Just read this little blurb over at Media.com about SPN's episode 4x12...

Supernatural (CW, 9:00 PM EST)

A stage magician on the skids makes a deal with the devil for real magic powers in a concept inspired by Clive Barker's short story The Last Illusion. The show also wins mondo brownie points for featuring the greatest episode title of all time. (You'll have to tune in to find out what it is.)

P.S. - the title is Criss Angel is a Douche Bag

This is the first reference to Clive Barker that I've seen in regards to this episode. I've never read that story. Have any of you? And if so, does it sound like the plot to Criss Angel is a Douche Bag?

And I also swore I heard that Criss Angel may make a cameo, but now I can't find that article. Did anyone else hear that?

Nope, not heard the Clive Barker refernce before. Though, I swear I saw that plot on one of those Night Gallery-like anthology shows. I haven't heard that CA was going to make an appearance from any source, but I saw the rumor on another LJ yesterday.

Ah, ha! So maybe that's where I read it, too, and now can't find it. I'd laugh my ass off if he appeared on it. :-)

It doesn't sound too much like Barker's The Last Illusion to me, but it's been a long time since I read it. I'm sure I have the short story collection here somewhere. There was a movie version starring Scott Bakula, so they found a way to turn the short story into a full-length movie.

I think it would be hilarious if Criss Angel showed up; I would guess if he really took offense he might have sued or tried to block them from using that title, so maybe he thinks it's funny.

No way! Scott Bakula?? I love him! How on earth did I not know about this movie??

I would laugh my butt off if he showed up. I mean, I'm sure Kripke had to get his permission (especially since the title isn't very flattering!) so Criss I'm sure said yes because hello, free publicity! And even better if he shows up at the end or something and shows Sam and Dean how magic really works. :-)

Maybe because it came out in 1995? Srsly, go to imdb.com and look up Lord of Illusions. Some of the posters are extremely reminiscent of Quantum Leap! I was still very, very much obsessed with him at the time the movie came out, but it wasn't playing anywhere near me. I remember the manager at my local video store was kind enough to order it when it came out on video, knowing that at least I would rent it! He said he'd ordered the unrated version because he knew I'd want to, ahem, see as much of Scott Bakula as I could. And yes, it's worth tracking down!

I just read the synopsis, and it does sound a bit similar to what little I know about the episode. Hm.

I just had a thought. Wouldn't it be a kick to have Dean utter the title phrase, or whatever the network will let him get away with, then have Sam snicker and let him know that Criss Angel is, like, standing right behind Dean? That could be most amusing!

LOL! That could be why!

Ok, now you're going to get me on the hunt. :-)

ROTFL! That would be priceless! And it's SO easy to think of Dean uttering the word "douche" again. :-)

I read the short story and watched the movie with Scott Bakula a long time ago. But I recall the story was about Harry D'Amour, a PI, investigating an illusionist that was so good he figured he relied on the occult to perform his tricks. Interestingly, Harry D'Amour's body is covered in tattoos protecting him from evil.
Thanks for the spoilers :)

I can't believe this was a Scott Bakula movie and I didn't know about it! I love him!

Oooh, I can see why this would be right up Kripke's alley, especially with the tattoos and such.

Thanks so much for the info!

There's a new clip for Ep. 4.12, and it is hilarious.
Spoilery, of course.

Argh! Deborah you're so tempting me to watch but I'm staying strong and will remain unspoiled (well, to video at least!) as difficult as it may be. :-) Sounds really funny, though!

Sorry, Barb! I forgot you were trying to remain spoiler free! You will have a treat waiting for you on Thursday then!
