So I subbed again last night for my company's softball team, and I am proud to say that I caused TOTAL MAYHEM. Ha!
Now I'm left-handed, so I usually pull the ball to the right when I'm up at bat. But last night for some reason, the first time I was up, I popped one up to the left, headed for the third baseman. It looked like an easy out, but the first rule in softball is - never stop running because you never know what can happen.
And it's a good thing I didn't, because for some reason, the pitcher took off at a dead run to catch the ball and plowed right into the third baseman, knocking them both to the ground. Ha! My team started laughing at me, calling, "Whoo, Barb! Way to take out their pitcher!" LOL! Then we were kidding with the other team, because they were all ER doctors from our local hospital, telling them they could just patch themselves up. :-)
Then the next time I was up, we had one out and I get a single, the only one on base. Our next batter strikes out. Now I knew we had two outs, so you just run like hell no matter what when the batter makes contact. Our next batter makes contact and it's a grounder to the short stop. He bobbles the ball and is unable to even throw it before our guy makes it to first.
Here's where I made my mistake - that ended up making us WIN the game.
I was supposed to keep running, past second, but when I saw the shortstop didn't throw the ball I stopped at second, knowing I'd be out by a mile if I tried to get to third and it would be our last out of the inning. Our third base coach is yelling at me, telling me I was supposed to keep running, and I just shrugged my shoulders, knowing I'd made the right call.
Our next batter makes contact, another grounder that's going to go between second and third base. I take off running and see the short stop and the third baseman collide and knock each other to the ground - right in the base path, right in my way, the ball on the ground next to the short stop.
I jump over the third baseman just as the short stop picks up the ball and turns to try and tag me. I twist my body and he completely misses me. Only problem is, after jumping and twisting I've got too much forward momentum to stop. My left foot touches third base, but I can't stop myself and I run off the base, smack into our third base coach, who stops me.
Now I'm fair game at that point. You can only over run first base. All the short stop, (who was now standing, holding the ball) had to do was turn and tag me and I'd be out. Everyone's yelling, I'm trying to untangle myself from the third base coach, as he's trying to push me backwards toward the base.
Well instead of paying attention, the short stop decides to throw a temper tantrum like a five year old! He's pissed that he messed up two plays in a row, and in a fit, slams down both his glove and the ball into the dirt! I hop back onto third base and I'm safe! LOL!
Now the bases are loaded and our next batter smashes one that clears the bases, bringing in four runs.
Those were the last four runs we scored during the game, and we ended up winning 7-4. So without me messing up and stopping at second base, we never would've won the game! LOL!
So yeah, I caused chaos and mayhem and it was awesome. :-)
They've already asked me to play next week and it's the start of the playoffs and we're in second place. Wish us luck!
