teamed up with
sithdragn and her "posse") that saw my table walking away with even more little rubber duckies as prizes. By the time the con ended, Charity and I had an entire flock of those critters to take home. :-)
After breakfast it was my turn to host a panel. A workshop, actually, on Photoshop for Beginners. The room was packed and I had to go get another table and more chairs! I was nervous as hell, but I paced myself well and got through all of the lessons I wanted to teach. Many folks came up to me afterwards to thank me, so that made me feel great. :-)
It was off to the con suite after my workshop for lunch. Kudos to the con comm for providing us with pizza every day, along with drinks and snacks, both sweet and healthy. Combined with the breakfast buffet, we only had to pay for one meal, dinner, each day.
Lady Ra hosted a Supernatural panel called "What If?" that had us speculating on all sorts of things and how the show could've gone in a different direction had certain things happened a different way. We were a pretty talkative group and I really enjoyed myself.
Charity and I went to a writer's workshop hosted by C.W. Walker afterwards. Wow, what a delightful woman who really knows her stuff. I left with a better understanding of how to pace my stories and where certain plot points should fall.
I should mention here that EMC has three tracks of panels running at the same time, plus "do it yourself" panels AND episode screenings and discussions. All of that, combined with the dealer's room and the art show means that if you can't find something to do, something's wrong! LOL!
After a quick dinner, Charity and I got our crazy hats ready for the big party on Saturday night. Oh man, what a BLAST! You should've seen all the goofy hats people were wearing. :-)
The party was AWESOME. There was a hysterical skit put on by Kath and Sonja, a take off on Star Wars that had us all laughing. The highlight was the interactive game, "a fannish night at the races". Oh good lord did everyone like that! You placed your bet on a fannish "horse", like Dean Winchester, Captain Kirk, Starbuck and Jim Ellison, just to name a few. Then audience members were chosen to be the "jockeys" and I got picked to "ride" Dean Winchester. LOL! Woot! We had party hats on our heads with the characters faces on them, and then based on the roll of the dice, you got to move ahead a certain amount of squares, which were taped to the floor. Everyone was yelling and cheering their horse and rider on, but unfortunately for me, Dean was a dud. I believe we came in dead last. :-) But in the second race I bet on The Sentinel himself, Jim Ellison and I won! That game was such a riot. *g*
We had two raffles then, one for the 50/50 and one for a Barnes and Noble gift card. I didn't win either, but Charity almost had a heart attack, as the 50/50 number was just one off from her ticket. That lucky lady walked away with nearly $500.00!
Then it was time for the awards, and boy there were a lot of them, which was great. I ended up walking away with:
BEST DRAMATIC SONGVID: Never Say Die - Supernatural
BEST SUPERNATURALLY AWESOME HAT - for my crazy hat
BEST SUPER FAN FOR ALL AROUND ASSISTANCE - for myself and Charity pitching in to do all sorts of volunteer work
EMC APPRECIATION AWARD - for putting on my Photoshop workshop
I was so thrilled with everything, especially the hat award, since I worked so hard on it, and I was totally surprised with the songvid one.
The art show auction was next, and I'm SO thrilled that I won a piece by Montana, a photomanip of Jensen and Jared called "Headlock". It's so adorable!
Then the artistic talents of myself, Lorraine Brevig and Tyger Tiger were auctioned off, and I'll be doing a photomanip of Vin and Ezra for my lucky winner. :-)
After the party, Charity and I headed over to the bar for a couple of drinks before sitting down and relaxing with our con comm friends, Glow, Kath, Sonja and Kelly, before finally calling it a night somewhere around 1 am. What an awesome day!
Sunday was filled with goodbyes for folks that were leaving, but Charity and I were staying until Monday, so we went to a Wincest panel (woot!) that I really enjoyed. I love hearing everyone's different takes on brother/brother relationships.
Charity and I enjoyed a delicious lunch of Chinese food with
sithdragn and her friend before all of us headed off to the Dead Dog panel. Afterwards we all helped pitch in to clean up the ballroom, then had dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Charity and I again met up with Sith and her friends for a relaxing night in the hotel pool and hot tub. Ahhh....
But then it was time to say our goodbyes as well, as Charity and I were off to the airport bright and early Monday morning.
All in all, a fantastic trip and a wonderful, fun filled convention. I encourage all of you to go next year. The con comm would like to get about 200 people attending and this year we were at about 125. I like these smaller conventions, because it feels more intimate and everyone gets to know everyone else and you end up making all sorts of new friends (waves hello to
morganslady).
Ok, I'm done rambling now. :-) Hopefully I've convinced some of you to give EMC a try next year!
