One of the things I did over the weekend was pick up the first issue of the new Supernatural comic book Caledonia. I don't know why I bothered because I knew I was going to dislike it, and yep, sure did.

Now the cover art is great, but the interior art is HORRENDOUS. Here, check it out:

With all of the talented comic book artists out there, WHY does SPN consistently, with every single series, get the absolute worst? I really hope Jensen and Jared never see ANY of these comics and how the artists have drawn them.

Then there's the storyline, which finds Sam taking part in a student travel program where he heads to Edinburgh, Scotland. He's supposed to be attending lectures at the University but instead he heads to the library to research local monsters and mythology. He immediately meets this girl, Emma (who just so happens to be a hunter), who gets him drunk and takes him to see some ghosts that appear once a year.

Now I'm trying to figure out exactly when this takes place during Sam's time at Stanford and how it fits in with him dating Jessica, because in this comic he's got the hots for this hunter chick and makes out with her. So please tell me he's not cheating on Jess. But with as little care as the previous comic series have shown toward canon, they probably don't even know Sam was dating someone.

Since it's obvious that Dean will NOT be putting in an appearance in this comic (as he would never have gotten on a plane and apparently never had contact with Sam during this time period) I have no interest in reading another issue of this.

And what do you want to bet that DEAN will never get his own comic series, even though he had plenty of adventures while Sam was off at college.

Yeah, it really is. I just don’t understand why a Supernatural comic book series wouldn’t have both Sam and Dean. What’s the point?

It's not Supernatural unless they're both there.

Thanks for reviewing, I always trust your opinion. I read the last novel you recc'd and really enjoyed it. So far you haven't steered me wrong so I'll leave this on the shelf.

You’re very welcome! I’m quite glad to hear that you liked Night Terror. It was nice to finally give a good review on something SPN related. I should’ve known that wouldn’t last. :-)

I would never read a comic book of any kind but still i find it weird that anyone would ever have anything with Sam but no Dean or Dean with no Sam the two of them come as a package deal no matter what as far as i am considered

Ah, you should try a comic or two! They’re not all horrible. :-) But yes, I found it so incredibly odd that a Supernatural comic book series wouldn’t have both Sam and Dean. What’s the point?

The art isn't great, but it's sure not the worst out there in the professional comics industry. Rob Liefeld (http://www.progressiveboink.com/b/images/rob/liefeldgirl1.gif) is still my measure for the worst 'art' in comics, though there are a few people who are challenging him for that title.

As for Jess, is there any official time line of his relationship with her? The idea of him cheating on her doesn't sit well with me either, just because it really weakens how important she was to him, which then recasts his anger at her death as, I don't know, more self-centered? He would be angry that someone died under his watch rather than being angry that Jess died.

I wish Duss could do the interiors as well as the covers. His art is so pretty and moody.

Ooh I don’t think I’m familiar with Liefeld. It’s worth checking out just to see how bad he is. :-)

I can’t quite figure out, from the show, exactly how long Sam was dating Jess. Was it just that last year he was there? I was always under the impression it was longer, especially because we know that he had picked out a ring. I just really hope the comics aren’t imply that he cheated on her because I just can’t believe Sam would do that.

I really like Duss’s covers, too. It usually turns out that I love the covers and then dislike the interiors on so many comics that I read.

See, I don't think picking out a ring necessarily indicates any length of time, just how serious someone is about the relationship having a future. I've been with my partner for five years and neither of us want to get married, while one friend was engaged within a year of meeting her partner. Another friend has been engaged for five years but has no interest in setting a date because she's happy where she is. Engagements and marriage seem to be a big case of YMMV.

Has Sam had any other steady girlfriend? He doesn't strike me as the type to cheat at all, but since the only long-term relationship we've seen him in was with Ruby... Idk. I don't even see Sam as a one-night-stand person, but he keeps proving me wrong on that score.

The covers are beautiful. I wish I could get some of them as prints.

And on the DEAN side of things... you're right. How come Sam has so many comic arcs? I'd love to see a comic of the job he did where he met Cassie. I'd love to see his first solo hunt. I'd love to see what life was like with John after Sam left. Curse you, comics!

I know! There is SO much Dean-only material that they could mine from to do a series. It will be interesting to see if they DO do one after this Sam-centric one. But I’m not holding my breath.

Do the comics have a stable writer, or is it a new one for each arc? might write them an e-mail...

It’s a new writer and artist for each series.

Lol, I wonder if the writers get asked in the interviews if they're a Sam or a Dean person :p

the plot sounds good. I don't see nothing bad about it. Just, as you said at the end where is jessica? when it happened? So maybe they don't care about canon, just care about write about something of the show and that's it, maybe just write something different about one character of a tv show, but nothing related to this one

Right now the plot is just boring and I’ll never know if it gets any better, because without Dean in the story as well I’m not interested. And yeah, with the previous comic book series they’ve proven they could care less about canon so I’m sure it’s the same here. Which makes no sense. Why write a story based on an established show if you have no intention of adhearing to it?

I'm not a fan of comics in general, but that just sounds bad and not like Supernatural at all. I mean, no Dean!? And it doesn't even sound like it could be canon. Sam would probably mention at some point that he's been to Europe before 6x04.

I was thinking the exact same thing about Sam never saying he’d been to Europe. Yet another reason this comic series annoyed me!
