Milky Way cake - eat up!

agt_spookyIn my post about my birthday yesterday I mentioned my Milky Way cake. It's a special family recipe that my grandmother passed down to my mother, who in turned passed it on to me.
Ever since I was a little kid, this was "my cake" that my mom made for me for every birthday. She never made it any other time, just once a year for me, so it became really special to me.
When I got married and moved out of my parent's house, my mom gave me the recipe and I've been making the cake myself now for the last 14 years.
But I have no one to pass the recipe on to. I don't have any children and it kinda saddens me that this awesome cake is just going to disappear when I'm gone.
So I'm passing it on to all of YOU. :-) Give it a try, and who knows, maybe it'll become a family tradition for you, too. :-)
Milky Way cake recipe
6 full size Milky Way bars
1 cup of unsalted butter
2 cups of sugar
4 eggs
2 1/2 cups of flour
1/2 tsp. of baking soda
1 1/4 cups of buttermilk
1 tsp. of vanilla
chocolate frosting
Directions:
Melt Milky Way bars and 1/2 cup of unsalted butter in sauce pan over low heat. In one bowl, cream remaining butter and sugar until fluffy. Do not use an electric mixer for this recipe - mix all ingredients by hand. Add eggs, one at a time, beat well. Mix flour and baking soda in separate bowl. Alternately add small portions of the flour/soda mixture and the buttermilk to the butter/sugar/egg mixture until all has been incorporated and the batter is smooth, no lumps. Add the melted candy, mix well. Stir in vanilla.
Bake in greased AND floured bunt pan at 350 degrees for 1 hour. This cake is notorious for sticking in the pan, so do use cooking spray and flour.
After cake is baked and cooled, remove from bunt pan and frost with chocolate frosting.
Grab a big glass of milk and enjoy!
