Star Wars = Photoshop. Who knew!

Spent all day at an Advanced Photoshop conference, which was OUTSTANDING. I've seriously never taken a better class in the last 10 years.
Why is that, you ask? Because my instructor was one of the original group of people who created Photoshop. And did you know it came about because of George Lucas? Yep, Photoshop got its start because of Star Wars and Industrial Light and Magic. Lucas heard about the software this group was working on and it sounded like just what he needed to help clean up the special effects on Star Wars. Next thing Will (my instructor) knows, HE'S WORKING ON STAR WARS. I nearly flipped out when I heard this. Star Wars has been a big part of my life since I was six years old.
Will told us stories about how tedious it was to work, frame by frame, on cleaning up the film and how massive the computer file sizes were back then. It was fascinating! The Photoshop software continued to be refined as they worked on the movie, thanks in part to Lucas and ILM and apparently their financial backing.
I had never heard this story before. Who knew that a movie I loved helped spawn a software program I love and use everyday. :-)

Date: 2012-03-23 12:54 am (UTC)The conference was off-site in a city about a half hour from where I live. It was nice to get away from the office. :-) And YES, oh my gosh, I learned SO much.
George Lucas really? WOW
I know! I’m blown away by the connection to Star Wars and then to be taught by the guy who worked on the film - unbelievable!

My instructor worked on cleaning up the special effects, removing the matt lines around the spaceships, etc.
