From IFMagazine.com comes this tidbit:
Breaking TCA 2010 News: THE CW WANTS MORE 'SUPERNATURAL' AFTER SEASON SIX (IF ALL GOES WELL)
LOCATION: The CW
THE SKINNY: With SUPERNATURAL going into its sxith season after increasing in ratings last season, The CW Entertainment President Dawn Ostroff says she would love to have more SUPERNATURAL in the years to come.
“I would hope so,” says Ostroff. “We are all feeling enthusiast about SUPERNATURAL. It was the best creative season last year. Everyone on the show feels there’s more juice in the characters. We hope it goes on for more seasons as well.”

Since we haven't even seen season six yet (and from all I've read I'm not impressed) I'm withholding an opinion on whether or not it should continue past next season.
What I really wanted to comment on was the statement that SPN increased in ratings last season. Umm, really? Increased in ratings from what? Season four to five? Not according to my numbers:
Season 4 (from highest to lowest)
1.) Lazarus Rising - 3.96 million (pre-empted in Chicago)
2.) After School Special - 3.57 million
3.) It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester - 3.55 million
4.) In the Beginning - 3.51 million
5.) (tie) Sex and Violence - 3.37 million
5.) (tie) On the Head of a Pin - 3.37 million
6.) Heaven and Hell - 3.34 (pre-empted in Pittsburgh)
7.) The Monster at the end of this Book - 3.28 million
8.) Yellow Fever - 3.25 million
9.) Wishful Thinking - 3.24 million (pre-empted in Denver)
10.) Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester - 3.18 million
11.) Metamorphosis - 3.14 million
12.) It's a Terrible Life - 3.13 million
13.) (tie) Monster Movie - 3.06 million
13.) (tie) Criss Angel is a Douche Bag - 3.06 million
14.) Family Remains - 2.98 million
15.) The Rapture - 2.95 million
16.) I Know What You Did Last Summer: 2.94 million (pre-empted in NYC)
17.) Lucifer Rising - 2.88 million
18.) Death Takes a Holiday - 2.83 million (pre-empted in various markets)
19.) When the Levee Breaks - 2.79 million
20.) Jump the Shark - 2.70 million
Season 5 (from highest to lowest)
1. Sympathy for the Devil - 3.39 million
2. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - 2.95 million
3. The Curious Case of Dean Winchester - 2.92 million
4. Sam, Interrupted - 2.85 million
5. Swan Song - 2.84 million
6. Hammer of the Gods - 2.82 million
7. Good God, Y'all - 2.78 million
8. 99 Problems - 2.77 million
9. Swap Meat - 2.70 million
10. The Real Ghostbusters - 2.68 million (pre-empted in San Francisco)
11. Free To Be You and Me - 2.66 million
12. Changing Channels - 2.65 million
13. The End - 2.59 million
14. I Believe the Children Are Our Future - 2.58 million
15. Two Minutes to Midnight - 2.53 million (pre-empted in Chicago)
16. Abandon All Hope - 2.51 million (pre-empted in Miami)
17. My Bloody Valentine - 2.51 million
18. Fallen Idols - 2.47 million
19. Point of No Return - 2.44 million
20. Dark Side of the Moon - 2.39 million
21. The Devil You Know - 2.38 million
22. The Song Remains the Same - 2.28 million (pre-empted in various markets)
Average rating for season four was 3.18 million. Average for season five was 2.55. That's certainly not an increase, so I'm wondering what they meant or if someone just didn't do their homework.

Date: 2010-07-30 01:15 am (UTC)I'm with you on the quality. If the show's still good then yeah, keep it on the air. But please don't let it hang around and mold like Smallville.

LOL! She wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole!

Date: 2010-07-30 01:05 am (UTC)Jensen did call it correctly in pointing out that since Smallville is going off the air after this coming season (10th season!), they'd want to keep Supernatural for at least another season as one of their strong long-airing staples.
Of course, contract renegotiations still have to happen. So nothing is cast in stone.
As to whether the show should continue ... jury is obviously still out. Way out right now. Like you, I'm not particularly thrilled with a lot of what I heard from CC. I liked a couple things, but spent two days earlier this week being out and out pissed. I'm seriously approaching the new season with caution, much as I want more Jensen on my TV screen.

Date: 2010-07-30 01:30 am (UTC)You would be correct! Season three averaged 2.91 million.
Maybe they're talking female demographic
Good point - it could be a particular demo that they were referring to, but geez, how difficult would it have been to type "after increasing in women 18-49 last season"?

I agree, but like you said, the ratings are going to have to support it AND those contract re-negotiations.

Oh man, don't even get me started! It's gotten so that right now I'm not even reading anything more having to do with S6 or I'll probably burst a blood vessel. And here people said months ago I shouldn't judge Sera before the season started. Oh, really? Things are going exactly as I thought they would.

otherwise I will have to deal with salt packets again.
ROTFL! I say we send them to her just for the hell of it. ;-)

Date: 2010-07-30 05:27 pm (UTC)I'm a huge spoilerphobe, and one of the benefits is that I don't have any pre-conceived opinions because I have nothing to base them on. I go into it with a completely open mind, see how it plays out, and then decide how I liked it. And I usually like it a lot.
I became a huge spoilerphobe because in the past when I was spoiled it would almost always be something that didn't look so good on paper, or it wasn't where I personally wanted the show to go, or a lot of other people thought it would suck, but it ended up being really well done--and I would've liked it more had it not been tainted by my or other people's negative expectations. I've enjoyed the show A LOT MORE since I stopped reading the forums.
I hope you end up liking S6 inspite of your doubts. And I wouldn't worry too much about Sera now being the showrunner: all the same writers and executive producers, including Kripke, have the same creative input. All that has changed is that Sera has taken over the duties as showrunner, which just means she'll be doing the managerial stuff like liasing with the network, watching the budget, doing the PR, etc.

Date: 2010-07-31 01:19 am (UTC)I've got my fingers crossed that what I've read about S6 sounds a LOT worse than it's actually going to be. Because I don't want to hate next season, I really, really don't.

Date: 2010-08-02 06:52 pm (UTC)Then I read an articule of: TVbytheNumbers.com.
I don't know if you already read it
was about Supernatural and Smallville beating Americn Idol in raitings and they were talking about DVR + 7 and LIVE +SD (I don't know if this count or not cause the people that watch the tv programms on the DVD I suppose they skip the commercials, isn't?)
maybe this is what they are talking about or maybe not...

Date: 2010-08-03 01:55 am (UTC)SPN always does well when the DVR numbers are figured in because so many people record it because it was up against Grey's and CSI, etc. So we look great in those ratings, but as you mentioned, they don't count because people fast forward through the commercials so advertisers don't care about the DVR numbers. Or iTunes, either.
I think what the article I posted referred to was that SPN increased in a certain demo (like women 18-49) from season four to five. But it would've been nice if they just stated it like that!
