Exclusive Interview: PRODUCER/DIRECTOR ROBERT SINGER GETS SENT TO HELL FOR 'SUPERNATURAL'
What lies in store for the Winchester brothers for the remainder of Season 4? We get some cryptic hints

SUPERNATURAL – the good verses evil fun and funny The CW show – took a different turn in its fourth season. No longer is it a single demon or bounty that the Winchester brothers are working on or trying to uncover, but instead we went a little more worldly. As in the end of the world, as the battle between Heaven and Hell became the focus of the show.
While he was very reluctant to give anything away in terms of what we might be seeing in the mythology aspects of the show, executive producer and director Robert Singer spoke with iF Magazine about SUPERNATURAL and what the rest of the season may hold. Again, while he’s reserved, there are some nice little hints that should be enough to whet the appetites of fans of the show.
iF Magazine: This season of SUPERNATURAL introduced the opposite side of the coin for the Winchester brothers with Heaven, God and angels all introduced in the first episode helping to bring back Dean from hell. Was that always the plan after the third season or was it something that came up later on?
ROBERT SINGER: That was the plan we came up with and the end of last season. Getting an early pick up was helpful in that we could plan ahead early
iF: How did the writer’s strike from last year affect your writing this year, if at all?
SINGER: The writers strike just made us accelerate the plans we had for last season.
We got to show mythology quicker than we had intended.
iF: I know you had to truncate the third season, so was there a few things you wanted to do last year that we are seeing this year or is it all pretty much a new, clean slate?
SINGER: A clean slate.
iF: I love that the writers of SUPERNATURAL are willing to take chances with the episodes we are given and that they aren’t all having to deal with the mythology or the theme of the season. What’s the idea behind that, to give the audience a little more than just the same old week in and week out or to stretch the writer’s creativity or both?
SINGER: We like to mix it up. When we do stand-alones, we want it to feel like a small movie. That can be horror, comedy horror, or in some cases fantasy. We make a concerted effort that when we do a mythology episode that we really move the mythology along. That the audience gets some real movement, not just dribs and drabs.
iF: It seems SUPERNATURAL is a perfect outlet for these type of comedic or throwback episodes we see on occasion. Are there any future episodes this season that we can look forward to and what might the plotlines be?
SINGER: I think we are pretty much done with the broad comedy episodes for this year, although we try to infuse every episode with some level of comedic moments.
iF: Speaking of which, I simply loved the “Monster Movie” episode, it did everything right, from being filmed in black and white, to the throwback direction, to the classic monster scenes in that episode. Whose idea was it to do an episode from an era gone by?
SINGER: It was [creator] Eric [Kripke] and Ben [Edlund's] idea. I was lucky enough to get to direct it.
I'm glad you appreciated the homage images to the early films.
iF: Heaven and Hell is a big theme this year with Lucifer trying to unlock the seals to bring hell on Earth. While the show has dealt with demons and monsters since its inception, idea of Heaven is new for the show. Was it just a nice fit for the show, or just time for it to come about or just opened up a slew of new possibilities for the show that wouldn’t have been there before?
SINGER: It seemed a logical progression, but Eric really conceptualized it.
iF: We are pretty much in the dark as to why the angels and God lifted Dean from Hell, but they have hinted that he has some purpose … possibly other than stopping Lucifer from unlocking all of the seals to Hell. Are we going to find this out along the season, hopefully?
SINGER: You will get the answer to that question by season’s end, but not from me here
and now. Sorry
iF: Dean has never been much of a believer in a higher power yet after all he has been through still is resistant to accepting it … are we going to see this change as the season progresses?
SINGER: See answer above.
iF: What can we look forward to for the remaining fourth season? Any surprises we should expect or interesting twists to look forward to?
SINGER: We have some big surprises coming up, but they are all mythology based. I
appreciate the question, but you will have to stay tuned.
iF: Do you feel like there’s only a finite amount of “supernatural” creatures left to explore on the show, or do you still feel that concept is limitless?
SINGER:: We used to worry about that, but this year we have seemed to hit a creative
stride in which good original ideas have been flowing. So, short answer, no.
iF: Are we going to see more development of Castiel and learn more about him and why he was the one chosen to bring Dean out of hell?
SINGER: You will definitely see more of Castiel. It's not so important why he
was chosen, but more what his real mission is. Again, stay tuned.
iF: Sam has come under heavy scrutiny from the angels and God himself wants him not to use his powers to expel demons … is the first of what we may see Sam turn evil? Now that’ll be fun to watch!
SINGER: Good question. Wish I could help you out there.
iF: Will Ruby be responsible for any of these changes that Sam if he indeed goes through, goes through?
SINGER: Ruby has a definite part in what is to become of Sam.
iF: Will we continue to see Sam clash with the angels over what he should be doing and not be doing?
SINGER: Yes, this is very much part are storyline. Sorry for being less than forthcoming on some of your questions, but I don't want to spoil what we think are going to be some real surprises for our fans.

Thank you GOD we're done with the comedic episodes this season. I've had about enough of those, especially since I only found one of them to be truly funny. And oh joy, sounds like we'll be seeing more of Ruby. [sigh] But at least we'll be seeing more of Castiel!

It's a very noncommittal interview, isn't it? "Tune in for more" would have covered almost everything!

Date: 2008-11-26 01:11 am (UTC)Yes, THANK YOU. Like you, I don't mind seeing the boys get naked, but it's all been pointless, IMO, and the Sam/Ruby scene seriously made me ill. And there's more pointless sex to come after hiatus. [sigh]

Date: 2008-11-26 01:13 am (UTC)LOL! I would, too! Heck, I would've rather had the waitress/demon from Lazarus Rising!
And yes, let's have the drama please, more angsty boys is good!
Thank you, I agree! One funny episode a season worked really well, but to have three in eight weeks was beyond bizarre. Can we get back to the business of hunting ghosts now?

Date: 2008-11-25 11:13 pm (UTC)Angel's Grace
1. Castiel will end up ripping out his grace so he can be 'a real live boy'. The grace will be used to a) kill Lucifer b) restore the world after it has been devastated. c) save Dean from death, or give Dean the power to kill Lucifer. d) see c. except with Sam and/or it will have the power to cleanse his demon blood from him e) kill Lilith f) save Uriel or some other angel from dying.
2. All of the above except with Uriel's grace, and he will have to be one of the 'monkeys'.
3. All of the above except with Anna's grace.
Angels with Human Hosts
1. Castiel or Uriel's human host will be killed and Sam or Dean will have to agree to give him his body to fight Lucifer (or Alastair or Lilith or some other demon baddie) This would probably Castiel into Dean or Uriel into Sam from how the relationships have been defined.
2. Dean is going to be inhabited by the Archangel Michael, and Sam will be inhabited by Lucifer and they will fight the final battle with each other.
The Brothers Winchester Killing Eachother
1. The only way to keep the final seal from being broken will be for Dean to kill Sam or Sam to kill Dean. But it will be another test from the angels and they won't kill each other and everything will be peachy. Or Sam will die and go to Hell and one of the angels, or maybe Dean with an angel's grace, will pull him out and his brand new body will have no demon blood.
Ruby
a) Ruby is actually evil and grooming Sam to be a powerful body for Lucifer to inhabit. (I can't take credit for this one, it is actually someone else's, I'll have to look for whose, but it makes a ton of sense to me) b) Ruby is actually Lilith and Sam will have to kill her. Ruby has slept with Sam, you know she has to die. c) Ruby will go to Hell and be pulled out and won't be a demon anymore. d)an angel's grace will be used to save Ruby and cleanse her of being a demon.(GAG)
Dean
Every situation involvng the angels, including the one with Anna, will have actually been a test and if he decides in the end that he believes in God then he can kill Lucifer, or become an angel or both.

Date: 2008-11-26 01:18 am (UTC)Ok, here's what I'd like to see, based on your thoughts:
1. Castiel will end up ripping out his grace so he can be 'a real live boy'. The grace will be used to c) save Dean from death, or give Dean the power to kill Lucifer.
The only way to keep the final seal from being broken will be for Dean to kill Sam or Sam to kill Dean. But it will be another test from the angels and they won't kill each other and everything will be peachy.
b) Ruby is actually Lilith and Sam will have to kill her. Ruby has slept with Sam, you know she has to die.
Alright then! Now all we have to do is wait and see if your predictions come true. :-)
