So while my buddy [livejournal.com profile] charityflint and I were standing at Dirk Benedict's table at Cyphan 2, Richard Hatch arrived and began setting up for the day. He looked over at the two of us and smiled and greeted us like we were old friends. "Hi! How're you doing? Nice to see you!"

And truly, that's what it was like all day long, with ALL of the actors. Oh, and as an aside, none of the BSG guys had "handlers". They were just there, by themselves. None of this Creation con crap where you're practically strip-searched before being allowed to approach the actors.

So we finished up with Dirk and went over to Richard's table, where two other people were standing. You know how you can just get a feeling about people? It was quite obvious that this man and woman were just going to stand there and camp out all day at Richard's table. As an actor, I'd find that highly annoying.

While we were waiting our turn we got to listen to a conversation that Richard and Dirk were having about "working" cruises they'd been on and how badly some of them had gone. Turns out that Dirk has had several stalkers (causing him to have to move from his home at one point) and some of these wackos were on these cruises. It got so bad one time that this one woman was thrown off the boat at one of the ports they docked at! Richard had similar stories, too. See, that's why being trapped on a boat with fans is NOT a good idea.

The people in front of us finally stepped to the side (but didn't leave Richard's table) and it was finally our turn and I nearly lost the ability to speak once again now that I was face to face with Captain Apollo. :-)

He was just as amazing as Dirk had been. So open and friendly and really appreciative of his fans. Just a down to earth guy who loves to chat with folks. I gave him my BSG Storybook and he also remarked on the good condition of it and then started flipping through the book. He stopped at a group photo and pointed to Laurette Spang (who played Casseopia) and remarked what a wonderful gal she was. Then he pointed at Jane Seymour and said, "Her - not so much." That prompted Dirk to come over and wow, the two of them did not like Jane! Said she was very difficult to work with (why am I not surprised?). I bet they were all glad when her character got killed off! LOL! They also mentioned Maren Jensen (who played Athena) and had nothing but wonderful things to say about her.

Richard signed autographs for the both of us, then I asked if we could get our picture with him. He jumped up with a smile and motioned for Charity to come back behind his table so that they could stand in front of his sign on the wall. He, just like Jason Carter, proceeded to act like a total goofball, putting his hand up in front of Charity's face every time I tried to take a photo until they were both laughing. :-)

Then it was my turn and OMG, I WAS MANHANDLED BY RICHARD HATCH! Seriously! He grabbed me up in the biggest hug and was like, shaking us back and forth, both of us laughing. Trust me when I say I had NO problem having my face pressed into Apollo's neck/shoulder, with my arms wrapped around him! LOL! I'm so glad that Charity managed to snap a photo while all this was going on. :-) As if that wasn't awesome enough, after I'd gotten a great photo with him HE RUFFLED MY HAIR! TWICE! At that moment I'd never felt more like that 8 year-old kid. It was just so sweet of him and I nearly melted, being treated in such a fun-loving way from this big-name actor.

He thanked us again before we left his table and after three amazing encounters right in a row I was walking on Cloud 9. :-)

Charity and I talked afterwards about how fortunate we were to have been treated so well by Jason, Dirk and Richard and we decided that it must be because we come off as so…non-threatening. Dirk in particular has had his fair share of crazies and he even told me that he was once accused of harassment because he gave a fan a hug. Yet he had no problem pulling me right to him for our photo. I think that says a lot.

Later in the day we attended the Battlestar Galactica Q&A panel and even though I didn't get to ask a question (and thought they talked waaaay too much about the new BSG) I really enjoyed it. All of the guys were really funny and it was just a delight to see them all interacting with one another. I was able to record the entire panel, too. (another thing Cyphan has going over Creation - take as many photos and video as you want!)

I also got to meet Herb Jefferson, Jr. who played Boomer, and I'll have that report and photos tomorrow!

Wow, what a fantastic experience! Where was this con?

Do you think that some of that accessibility is because BSG has been off the air for what, 30 years? Not to say Creation does it fairly, but can you picture the chaos if Jared and Jensen tried to be so casual?

Maybe in 30 years they will be able to just sit around and have lengthy conversation with the fans that come to see them...I'll go then!

Wow, what a fantastic experience! Where was this con?

It was held in Rosemont, IL about a half hour from where I live.

Do you think that some of that accessibility is because BSG has been off the air for what, 30 years?

I do believe that, especially for Dirk and Herb, but Richard was on the new BSG series just a year or so ago, so I was kind of surprised he didn’t have a handler or that his autographs and photos were handled differently. Not that I’m complaining how it turned out!

Maybe in 30 years they will be able to just sit around and have lengthy conversation with the fans that come to see them...I'll go then!

I don’t even want to think how old I’ll be in 30 years! LOL! So maybe...10 years instead. :-) I truly hope that then I can have this kind of experience with Jensen and Jared. I’d love to just talk to them instead of only having three seconds to smile and get an autograph.

Great story!! Being stalked by crazies is why JandJ have handlers, you've seen some of their fans. Maybe in 10 years after SPN is off the air we'll be able to meet them like you met the BSG guys.

I'm so enjoying your tales of meeting two of MY childhood idols as well. If only Laurette was there, you could complete the trifecta for me!

I was always, always a Starbuck girl. Starbuck and Casseiopeia, specifically. They were one of the first tv couples I told my own stories about.

But I liked Apollo too. And it's so wonderful to hear that both of them have lived up to your expectations.

Did you have the bubble gum cards? Man, I spent ALL my pocket money on those and kept them in a stack on my dresser. And I would obsessively sort through them to keep track of the ones I didn't have. Wish I would have kept them, now. But of course, when you think you've "outgrown" stuff, out it goes. Cause you don't realize that when you're forty, you'll be thinking "damn, wish I still had that".

Sounds like you guys really had a great time. I'm really happy that you had such a good experience!

Hey hon!

I'm so enjoying your tales of meeting two of MY childhood idols as well. If only Laurette was there, you could complete the trifecta for me!

You know, Dirk told me that Laurette does go to conventions with them, but she wasn’t available this past weekend. Bummer! Now that would’ve been cool.

I was always, always a Starbuck girl. Starbuck and Casseiopeia, specifically. They were one of the first tv couples I told my own stories about.

Awww! That’s great! I kept going back and forth between wanting Starbuck to be with Casseiopeia and Athena. One of best eps was when he had a date with both of them at the same time and kept running from room to room. :-)

But I liked Apollo too. And it's so wonderful to hear that both of them have lived up to your expectations.

Starbuck was always #1 for me, but Apollo was cool, too, and Richard was a delight to meet as well. I couldn’t have asked for a better hug!

Did you have the bubble gum cards? Man, I spent ALL my pocket money on those and kept them in a stack on my dresser.

I never did collect the BSG cards. I was saving all my allowance money to buy the Star Wars trading cars at the time. :-)

Wish I would have kept them, now. But of course, when you think you've "outgrown" stuff, out it goes. Cause you don't realize that when you're forty, you'll be thinking "damn, wish I still had that".

Oh, I know. While I saved a lot of stuff from SW and BSG, there are still things that I didn’t keep and now I’m kicking myself.

Sounds like you guys really had a great time. I'm really happy that you had such a good experience!

BEST. WEEKEND. EVER. :-)

Thanks so much for sharing. Richard is still pretty handsome. I wonder if this is the kind of encounter you'll be having with J2 in 20 years?

Glad you liked my little report! Richard really does still look good. :-) I’ve got my fingers crossed that I’ll have this kind of experience with Jensen someday!

Awwww Apollo - my very first on-screen hero !!!
Geez he's still looking good and you, my dear, I can totally imagine that you've been walking on cloud 9 the whole day ;o)
Well that day sure couldn't have gotten any better after your encounters with Starbuck and Apollo (you're such a lucky girl!)
Looking forward to see Boomer as well ...

It must be great to be able to chat with the actors like that and maybe in 10,20,30 ... years we'll be able to have the same experience with Jensen and Jared?
But wait, by then I would be ... oh forget about it - LOL!

Hee! I love your icon!

Richard really does still look great. I wish you could’ve met him, too! He was so amazing. :-)

I swear that was the best weekend in a long, long time. Chris and I are still talking about it!

Hmm...let’s not think how old we’ll be in 30 years, shall we? LOL! Let’s hope we can meet the boys in 10 years instead, how ‘bout that? And if it turns out like this con did, I’ll be on Cloud 9 all over again!

Richard drooled all over my 25 (very attractive) niece three years ago at SDCC. I was extremely jealous since I was an Apollo fan first! Lucky you got a hug - I got to hold my niece's purse. :)

OMG, that's awesome! I loved BSG back in the day and I had such a freaking crush on Apollo. And remember Rick Springfield was his brother for about two seconds? I had such a crush on him too. I still have some of my BSG stuff from where I was in the fan club. LOL Awesome pics. Thanks for sharing this!

Hee! Thanks! It was an incredible weekend. And it’s always good to find out that your childhood crushes are wonderful in person and not jerks, you know?

There was a BSG fan club? No way! Darn, missed out on that.

Rick Springfield! LOL! Yes, he was Zach for about 2 seconds in the pilot. I’d forgotten all about him!
