When you get these scripts for Supernatural do you just praise God you're getting something that cool?
Jared Padalecki: "Yeah, totally. I was looking for the email address of our writers. I wanted to send him and say, 'Listen, you killed me. I worked my ass off and I'm exhausted, but thank you.' Because when it's all done, you know, when you read it you're going…you've been working 16 hours a day and you're like, 'Awww, I'm in every scene.' Like, 'Kill me.' But then after you shoot it, you're like, 'Man, 30 years from now I'm not going to remember how tired I am, but I will be able to go back and watch it and be proud of what I did.'"
How do you keep in shape for all this, because they do put you through hell?
Jared Padalecki: "They do. I have dogs. I run them every day and I have a gym in my garage so I go out and I lift weights. I mean, I grew up playing sports and lifting weights and stuff like that, so I just try… It's kind of like a lifestyle. I don't think of it as staying in shape. It's just like, hey, when I wake up in the morning, it's good to relieve some stress and hit the gym. I don't want to be like muscle man, but it's nice to keep active."
Do you like how they've taken your character this year?
Jared Padalecki: "I love it. I love how they've taken my character. I like when Sam starts to be a little bit darker and a little bit more individual. I mean at the beginning, he was sort of teen angst – the why me? Why? Why? Why? He accepted it, but now he's really embracing his life and his powers even. He's like, 'Listen, I'm doing it for the right reason.' And it's exciting to watch what's going on because you know the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and he's doing it for the right reasons. But, you know, we'll see what happens."
Okay, he's doing it for the right reasons yet the angels don't want him to do it, so now I'm totally confused.
Jared Padalecki: "Exactly."
Am I supposed to be confused?
Jared Padalecki: "You are no less confused or more confused than I am because [Eric] Kripke, he's always kept things really close to the vest. He doesn't really tell us a whole lot. Like I think he likes the idea that Jared and Jensen [Ackles] are going through what Sam and Dean are going through. It's like we act well by default. It's like, 'I don't know so I'm just going to…'"
Is there one script that you read that you can point to and go, "This is it. This is Supernatural?"
Jared Padalecki: "You know what? Every year the season premiere and the season finale are just dynamite. We're working so hard and great actors and great directors, and stuff like that. It's really exciting to work with, so I have to say the beginning and end of every season have really encapsulated [it]. I mean the pilot was tremendous and since then we've had so many great episodes here and there, but definitely we start off and end all the seasons with a bang."
They've gone away from using the music in it as much as they used to.
Jared Padalecki: "It's unfortunate. I think, maybe I'm not supposed to say this, but I think it was a budget issue. I think with what's going on and the actors' strike really kind of tore up Hollywood, and I think the budget for a lot of shows kind of went down. They just don't have… It costs a lot of money to get AC/DC, you know? They want their chunk of change, too. And they should – they're awesome."
One movie question – what can fans expect from Friday the 13th?
Jared Padalecki: "Well if you're a fan of Friday the 13th already it's already going to plug you’re your psyche and you're really going to communicate with the characters and the action. And if you're not, it's just going to be a bad ass fun, scream and cheer movie."
Jeffrey Dean Morgan comes up behind Jared Padalecki. Morgan plays Padalecki's dad in Supernatural.
