Hey folks! I'm back! Did ya miss me? :-)

I had intended to be online yesterday, but I got sidelined with a horrible head cold the day I came back from New Jersey, so ended up taking yesterday off of work to lay in bed and cough and sneeze. Con crud. Lovely. Blech.

So since I was out in New Jersey the night that In The Beginning aired, I haven't had a chance until now to post everyone's favorite fangirl's watercooler review of the episode over at TVGuide.com.

Take it away, Tina Charles!

Supernatural

Episode Recap: "In the Beginning"

Castiel did his mind meld thing on Dean and bent time to send him back to 1973 where he encountered his dad, mom and grandparents. In what turned about to be an origins episode, Dean finally learned the truth about his mom and her family; how the Yellow-Eyed Demon (YED) became involved in their lives; and even how the beloved Impala became the Winchesters’ car of choice.

I don’t know about you guys, but when the end credits hit, I was seriously speechless. Good thing I quickly got over it because I had to write a column about "In the Beginning" and figure out how to capture everything that happened in this episode without sounding incoherent. It was satisfying in so many ways. Yes, I know Sammy was in this one for all of two seconds, and I really miss it when the boys aren’t together in the Impala on the way to their next case, but we got so many answers on things that involved the younger brother and one big question that will probably play out for the rest of the season.

The Answers

Mary’s past
Sam and Dean’s mom came from a family of hunters. She was a hunter! And a very good one, she was sort of kickin’ Dean’s butt there outside the diner. I really didn’t see that one coming. I always thought she would have some sort of knowledge about the supernatural, just not from a hunter’s point of view. And how much did Sam remind me of her when she told Dean she wanted out of hunting, that she wanted a normal safe life with a husband and kids. But I was also reminded of Dean when she told the YED she would kill him for murdering John. Speaking of…

Mary’s deal with the YED
Again, I always thought Mary had made some deal. I thought maybe it was because li’l Dean was terminally ill or something like that. But I really liked the way this all went down. The Demon broke John’s neck. Mary was so in love with him, plus the Demon just killed her parents, so she made the deal to bring John back to life. Now it makes so much sense why she apologized to Sam in "Home." We’ve waited since Season One to get the answer to why she walked passed Dean and said "Sam. I’m sorry." Did you notice they played that clip during the recap as well? Back when Dean first got to the diner and he took a peek at the newspaper that read "April 30, 1973," all I could think about was that it was almost ten years to the day before Sammy was born.

The Demon’s involvement with the Winchesters
Well we saw how the YED became interested in the Winchester/Campbell family; specifically how he became interested in Mary. That thing sure liked to play favorites. He took a "liking" to Mary. Sam eventually became his favorite. How creepy was it when the Demon in Grandpa’s body sniffed Dean to see if he was one of his psychic kids? He handpicked strong parents and arranged for bad things to happen to them. He offered them a deal and said that when he comes back in ten years they’d have to give up something. And it wasn’t their souls.

Other answers
On a much lighter note, we also found out a couple of awesome things, like the origin of Sam and Dean’s names. They were named after Mary’s late mom and dad: Samuel and Deanna. I do think it’s kind of funny Dean was named after a woman. Just saying…Dean encouraging John to buy the ’67 Chevy Impala was priceless.

The Questions

The Demon’s End Game
The Demon also said that he had some sort of end game. How tied into this whole Lucifer apocalypse is this going to be? What was that whole psychic kids Survivor game that went down in "AHBL Part 1" all about? And more importantly, what is happening to Sam? The demon blood that he swallowed as a baby makes him big and strong and powerful. Plus, Sam was going through something when he got in the car with Ruby. I know we only saw him for a split second, but there was this whole undercurrent of something not quite right going on. I can’t wait to get more answers on this.

Dean’s purpose
Castiel sent Dean to 1973 for the truth. He led Dean to believe he could stop whatever it was that started the entire nightmare for the Winchester family, but that was never the reason. After all, he kept telling Dean he had to stop it. Once they were back to the future, he said it again, but in such a different context. Castiel said Sam was headed down a dangerous road. I assume it’s the fact Sam’s has been using his powers. Then he said that he and his posse had no idea where it’s gonna lead so it’s Dean’s job to stop it. "Or they will." Those words were scary to hear, but exciting at the same time. This all harkened back to Season Two, when it was Dean’s mission to save Sam. Although John said if he couldn’t he’d have to kill him. Wonder if those words are going to be weighing on Dean’s mind for the near future?

Sam’s agenda
"Ready?"

"Definitely."

Where in the world was Sam going with Ruby? This is the second time this season he’s left Dean sleeping in the hotel room. "In the Beginning" ended with a "to be continued." Next week, are we going to learn what they were up to while Dean was playing Marty McFly? Or will that happen sometime down the road? Cause the previews looked like something else was going on. Let’s just say I’m getting anxious. We got some questions and answers about Sam’s past, now it’s time to get some on his present and I guess his future too.

Other thoughts

I don’t know about you guys, but Season Four is rockin’ like nobody’s business. Jensen said in an interview with TV Guide Network that this the season of payoffs. And so far, that’s what’s been happening. It’s so satisfying it’s not even funny. I feel like we’re being rewarded for our loyalty to this awesome show.

The casting was pure excellence. Bringing in Mitch Pileggi of X-Files fame was a cool move. I just saw him on an episode of Brothers and Sisters too. He was scary after the YED possessed him.

They got the right actors to play Mary and John as well. I could see Samantha Smith and Jeffrey Dean Morgan in these two. Amy Gumenick (Mary) did an amazing job. I wish we had seen more of Matt Cohen (John). He used to be on a show called South of Nowhere.

One thing was a little weird. The actress who played Deanna Campbell (grandma) was Allison Hossack. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t she play the mother in Reaper? The one with the guy named Sam who hunts down demons and just may be the son of the Devil? I also remember her from her days when she was on Another World.

Dean was completely heartbreaking in this episode. After Mary told him she would never want her kids to be raised in a hunter-type of environment, my heart broke for him. When he told his mom that on November 2, 1983 to not get out of bed, my heart broke for him. And also, when he arrived too late to stop Mary from making the deal my heart broke for him. Jensen did such an incredible job. But he has been doing that all season long, and all series long for that matter.

Dean Van Halen = awesome.

When I watched Samuel Campbell do his gruff "I’m a seasoned crusty hunter schtick," I saw the John Winchester post-Mary’s death; the one we saw in "Dead Man’s Blood" and "Salvation"; the one with the one-track mind who was hard on his kids (See "Something Wicked"). Again, Sam reminded me of Mary – she wanted to run away with John. Sam ran away to college just to get out of the hunter life.

Didn’t you immediately feel the connection between John and Dean in that diner?

We met a young Daniel Elkins, which was very cool.

It was odd to see Dean in the minister garb without Sam being there. But it was great to see where Sam and Dean got their hunting instincts from; it runs in the family.

Part of me thought there was going to be a Marty McFly moment and Mary would unknowingly develop a crush on her son. For those of you who haven’t seen it, go rent Back to the Future. Right now.

Dean had more flashes of hell. I wonder when those are going to start to kick in even more.

I’m really hoping that with Supernatural being one of the few scripted shows on Thursday night (the vice-presidential debates were on), that more people sampled Supernatural. I hope they liked it and they stick around for more goodness to come.

Final Thoughts on "In the Beginning"

This one was definitely a jaw-dropper especially for those of us watching Supernatural since Season One. It was an awesome episode, one I’ll probably be referring back to all season long. I’m beyond glad Dean now knows the truth of what kicked off a nightmare that has never really ended for his family. I’m wondering how much he’s going to tell Sam about his experience. I’m also wondering what this means for the brothers as we go on. Jeremy Carver crafted a well-written episode and it answered so many questions and posed a few more, something a really good episode is supposed to do.

~~~~~
Well, what did YOU guys think of In the Beginning? Time travel episodes always make my head hurt, but Tina once again did a great job of summing up my feelings as well. I was totally afraid this episode was going to jump the shark, but thankfully there were no time machines involved and I'm totally cool with how Castiel sent Dean back.
My heart aches for Dean, though, having to experience all of that and be unable to change anything. The best part of the episode was when Dean told the YED to look into his eyes and know that he would be the one to kill him. Chilling!
Overall I was really satisfied with this "origins" episode and the questions that it answered. That's one thing that Kripke's been pretty good at doing - not dragging things out too long.
So I'm thinking there's gonna be some smackdown coming between Dean and Sam this week if Dean goes to that address Castiel gave him and sees Sam using his Yoda powers.
Hold on to your hats, folks, 'cause I think we're about to really get into it.
Thanks for posting Betinna's commentary.
For those wondering about Sam's absence, I found this on line...
"Mitch Pileggi said in an interview that Jared went to Hawaii while this episode was filmed. As a joke, the crew taped postcards from Hawaii on the front of the camera while filming to irk Jensen. That story alone makes Sam’s absence worth it. '
The complete article can be found here http://blogcritics.org/archives/2008/10/0 5/1707372.php
Hey there! :-)
I read that story in Mitch's interview, too, and if it's true, Jensen ought to kick Jared's butt for taking off to beautiful Hawaii while Jensen was toiling away for a week! LOL!
Hi! Glad you're back!
Several things --
1) Thanks for posting these each week. I enjoy those watercooler reviews, but I never think to look for them myself.
2) Thanks for post the link last week to SPNMom's EyeCon Orlando report; it was a lot of fun.
3) In that report, she said, "We also spent a bit of time talking about his dogs and them getting 'skunked'. Apparently it happens more frequently than he would like."
My dog used to get skunked several times a year, and my brother sent me a "recipe" that he got from a chemistry magazine. It really works, and I'd like to pass it on to Jared. I know we can't contact him directly, but I figure you'll know the contact addy or email that someone will pass it on to him directly; I haven't the foggiest. Can you help? (If you prefer not to post it directly, email is starwatcher -at- dishmail -dot- net)
And here's the info, in case you, or anyone you needs the help.
The man who devised this recipe was a chemist with a skunked dog, who was unsatisfied with the other treatments, so he went into his little workshop and starting analyzing and mixing... *g* I just wish he'd discovered this many years previously.
Anyway, keep on hand bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide (the dilute, household stuff), a box of baking soda, and liquid soap. (Dish soap is acceptable.)
In a large container (like a mixing bowl), pour several pints of H2O2. (You decide, depending on size of dog.) For each pint, toss in about 3-4 ounces of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of liquid soap. Mix well.
Bathe the dog with this mixture, then rinse. Follow with a bath using ordinary shampoo. Smell all gone!
NOTE: The measurements don't have to be exact. The first time I needed it, I couldn't find the 'recipe'. I just dumped one and a half bottles of peroxide into a large bowl, tossed in several handfuls of baking soda, and gave a strong squirt of dish soap; it worked like a charm.
WARNING: Do NOT make this ahead of time and store; it'll explode your container. Just keep the ingredients handy.
My pleasure. I was so jealous of everyone who was there. :-)
Thanks for the skunk remedy! I'll see if there's some way to get it to Jared. *g*
It also works on people, horses and cats. ; )
(don't ask......)
That solution is a life saver. Had a dog that just never learned to leave the skunks alone. Just be careful because it does have a tendency to bleach things out.
Oh, but now you've whetted my curiosity! *g* That must be quite a tale.
Had a dog that just never learned to leave the skunks alone.
Ditto. She couldn't understand why they didn't want to play!
Just be careful because it does have a tendency to bleach things out.
Hadn't thought of that; the dog I used it on was a blonde. But if it bleached the whole garment - or animal - I wouldn't care, as long as the smell was gone!
Well, we had a cat that just couldn't understand why the outdoor furries wouldn't play with him..........even tho he was almost 12 years old. Knucklehead cat never did learn. Oh and he started out as a black cat. He was pale orange by the time his arthritis got bad enough to keep him inside permanently.
The horses and people part came from when I worked at the NY Ren faire and acquired a stinky protector. I swear that skunk thought he was my knight in shining armour never mind that I already had four of them. Anytime anyone came near me he's come rushing out of the woods opposite the stable and stand there stamping and growling. That also included the horses. We wound up buying several cases of peroxide and baking soda that year. Finally had to call the park ranger to come collect the little bugger.
Good heavens! Only for you? That's just weird -- but, dang, there should be a fanfic somewhere in there.
I was once held at bay by a baby skunk. The story is here.
Back to the Future?!?...(WARNING: SPOILERS!)
Date: 2008-10-08 04:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] feldspar2.livejournal.com
...not only did SPN kick serious ratings ass, it was a stunner of an episode to boot! Thanks, Tina!
As Charlton Heston said in "The Ten Commandments," this is the 'binding tie'...so many questions were seamlessly, beautifully, and tragically answered in "In The Beginning." This ep is one of the show's finest, especially since it deals with one of the most difficult subjects for any writer to pull off--time travel/past/future/can destiny be changed? Jeremy, take a bow, because you truly rocked it. And Misha, I adore you more and more...Castiel sitting on Dean's bed (hm, plot bunny there?) That TAB (yech) ad on the bench should have tipped me off right there than Dean was in the past, and the diner's weekly special cost less than 2 bucks (dang, those were the good old days). By then I was making these ridiculous screamy little noises with both hands over my mouth. John? JOHN??? (If I'd been watching at your place, Spook, you would have tossed me out on my ass!) Their meeting Lady M was beautiful and funny--these guys have just(?)met and they're bonding over a car, a universal masculine language--and somehow, on some level, John trusts, and somehow knows, this man who has come out of nowhere. Lovely.
Mary was so cute in her feathered hair and 70's bells--I wanted to laugh and cry while Dean watched his folks-to-be holding hands over milkshakes; the 'I'm going to Hell. Again.' line was a hoot. And Mary being a hunter?? I literally gasped--Dean got beat by a girl--AGAIN--and it's his Mom!! Did we fall down the freaking rabbit hole or what?
Mitch Pileggi was INCREDIBLE. It was fascinating how he inhabited Grandpa Campbell, how his physical movements mirrored Dean's (I loved how Dean was kinda showing off his hunter's skills and knowledge to impress him), and how he slowly seemed to approve of Dean (as a better catch for Mary? Grandpa, don't go there).
Dean's farewell scene with Mary is so wrenching because Dean has to show his 'game face' to her even while the rug is literally yanked out from under him--he learns that Mary really did not want a hunter's life for her children, and that marrying John was her way out--he'd served his time in 'Nam and done enough killing. It was Jensen's finest moment when Dean asks Mary not to leave her bed that night in the future, because I think part of him knows she will--no mother would ignore her intuition that her child needs her. It was so heartbreaking that he is trying so desperately to save his family, and that he'll defy Castiel to do it.
The rest of the ep slams into high, terrible gear--I shivered when GrandpaYED actually sniffed Dean--I don't know how Mitch channeled both Jeffrey and Fred, but he was spot on. The 'deal kiss' made me recoil even tho I knew it was the YED, not Mary's father, and I understand why she made the bargain, even while she was a hunter--John was dead, she loved him, and 10 years seemed a long time off. My heart just broke as Dean arrived too late--as we all knew he would--to stop it. And that Castiel's 'you have to stop it' wasn't about this.
Sidebar: part of me wanted to holler to Kripke: "Damnit, you're doing it again! No character development!" At the start of "ITB," Ruby2 shows up, in a pretty bitchin' car, to chauffeur Sam to an unknown destination. Wasn't this the same Ruby2 who, when she found out Castiel had yanked Dean out of Hell, split? But here she is, back in the fray, with no explanation whatsoever, and it doesn't look like Sam has forced her to reappear. Wouldn't that say something for Ruby2's courage if she chooses to help Sam at this point? Just saying...
But this is my only disagreement. I missed Jared at first but this ep used his absence in a compelling way, and I can't wait for tomorrow.
Bravo, "ITB"--well done!
WOW! That was an awesome review! I think you should be working for TV Guide.com, too! :-)
Very well said, and I totally agree with everything you pointed out. Especially about Mitch. He was fantastic! And Jensen - another amazing performance. A lot was resting on his shoulders, without Jared there to take up part of the work. Poor boy must be exhausted with how much Dean's been featured in these first three episodes!
But yeah, kudos to all the actors in this episode and to Jeremy for a great script. It was great to get some answers!
And now onward to tonight's episode and the inevitable showdown between Dean and Sam when Dean finds out what his brother's been up to. Yikes!
LOL! I think when I comment, I always end up in the same spot--but this last time, I ended up in a completely different spot and thought it was new pictures. (This time too! I usually end up beside the picture of J & J cheek to cheek, but this time it's scruffy Australian Jensen, and sweaty car mechanic Jared. (whew. Is it hot in here?))
New ones always sound good though! :)
Not sure I enjoyed the anvil of doom we got tonight as much as the rest of the season. It will be interesting to see what Bettina (and the rest of the fandom) think. Maybe upon re-viewing, I'll like it more.
