From Zap2It.com comes an article chock full of Supernatural spoilers for season six, including a casting spoiler for someone I never thought we'd see again and praise for Jensen on his directing debut.

'Supernatural': Fred Lehne returns as Azazel, plus Jensen Ackles is 'a great director'

We thought we'd seen the last of him, but he's back!

At this weekend's Creation Entertainment Salute to "Supernatural" convention in Parsippany, N.J., Fredric Lehne himself affirms that he will return as the series' original baddie, the Yellow Eyed Demon - also known as Azazel. Zap2it is still awaiting studio confirmation, but for now, we'll take Lehne's word for it.

Lehne says he'll start work on Wednesday, July 14, while the cast and crew is working on the season premiere. Though he has had the most screen time as Azazel, the demon has also been portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Rob Labelle, Mitch Pileggi, and very briefly by Lindsey McKeon.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that Mitch Pileggi will also return to the show -- though whether he'll appear as Azazel or Samuel Campbell, Sam and Dean's grandfather, we don't know.

The demon was killed by Dean in the Season 2 finale, so we're guessing he's returning for a flashback or a time-travel episode. Either that, or Azazel's back from the dead... which isn't exactly a rare occurrence on "Supernatural." It happens just about every Thursday, give or take.

Sera Gamble, who has taken over for Eric Kripke as showrunner for the series' sixth season, has mentioned that this year "Supernatural" will return to a format that closely resembles its first season, so it seems appropriate to bring back the first season's biggest villain.

Meanwhile, the cast and crew have been busy shooting the season's fourth episode, "A Weekend at Bobby's." Series star Jensen Ackles is taking his first big step behind the camera as director, and so far, he's getting rave reviews.

"Had lunch my buddy who just shot SPN episode. NOT saying anthying other than this: 1) Jensen was a great director...2) Blood everywhere!" tweeted Samantha Ferris, who played Ellen Harvelle until she was killed off last season.

The shoot hasn't been all bloody fun and games, though. Zap2it fave Jim Beaver worked a 17-hour day as Bobby Singer (hear that, Katherine Heigl?) and the following day updated his Facebook status to read, "The heatwave hit Vancouver today, and between being sunbaked and allergy-stricken, I'd just as soon have skipped today." Sounds brutal -- but we'd endure it to spend the day getting bossed around by Jensen Ackles. Just sayin'.

Expect some serious violence in the episode. "Haven't had a major all-out fight scene in years," says Beaver. "Halfway through this one and I'm feeling pain in places I didn't know I had places. Fun!" Shooting a fight scene during a heat wave under TV lights doesn't exactly sound fun. "Home at 1 a.m., we'll finish the fight tomorrow," he writes. "When you pull off your shirt and it drips onto the floor, you know it's been a warm day."

Gross!

Gleeks will notice another familiar face in the episode -- Jennifer Aspen, who plays Terri Schuester's enabling sister Kendra on "Glee," makes a memorable appearance.

[Update] Aspen shared the following photo of herself from the "Supernatural" set via her Twitter, @givekendraasong. Looks like Ferris' "Blood everywhere!" tweet was no exaggeration.

~~~~
Fred's back! Fred's back! Sweet! That's one character I truly never thought we'd see again, but leave it to Supenatural to figure out a way to bring him back. And in the season premiere, too. I'm excited! Fred was so awesome as the YED. :-)
I'm glad Jensen's directing debut went so well, and I can't wait to see this episode. Sounds like Jim Beaver has been put through the wringer! Crowley is in that episode, too, so Jensen got to direct Mark Sheppard. Cool!
See, here I'm commenting on your last post and you post this. :) Sounds like you feel a bit better about the season or at least this ep.
This season will have lots of twists and turns, but I'm putting my faith in the writers.
This is the only show I let myself get spoiled. Otherwise I avoid them.
I must have a problem.
ps. how's the heat in Chi town?
I'm definitely excited about the episode that Jensen is directing. Sounds like Bobby gets a lot of action!
For the longest time after getting into SPN fandom on LJ I tried to avoid spoilers. But I have zero willpower. :-)
The heat here is AWFUL. Last summer was lovely. This summer is just brutal.
You know, I keep reading all these spoilers and it sounds to me like Sera has no new ideas at all, and what she's doing instead is simply rewriting the old mytharc.
And if she's doing that, and the YED isn't a flashback/dream sequence, then this will be yet another thing taken from Dean - his kill of the YED.
It's bad enough that Dean's supposed mytharc role in the finale was usurped by a guest-star, and that nothing at all that he was supposedly tested for in season four ever came to fruition (seriously, no one needs to be tested or even resurrected from Hell to play the punching bag), but now if Sera plans to retroactively take away whatever wins from Dean's column that he did rack up in the past, I'm really going to have to rethink my viewing of this show next year.
Don't get me wrong, I love Fred and I love what he did with Azazel, but resurrecting all these past and dead characters isn't leaving me with a good feeling at all. Just seems like so much been there, done that - very literally. I'm actually more worried about this than Christian - who I don't get either, but he is a "new" character, at least, and the jury will have to be out on him until we see what they have planned. Though right now it sounds to me like Christian may simply be replacing Adam, and that they do intend to keep a third brother-like character in the mix from now on.
So far the only thing I am high on is Jensen's directing debut, and I'm so happy to see all this high praise from the guest-stars. I knew he'd do a good job, and I hope this leads to bigger things in the future. :D
You make a very good point. I know she said she wanted to go back to the same feel of season one, but I didn't realized she meant it that literally.
And if she's doing that, and the YED isn't a flashback/dream sequence, then this will be yet another thing taken from Dean - his kill of the YED.
It's GOT to be some kind of flashback, unless they're now going to go back and rewrite canon that whatever the Colt kills really doesn't die. Then again, this IS Sera we're talking about.
It's bad enough that Dean's supposed mytharc role in the finale was usurped by a guest-star,
Oh man, don't get me started!
Though right now it sounds to me like Christian may simply be replacing Adam, and that they do intend to keep a third brother-like character in the mix from now on.
That's my biggest fear with Christian. I hated Adam (though Jake is a great guy) and if they're going down this same route with Christian I will seriously be pissed off.
So far the only thing I am high on is Jensen's directing debut, and I'm so happy to see all this high praise from the guest-stars. I knew he'd do a good job, and I hope this leads to bigger things in the future. :D
I'm SO thrilled for him. It's got to be so nerve wracking, directing for the first time, but it sounds like he's done a fantastic job. :-)
Wasn't the whole point of Adam's return because Dean didn't want to say yes to Michael? So how is that usurping?
Because the whole point is that these were all last minute changes. Jake Abel was shocked to be called back for the finale - he didn't think he was supposed to be (and also said at the JiB con that he thought the scene in the graveyard was terrible, and he was right).
Jensen was supposed to play Michael, just as Jared played Lucifer, twice. They set up everything from the beginning for both brothers to play the respective vessels - otherwise, there was no point to making the angels brothers, with Michael being older and having raised a younger Lucifer. No, neither boy wanted to say "yes", but that wasn't really the point. And then given Kripke's original admitted Thelma and Louise-planned ending, obviously they were both supposed to end up in the pit together. It's the only thing that makes even a little sense out of the last three years or so of mytharc.
Dean's role was changed/thrown out the window rather drastically at the very end - Jared at the LA or JiB (or both) con admitted the planned story changed, and a PA from the set tweeted the story had changed. The same PA even tweeted before the 100th episode about a brother getting a dying angel's grace. That was very obviously Dean looking into the burning grace of a dying Zachariah. And that grace was supposed to come into play at the end (seriously, how did he not die or become blinded?) - yet, it didn't. The webmistress from WinFamilyBusiness was even forced to admit in the last couple of days that she knew there were changes and stuff left on the cutting room floor from the finale (I'm guessing related to Dean's role).
So given all that, plus the fact that Dean had no real role at all in the finale, and he's a lead character, yes, he was usurped.
Wow, I didn't know any of this! Thank you so much for sharing, but now it makes me even madder, knowing things were supposed to be different, especially with Dean. Why in the world were all these changes made??
Why in the world were all these changes made??
The Party Line is going to be that the sixth season renewal was the catalyst for these changes - and to some extent, I'm sure they're right, especially if Kripke's intent was to end the series with both boys having sacrificed themselves to the pit to stop the Apocalypse. A bleak ending, certainly, but one they would have at least managed together.
Also, remember, in early interviews, both Kripke and Sera were quoted as saying the #100th episode would largely focus on Michael and his relationship to Dean. That's why all the stalling with introducing Michael when we got Lucifer right from the get-go. But we see the 100th bore no resemblance at all to the original story. Who knows what we were supposed to learn about Michael at one time. I'm sure we'll never know now.
Anyway, again, I can give them some latitude WRT the sixth season - but only to a very small degree. Given the insta-resurrections of EVERYBODY (negating all sacrifices and making them look silly besides), how hard would it have been really to pop not one Winchester out of the box, but two - or three, counting Adam? Not hard at all. Removing Dean from the mytharc was unnecessary given the end we got. If, for some reason, JPad wasn't coming back next year, and only Jensen was, then yeah, it would make perfect sense to change things to keep Dean topside. But it didn't play out that way, so again, there was no logical story-line reason for these changes, IMO.
We'll have to wait and see now when the new season starts if there is any plot point/story line explanation that would justify changing the fifth season finale.
Exactly. I wanted Sam and Dean to defeat both Lucifer and Michael together, to get that showdown that it appeared everything was leading up to. I expected something to happen that forced Dean to say Yes to Michael. Instead we get Adam as a stand-in. And why? Like you said, the show has set a precedence with bringing people back from the dead, or Hell or wherever, so it would've been the ultimate cliffhanger to have both Sam and Dean fall into the pit. And then next season they're back, but each changed by the experience. But now we've got Dean playing house (and looking miserable) and Sam lurking in the shadows.
We'll have to wait and see now when the new season starts if there is any plot point/story line explanation that would justify changing the fifth season finale.
Honestly, I wouldn't expect it. TPTB just drop plotlines whenever they feel like it, so I'm not holding out hope.
Puh so many news and spoilers ...
As for my part I'll just wait and see what season 6 will bring and how they'll bring it, because everytime I made a guess it turned out to be completely wrong afterwards, so I'll just sit and wait and trust in ... well Jensen as a director! Here I had no doubt at all that he would do a great job ;o)
My head is spinning with all of the spoilers we've been getting lately. I'm excited for Fred and Mitch, but can't even fathom how they're bringing them both back.
And Jensen - it's going to be hard to wait till the fourth episode to see his debut! Thank goodness it's not episode 14 or something. :-)
Jensen's episode just sounds like it'll be fantastic from the guest stars alone too!
Yeah, boy, it sounds like Jensen really had his hands full with his directorial debut - lots of guest stars and from Jim's twitter, lots of action, too!
I didn't know, that Fred was at the Creation Con ... thought they had a big fight a few years ago!?!?
But it's good to have him back ... even for one episode.
Mark is sooo cool. I met him again in June at the T2 Con in London. Back than he didn't know, if he'll be back, but he thought so :).
That same thought crossed my mind when I first heard that he'd been asked to attend the NJ con. I guess they kissed and made up!
Mark is really awesome. I already met him a few times in London and one time in Germany.
I think he is a potential guest for a SPN Creation Con ... he already did a Creation Con last year.
Who knows ... maybe he will come to Chicago. Still not many guests announced so far ... even for the Vancouver Con ... did you hear something?
I haven't heard a thing about additional guests for either con, and the Vancouver one is next month!
With the lack of Jensen at Chicago, they'd better get more people to make up for it. Like Mark or even Matt Cohen or Amy Gumneck. Or Mitch Pileggi. :-) There are a TON of people that have never been to Chicago but have been at other Creation events. Let's get them signed up! I mean, I love Richard and the Ghostfacers, but I've seen them several times. Let's get some fresh faces!
You know what ... I never met the Ghostfacers! So I'm kind of excited to see them.
They only have 5 names on the list for Chicago ... and no Jensen ... they should start bringing some guests!
And for Vancouver ... only 6 so far ... and only 1 month to go. Will you go there?
Oh man, Travis and AJ are freakin' hysterical! I love Travis to pieces. :-) I'm getting my pic taken with both of them at Chicago.
I can't make it to Vancouver this year. I had to sell my tickets. :-( Had some financial stuff at home that had to be taken care of, so I had to cancel my trip. I'm really, really bummed now that I know I won't be seeing Jensen in Chicago.
Crowley and the YED! I love it! I'm thinking that it's got to be a flashback with the YED, since the Colt made him permanently dead, so yeah, why not something dealing with the two of them? That would be neat!
