From Marc Berman at the Programming Insider:

Vampire Diaries - 4.91 million
Supernatural - 3.39 million
America's Next Top Model - 3.24 million
90210 - 2.44 million
Melrose Place - 2.31 million
One Tree Hill (repeat) - 1.13 milion
Gossip Girl (repeat) - 858,000

Holy cow, I never expected Vampire Diaries to pull those kinds of numbers!

Marc gave Supernatural a "disappointing" review, as retention out of Vampire Diaries was only 67%, and last year's season premiere drew 3.96 million. Personally, I don't think VD is a good lead-in for Supernatural. I think Smallville was more compatable.

Once Smallville gets started (Sept. 25) I'll be updating the ratings on Monday to reflect where SV falls in the ratings list.

Ah, vampires. I think you underestimate the Twilight connection...every teenage girl I know was planning on watching this series, since they were hoping for a small-screen Twilight. Plus LJ Smith has her own group of dedicated followers, who were probably hoping for a true-to-the-book series.

Unless the show gets a lot better, I think both groups are going to be sadly disappointed. I thought it was boring, and the characters weren't that true to the novels. I'm guessing that was why the audience dropped off so much. It was probably bedtime for more than half of the audience.

Yeah, I guess the vampire craze is still going strong, eh? I watched it myself, out of curiosity, to see what kind of a good lead-in it would make for SPN (and it's NOT), and was pretty darn bored about halfway through. I know I won't be back for a second episode. We'll find out in the next couple of weeks what the ratings will be with just the dedicated fans watching, and not the curious. :-)

Very disappointing considering all the Twitter hype. But hey it is back on and that is all that matters. :)

And my review is not in on VD's yet. I will watch next week and get back to you.

Aww, don't be disappointed in SPN's ratings! They pulled well over 3 million and for a show in it's fifth year, that's huge! Plus we beat America's Next Top Model and finished second for the week. That's all great!

Season 5 and VD

I read Vampire Diaries way back when I was a little teenager and when I heard about the series, I decided to check the books again to jog my memory. I couldn't even make it past the first chapter. While I'm glad they've adjusted the characters to make them more likable for television, I can't help but resent SV's dislocation.

On the Supernatural front, I hate that they moved its time slot. There are quite a few viewers that, while still awake at that hour, are doing the nightly pre-sleep routine and it will continue to hurt the show. The CW also spent the majority of last season jerking the viewers around with multiple breaks and random programming changes. I know it annoyed me to an extreme degree, and perhaps some other fans are still waiting for the other shoe to drop. I also agree that Smallville was a much better precursor with a shared fan-base.

In contrast, I think some of the SPN fans are straying because of the overall sense of unease in the show now. There used to be noticeable fondness and quirky humor in spades. Even Dean's attempts at humor have teeth now. Its uncomfortable for many of us to see that relationship disintegrate. It seems the gentle humor in the writing now comes from casual references to Fanfiction. While the nod in that direction is appreciated, it lacks the impact. Of course, despite my occasional nostalgia for the "good ole days" it remains my favorite series on television and I'm holding on to the show til the bitter, glorious end...(which is hopefully still a few seasons away -__-*)

Same here! SV was a MUCH more compatible lead-in than VD. VD skews much too young.

On the Supernatural front, I hate that they moved its time slot.

Um, no, they didn't move SPN's time slot. It's still on at 9 pm EST.

In contrast, I think some of the SPN fans are straying because of the overall sense of unease in the show now.

I hear you on that. I know last season got harder and harder to watch, as Sam and Dean's relationship just completely fell apart. It was their bond that drew me to SPN in the first place, and without it, a big part of the show is just missing. But Kripke has stated many times that he WILL put the boys back together, so I'm trusting him on that one. :-)

Of course, despite my occasional nostalgia for the "good ole days" it remains my favorite series on television and I'm holding on to the show til the bitter, glorious end...(which is hopefully still a few seasons away -__-*)

You and me, both! If I made it through season three and didn't walk away in disgust, I can hang on to the glorious end, too. :-)

Really!! VD was sooooooooo boring I was ready for Supernatural after the first 1/2 hour!!! I didn't like it at all and the actors can't act for Sh*te!!! Regarding 'Smallville' - I watched it the first 2 seasons and quickly went on to better shows...can't believe it is still on the air! But now they have moved it to Friday and that is so the 'Kill show' day...don't you think? I would try to watch it on Friday, but missing like 6 seasons of it..I would be totally lost!

And I agree that the tension with Dean and Sam can be felt to the viewers...I hope they get some 'lovey dovey' time soon.

I will be interested on the ratings update...so thanks! ;P

Yeah, we'll see what happens to VD's ratings in the next couple of weeks, when it's just the true fans sticking around, not the curious as well. I watched and didn't care for it, won't be tuning in again.

Been watching SV since day one and although the show has gone downhill, it's still a much better lead-in than VD will ever be. I wish it was still on Thursdays!

I want to see the boys start to forgive one another, too. I miss their close relationship!

Simply because vampires are all the rage now (aka Twilight) and it's a new show. Heck, even I watched it out of curiosity as to how good a lead in it'll be for SPN. (and it's not, by a long shot) But the real numbers will come to light in the next couple of weeks, when it's just the true fans sticking around.

Either way, it's not that bad at all. I'm sure some couldn't have watched it for not being at home, plus, they are still in the 3 million. Vampire Diaries on the other hand... I think after the first couple of eps, it'll die down, just like 90210 did.

Exactly! I've seen SPN's ratings slammed a few places and it really irritates me. I mean, of COURSE people were going to tune into Vampire Diaries. It's brand new! Heck, even I watched it out of curiosity as to how good a lead in it'll be for SPN. (and it's not, by a long shot). And our show is in it's FIFTH YEAR. To pull well over 3 million is fantastic! PLUS we beat ANTM! And we finished in second place. What more DO the critics want? [shakes head]

btw I'll return your PM super soon! *nods* Sorry for the delay. :(

Well, that's a bit disappointing, especially after last season. I have no interest in VD or any other CW show, to be honest, so I don't mind what the lead in is. I'm really hoping that the ratings pick up and encourage CW to renew our show again next year!

I know alot of people tape Supernatural or watch online though because they are into CSI or Grey's and they would rather have supernatural when they can really watch or without commercials, so people watch, they just dont get the ratings.

I am not surprised VD did so well, the big Vampire thing going on now, and I was in Times Square yesterday and one of the biggest billboards was one for VD, so alot of people are seeing the ads.

Yeah, we've got a huge amount of viewers that either DVR it or download the eps online. Which is great that they're watching, but like you said, it doesn't count, which is disappointing. :-(

I knew VD would do well (heck, even I watched out of curiosity) but man, nearly 5 million? Wow! Now we'll see who the true fans are that stick around for the second week.

I can't imagine what audience they were expecting to carry over from VD to SPN??!! First of all VD is aimed at a much younger audience and all the Twilighters. Any teens tuning in for it are gonna tune right out for SPN. AND it's season 5- if they haven't been watching they're surely not gonna start now.

Secondly- the SPN viewers who were interested in another genre show are going to be WAY disappointed over that. I was and so was my roomie. I'll give it another week just because but I expect there's gonna be a serious drop off in the numbers as the hardcore SPN fans give it a skip.

Exactly, I mean even I tuned in to VD see what the hype was all about. A good lead in is a show that's compatible with Supernatural. Like Smallville always was. It's the same type of audience that watches both shows, so you keep a lot of the same viewers from SV to SPN. But VD skews to a much younger audience (teenage girls, mostly) that's not as interested in SPN, so we lost a lot of viewers. :-(

Well both shows are almost the same about surreal things and supernatural has lots of young girls. So I don“t think so that it could affect too much

It makes me mad when people expect a show that's four years into a complex storyline to retain viewers from a brand-new premiere. You can't just jump into SPN like that. I hope they realize that fact.
