Ratings for Monster Movie:
From Marc Berman at the Programming Insider:
Smallville - 4.15 million
One Tree Hill - 3.47 million
Gossip Girl - 3.30 million
America’s Next Top Model (clip show) - 3.21 million
Supernatural - 3.06 million
The Game - 1.81 million
Everybody Hates Chris - 1.79 million
90210 (repeat) - 1.73 million
Privleged (repeat) - 1.22 million
Valentine - 1.02 million
In Harm’s Way – 770,000
Easy Money – 753,000
For easy reference/comparison:
Lazarus Rising - 3.96 million (pre-empted in Chicago)
Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester - 3.18 million
In the Beginning - 3.51 million
Metamorphosis - 3.14 million
~~~~
Wow....we just got killed this week. I hate to see us keep dropping from week to week. We're getting much too close to going under 3 million already. :-(
I was just talking to my husband about the disappointing ratings and he made a comment that not everyone likes funny episodes, and did I know how previous funny ones did in past seasons. I do, and it looks like he may have a point:
Hell House - 3.76 million (#19 of 22)
Tall Tales - 3.03 million (#18 of 22)
Hollywood Babylon - 3.25 million (#12 of 22)
Bad Day at Black Rock - 3.03 million (#5 of 16)
Ghostfacers - 2.22 million (#16 of 16)
So with the exception of Bad Day at Black Rock, our humorous ones really haven't ranked all that high. Doesn't mean I'm still not disappointed in the ratings for Monster Movie, but it does put it in a new perspective.
Date: 2008-10-17 04:27 pm (UTC)I have a question about ratings, though. What about folks who watch religiously but don't get CW? I'm up in Canada and I get CW, but my brother, who lives further north, does not. Well, he could if he got a dish, but his cable supplier doesn't have it. In previous seasons, CityTV in Toronto aired it at the same time as the CW network. This year, it's SunTV (in these parts) and my brother doesn't get a SunTV affiliate either, so he has to wait and watch it on the Space Channel Saturday afternoon. So he's still watching, but not Thursday night at 9. My question is this: Who do the ratings count? Anyone watching on CW? OR just select households? Or what? I never really concerned myself with it until now but I'm curious. Can anyone help me out?
Date: 2008-10-17 04:44 pm (UTC)Good for you!
You should know, my DVDs are never ever allowed to sleep over at someone else's house. My kids when they were little? Sure, no problem. My Supernatural DVDs? That's a different story
LOL! Oh man, you're too funny!
Viewers are only counted if you're here in the U.S. and are a Nielsen household with this box hooked up to your TV that records what you watch. Like me, I watch it live every week, but I don't count, because I don't have a Nielsen box. Heck, in my whole life I've never known a single person to have ever been chosen to be a Nielsen family!
Did that clear things up a bit for you?
Date: 2008-10-17 05:35 pm (UTC)Nielsen families suck! They can't keep counting the rating based on that :(
Date: 2008-10-20 12:44 am (UTC)Yeah, I know, it really, really hurt to get beat by both of them this week. [sigh]
I agree. The ratings system is pretty antiquated and Nielsen needs to improve it, big time.
Date: 2008-10-18 01:22 am (UTC)Made me wonder, though, if it was an age thing. Or maybe my in-laws just don't have the best taste in good eps. Yeah, I think that's it ;)
Date: 2008-10-20 12:48 am (UTC)That could very well be one factor, truly. And when I told my husband that Monster Movie was probably going to be funny and campy, he didn't want to watch either, because he doesn't think that humor fits with the Supernatural universe.
So it looks like there's more than one reason!
Geez, these people don't know what they're missing, do they?
Date: 2008-10-18 05:09 am (UTC)Why? It's so.....bad.
I was never a big fan of that show, but I've heard so many people complain about it, how it's slipped in quality and writing over the past few seasons. So why are these people still watching it???? Sheesh. *iz frustrated*
*continues to worry about SPN's declining ratings*
Hopefully we'll bounce back next week.
I have to admit I'm one of those crazy people. :-) It's like, I've been watching SV from day one and even though it's gone drastically downhill, it's like a train wreck that I can't look away from! LOL! (thank god I'm not a Nielsen family *g*)
I know. I hope we're done with this downward trend, that's for sure!
Date: 2008-10-18 01:44 pm (UTC)I think maybe it was just that this episode was so campy and very much an episode for the hardcore fans, like 'Ghostfacers' that you were either going to love it or hate it and it wasn't one of those that was necessary to watch for the mythology or continuity or anything, so that could've been what happened.
The irony is, those 'funny' episodes happen to be some of my all-time favorites, or at least my most quoteable episodes. I mean, Ghostfacers, Bad Day at Black Rock and Hollywood Babylon, are in my Top 10 favorite episodes (along with the Pilot, In the Beginning, Lazarus Rizing, What is and What Should Never Be, All Hell Breaks Loose, Parts 1 and 2 - they so count as one, Mystery Spot, and No Rest For the Wicked).
Anyway, ratings shouldn't even matter in this day and age, they're completely antiquated and they don't even give a realistic idea of the size of an audience that a show actually has. I mean, I want a Nielson box and you know what, they won't give me one, probably for that reason!
We all know that Kripke has said '5 seasons and no more' so as long as a renewal comes through we really can't bitch and considering the fact that, from what I've heard about the other shows on the CW, Dawn would be completely braindead (not that she isn't already) to not renew SPN. I mean, she's had horrible luck with new shows the past few seasons and SPN's been fairly consistent, which is something she desperately needs.
It's just said that the big networks are talking about cancelling shows that are pulling in 9 mill vs. 10 mill like last year and we're so jazzed about 3, it just goes to show you that publicity really does go a long way (because let's face it, Milo is on Heroes, Jared is on SPN, they were both on GG; there is no reason why their shows couldn't be as successful as each other if they were given the same amount of promotion and were on equal networks, but no, they get a big network and billboards and comics and webisodes and we get the CW and Dawn 'dumbass' Ostroff.
(Sorry for the venting...)
Good point. There are apparently a lot of people who just don't think that humor like that fits in with the Supernatural universe. They don't know what they're missing!
Same here! I've watched Hell House about a million times.
Anyway, ratings shouldn't even matter in this day and age, they're completely antiquated and they don't even give a realistic idea of the size of an audience that a show actually has.
I've been saying the same thing for years! There has GOT to be a better, and more accurate, way of compiling this kind of data.
I know what you mean, but Dawn hates SPN because she "inherited" it from the WB merger. It's not her own show, which is why she came up with Reaper. And if we keep getting beat by her other shows, GG and 90210 I wouldn't put it past her to chuck SPN to the curb. :-(
it just goes to show you that publicity really does go a long way
You're telling me! Can you imagine how SPN's ratings might be if she took out ads in magazines or in the TV Guide??
(Sorry for the venting...)
Don't apologize! That's what LJ's are for. :-)
