Dawn Ostroff comments on Supernatural

It was the CW's turn at the TCA press tour today in Pasadena, CA and here's what Dawn Ostroff had to say about Supernatural:
Although SUPERNATURAL creator Eric Kripke has hinted this could be the last year for him, Ostroff sees that seminal series also staying on the air for some time.
“We hope SUPERNATURAL will go on,” Ostroff says. “Eric has done a great job creatively. The show has gotten stronger every year. We’re hopeful it will stay on the air for a long time.”

Wow, I actually agree with Ostroff about something!

Date: 2009-08-05 01:16 am (UTC)I'm kinda straddling the fence about a Season 6--if it does happen, I think that should be it.

Date: 2009-08-08 08:53 am (UTC)Ostroff is only backing Supernatural because its bringing money in now. Pity she couldn't see beyond the $ signs before and let Eric work without interference, even when spoilers worry me he makes it work. Bit like Jensen making lines work that don't always seem right in the script as Sera has commented in the past!!
We can critise Dawn but as employees no-one on the Supernatural set can do it quite so well!!!
It's about time she agreed with us about Supernatural and said nice things.

Date: 2009-08-10 07:03 pm (UTC)I really do think that if season six is given the go-ahead, the CW will throw enough money at Eric to convince him to stay. :-)

Imagine the money it could have been bringing in all along if CW would leave the freaking budget alone AND let Eric work without interference. But they kept cutting the budget and giving it NO advertising. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense! :-/

It's taken her nearly five years, but better late than never, eh?

Date: 2009-08-09 09:18 am (UTC)So it's not necessarily good for their careers to be stuck in this series that can't provide them with the best scripts/production because of the CW budget limits. If the CW gave them back the budget they had for the pilot (which I just watched again) so they could have a really good soundtrack and a few better effects, it would make a big difference, it just could be so much better than it is, and it's such a shame to waste the actors' time if it's not going to be that good.

Date: 2009-08-10 07:01 pm (UTC)I have to agree with you. I've enjoyed seasons one and two the most. Hated season three with a passion!
Dawn hasn't given them back their budget. The lack of budget and loss of the good music made it all a bit lower quality and just not as good
Yep, very true. And it makes ZERO sense. I mean, SPN is consistently in the top three ratings wise every week. Imagine what it could be if the CW would throw some money at it instead of taking it away every year! She says she wants the show to stick around, but yet she sabotages it with a small budget and no advertising. ARGH!
Also, Eric seems to have a short attention span (killing off the YED early because he got bored with it, put angels in for a few episodes, see how that works, oh ratings! let's keep them) so I think the direction will be pretty random if he's forced to go to S6,
Personally, I'm hoping that Eric gets back to the tried and true formula of seasons one and two that made this show a success. Enough with giant balls of doom and angst! Can we get back to the two brothers on the road, "saving people, hunting things"?
The actors don't seem as committed; they appreciate a steady job but on the other hand, are losing out on any film or other work opportunity except the very few that only take the exact 3 months they have off.
I guess if I were them I really would be happy just to be working right now, and I'm greedy and want the show to continue to season six. :-) But I do understand that they have career aspirations beyond Supernatural. They both have the potential to be really big stars away from the CW. But it's going to be hard to let them go! :-)
