May 4, 2006: Devil's Trap (Season Finale)

First Impression: I wish I had something really clever to say right now, but honestly, I got nothing. My usual routine is to write notes as I watch the episode. No lie, there were several times that I was so engrossed in the action I forgot to type. So my first thought was just to write: I love Supernatural and be done with it. Seriously. I don't think I could do "Devil's Trap" justice. There was just too much demon-busting goodness. I don't even know where to begin. Oh, I know: with the "previouslies."

The Road So Far: Another recap, another classic rock tune. This time it was set to Triumph's (not the insult comic dog) "Fight the Good Fight," a title that kinda reminds me of the show Angel but works just fine for Supernatural. Didn't quite give me the same revved up feeling that last week's "Carry on my Wayward Son" did, but I tried to focus on the lyrics as we saw a mini-music video of what went down during "Salvation."

The Brothers: "Devil's Trap" showed me why these two brothers are such a good team. When one's wanting to rush head first into danger, the other wants to pull back, take a breath, come up with a plan. The two often had opposing views: For the lightning rod of fury known as Dean Winchester, it was all about saving Dad. For the more focused on their overall goal Sam Winchester, it was all about getting THE DEMON. But somehow it all worked. They were able to don firefighter uniforms and rescue Dad. Sure, they didn't know he was possessed at the time, but well, details. Later, Sam had to choose who to trust: Dad or Dean. Loved that he chose Dean.

Dad: Does Big Daddy Winchester get on everybody's bad side at one time or another? It always seems like he has a falling out with his supposed allies (meaning Bobby). What's up with that? And even at the end he's still preaching the bad word of killing THE DEMON over his family. Boo.

The Bad Guys: Meg and that other scruffy possessed guy — gone. Meg's exorcism had me feeling bad for her. But not for too long. I'm glad she's d-e-a-d (or at least we think she is. I don't trust this show, she could pop back in anytime). Dean using one of the precious bullets from the demon-killing Colt took care of Meg's other half.

The "Uh Uh! Oh No! Shut Up!" moments: 1) Dean hitting Meg. Wow. The anger on Dean was so palpable, I thought his head was going to explode. He was so ripe for demonic possession, but thankfully that didn't happen; 2) Meg and that other possessed guy being THE DEMON's daughter and son? I didn't see that coming. And now that evil thing knows that Dean got rid of both of them, he's a marked man. For life. THE DEMON is going to have it out for Dean; 3) Finding out it has plans for Sam and all the kids that are like him, wasn't a surprise, but I'm glad we got confirmation. That's after we found out that Sam was going to ask Jessica to marry him; 4) Of course, the truck ramming into the Winchesters. John, Sam and Dean were already beaten to all hell. Was that their friend Bobby driving the truck that rammed into the Impala? That awesome car? While the crash smacked of last year's Alias season ender, it was quite the awesome cliffhanger that just begs for the CW network to renew the show (So do it already!). Supernatural cannot end like this. It just can't.

The angst: My head was about ready to explode (in a good way) every time Sam and Dean's issues got the better of them. Sam had the same agenda as Dad while Dean put family first over revenge. And Dean got the emotional beating of his life, didn't he? Demons were able to attack his weaknesses but good. You remember shapeshifter Dean in "Skin?" Well, the angry Dean in "Devil's Trap" made his shapeshifter version look like Gahndi. Sheer determination colored Sam's every move — he stayed strong, but was able to realize when his brother had his back (I loved how Sam didn't let Dean joke his way out of thanking him for saving his life). Yup, Eric Kripke brought the angst and I was happy.

The chick flick moment that really wasn't: Dean let himself feel the effects of being responsible for ending two human lives. He did the un-Dean thing and opened up to Sam and John overheard. He finally gave his son props for putting the family first. This was a huge chick flick moment, one that Dean of course couldn't trust. And he was right. Dad was possessed. Psyche. Back to the action. I'm so glad Dean knew it wasn't his pops right away, though.

I'm going on way (way) too long so let me just say that this episode rocked. Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Jeffery Dean Morgan did an amazing job. Where does Jensen channel all that anger from? Inquiring minds want to know. Kripke and crew gave us one rollercoaster ride of a season. Here's to thinking good thoughts about a second-season renewal. And finally, a little plug for the folks at my day job. TV Guide Channel's Madison Michele recently interviewed Mr. Morgan; she caught up with him and his dog Bisou at a park where they talked about this show, Grey’s Anatomy and Weeds among other things. Anyway, he talks about the Grey's Anatomy season finale on The 411 at 8pm on Thursday, May 11th. I will say that he seemed optimistic about Supernatural returning, but I guess we'll all have to wait a couple weeks to find out.

Top 10 Lines (in no particular order):

"Gotcha."

"You guys think you invented lying to the cops? I'll figure out something."

"After everything I've heard about you Winchesters, I gotta tell you I'm underwhelmed."

"Killing that guy, killing Meg? I didn't even hesitate, I didn't even flinch. For you or Dad, the things I'm willing to do or kill, it scares me sometimes."

"This sucks out loud."

"You're the one that dragged me back into this Dean, I'm just trying to finish it."

"Boy, you and Dad are more alike than I thought, you know that? You both can't wait to sacrifice yourselves for this thing. But you know what? I'm going to be the one to bury you. You're selfish you know that? You don't care about anything but revenge."

"Here, make the gun float to you there, psychic boy."

"You're not my Dad."

"Funny! But's all part of your M-O isn't it? Mask all that nasty pain. Mask the truth." "Oh yeah, what's that?" "You know you fight and you fight for this family but the truth is, they don't need you. Not like you need them. Sam, he's clearly John's favorite. Even when they fight, that's more concern than he's ever shown you."

And I actually heard the day before by an offical Fox release that Dark Angel was picked up for another season. And then the offical line up was announced and Jensen was out of a job again.

Hi there, glad you like my LJ! As for how I get all of my information, it’s just a lot of research, finding websites, using Google by putting in Jensen’s name or Supernatural, checking IMDB.com, etc. And join different SPN LJ communities – they’re a font of information, too. Good luck!
