EPIC FAIL on Warner Brothers part - included with the DVD set of Under the Red Hood that I posted about earlier today (complete with mini Red Hood action figure) was a coupon for a free digital download of the movie.

Awesome! So I sit down tonight, put in the website address and expect to be taken to the page to put in my authorization code. But guess what pops up instead?

MOVIE DOWNLOAD NOT AVAILABLE TO MACINTOSH COMPUTERS

To say I'm pissed is an understatement. Their fine print states that they don't want this to be able to be played via iTunes, on iPods or iPads.

WHAT. THE. FUCK?

Since when and WHY does Warner Brothers hate Apple so much? And that's pretty shitty for those of us who thought we'd be getting this as part of the DVD set.

Thankfully I also have a Windows computer at home and I'll download it from there and convert it into any format I want. But I know not everyone will be able to do this, so heads up if you've got a Mac - you won't be able to get the digital copy.

SUCK IT, WARNER BROTHERS!

Late comment is late, but, I do have an answer for you!

Here's the thing, back when HD-DVD and Blu-Ray were competing to see which would win the format war (similar to VHS vs Betamax), the movie studios were more so invested in HD-DVD than Blu-Ray. This was back in late 2007 early 2008.

In January 2008, Warner Bros dropped HD-DVD like a hot potato, Universal was still supporting it but no longer exclusively, and Paramount was looking to drop it too because they had a clause in their contract with Microsoft+Intel which stated that if Warner Bros dropped HD-DVD they could drop it too. Sidenote - this makes it funny to me that you can only download it on Windows computers since they were backing/made HD-DVD XD .

Anyway, basically all the movie studios fulfilled what was left of their contracts for HD-DVD (which was a couple of months) and went Blu-Ray only, so they are INCREDIBLY invested in the technology, which is also why Blu-Ray is so highly priced.

Apple has been anti-Blu-Ray for years because of Apple TV and the iTunes store. So that's probably why they don't want people to be able to download it on a Mac. I think it violates anti-trust measures, but I feel that way about the entire media industry including Apple and others.

There's probably a lot of support out there to make this sort of thing illegal. I may start a facebook page for it :D Anyway, here's some links to where I got my info (one is from a youtube video description, just so you know):

Wow, thank you SO much for all of the information and all of the links. I really appreciate it. I had no idea about the HD-DVD stuff. I did know about Apple being anti-Blu Ray, which really annoys me. Why can't everyone play nice together?? Argh! Guess for now I'll have to just watch Red Hood on my DVD player. [sigh]

You're welcome! It's semi-important stuff for me to know since I want to be a producer.

Why can't everyone play nice together?? Because everyone wants the market to themselves :D Corporations are greedy!
