Wow.
Just....wow.
I'm still at a loss for words over last night's season finale, so thankfully Tina Charles over at TV Guide's website isn't. :-) Her watercooler review of No Rest for the Wicked is behind the cut.
I'm sad to say that this will be Tina's final watercooler review for Supernatural, which is a damn shame. She's such a fangirl and I've loved her reviews for these past few years.
My own thoughts are at the end.
Episode Recap of Season 3 Finale: "No Rest for the Wicked"
I don’t know about you but I’m going to be thinking about that last shot the entire summer. I feel like I read an Eric Kripke interview where he said we weren’t going to see hell. But we got a glimpse of it. Oh my. Everyone was wondering whether Dean was going to actually die and go to hell. He did. I really felt that this season had to end this way. And poor Sammy – he was going to do anything he could to save his brother. Unfortunately, Dean didn’t let him. And speaking of Sam, Lilith couldn’t kill him. Have you wrapped your minds around that one yet? She couldn’t kill him. What does that mean? Just how powerful is Sammy? I had a feeling he was powerful, but Lilith’s mojo didn’t work on him. That kinda scares me for next season. The only thing I really wanted to see in this finale, but didn’t get was Sammy going dark side. But hmm…I guess we can look forward to that in Season 4, right?
I still have to process this finale so I’m not sure it outdid "Devil’s Trap," but it came close. This episode was creepy and suspenseful and funny and sad and just plain awesome. The brotherly moments were plentiful; it was a great way to close out what was such a weird season for so many reasons. The main reason being it was shortened by the writers’ strike. I did find "No Rest for the Wicked" difficult to watch at times. Here’s why:
• Stubborn Dean Winchester: I know it was his life on the line, but when Dean wouldn’t cave into Sam and Ruby, I just wanted to scream at him. I know he had good reasons, but I just wanted him to let his brother handle things. If Sam could use his abilities for something good, to save him, he should have let him. I get why he was so apprehensive about it, but I still wanted him to trust Sam to do his job and save Dean. Plus, the way he talked to Ruby and ended up punching her first, that was hard to watch. So was Ruby kicking Dean’s ass.
• Dean Winchester on the run: I always think of Dean as confronting everything head on. But in the beginning of "No Rest" – I know it was a dream – but watching him run from the hellhounds was just scary. To know he was scared enough to run was so sad.
• Dean’s death: I know I’m harping on Dean right now, but bear with me. Watching those hellhounds tear at him – that was beyond disturbing. To see one of the lead characters ripped to shreds like that is not something you see every week. To top it all off seeing him all tethered in hell ended things on the scariest possible note.
Let’s get to Sam. First of all, Jared Padalecki totally stepped up to the plate and knocked one out of the park with his performance. The pain was so evident on his face after he lost his brother. I really thought at that moment his eyes were going to turn black, his smile would transition into a sexy smirk and evil Sam would be back. It didn’t happen, but I’m still holding out hope for whenever the show returns.
Awesome Moments:
• There was Lilith’s “shore leave” with her new “family.” It was a different little girl playing her this time, but the results were still as creepy. I felt like I was watching an episode of the Twilight Zone. And that’s a huge complement. And later, as Ruby, she kissed Sam. After all, Lilith’s a destroyer of children and seducer of men. Wonder what’s going to happen between Lilith and Sam in Season 4.
• "Carry on Wayward Son" made a comeback – loved that they once again set the recap to what’s probably the show’s unofficial theme song. Every season finale should kick off with that song.
• And speaking of music: OMG. The Bon Jovi portion of the show was totally unexpected and totally rocked! I really wanted Sam to sing along with Dean and he did. That was just hilarious in so many ways, truly one of those scenes that instantly became a classic. However, that look on Dean’s face when he stopped singing "Wanted Dead or Alive" was crushing.
• Bobby supporting the boys was a thing of beauty, especially when he didn’t let the Winchesters go to Indiana on their own.
• Bobby rigging the sprinklers to spray holy water was inspired.
• How sad was it when Bobby got Dean to reveal he was having hallucinations. Sam seemed surprised by that. And the progression of it was scary. He saw Sam’s face turn hellhound like "Crossroad Blues." A few hours before deal time, and Dean could spot demons like the cop, or the neighbors. A few minutes before and he could even tell Ruby wasn’t really Ruby.
• Ruby called Sam out on his insecurities. He didn’t want to be different and he knew when Dean looked at him like he was a freak. I wish he had defied Dean and tried to tap into his abilities anyway. It’s funny how Sam never listened to BDW, but in the end, he listened to Dean.
• Jensen Ackles was nine kinds of awesome in this episode as well. From acting out Dean’s stubborn ways, his inappropriate humor, those crushing looks of despair and doom and Dean's death – the man can play it all.
Other thoughts:
• Where was Bobby while Sam and Dean were facing Ruby/Lilith?
• So glad to see that the Colt was gone for good (well, for now) and the boys had to rely on Ruby’s killer knife. I love that knife.
• The demon cop thought Dean’s last name was Hagar. As in Sammy "I Can’t Drive 55" Hagar…love it. (And oh yeah, he fronted Van Halen for a while too.)
• What did you think about Dean leaving Ruby stuck under that Devil’s Trap?
• Of course Dean would ask Sam to take care of his wheels.
• Sam almost had to kill a little girl. So glad he didn’t have to go through with it.
• Ruby/Lilith told Sam that it would take time to go all dark side. I wanted him to not listen to her and try anyway. After all, demons lie. I know, earlier Ruby said she never lies to Sam, but Sam has his own mind. I think he would’ve or at least should have tried.
• Part of me wanted Dean not to just scream "Sam" at the end, but "Sammy." That would have ripped my heart out even more.
•There were elements of "Devil’s Trap," "Salvation," "Crossroad Blues" and "Mystery Spot" in this episode.
• There were definite moments between the brothers but unfortunately no hug or "no love ya, bro" or anything like that. That's so not the Winchesters. Fortunately, Sam and Dean show they care in other ways.
• At what point did Lilith take over Ruby?
OK, this is going on way too long once again, so I’m going to continue with the favorite lines in the first post. I wanted to also tell you guys that after three seasons, this is my final column as the Supernatural blogger. I’m hanging up my keyboard and I’m going to become a civilian Supernatural fan once again. I just wanted to say I loved every second of writing this blog. You guys are the best posters – I’ve loved reading everyone’s wild theories, reports from conventions, and of course, your in depth analysis of each episode. Thanks for the good times and don’t worry, I’ll still be watching our show. Once again, congrats to Supernatural on getting the early nod on a Season 4. Looking forward to seeing how Dean gets out of hell, whether Sam is going to realize his full potential and how in the world Mary Winchester fits into all of this. So what did you think of "No Rest for the Wicked?" What did you think of Season 3?
~~~~~~
Ok, and now here's what I thought!
As usual, Tina did a good job of summing up my own feelings on the episode, so there's just a few things I wanted to talk about.
Let's jump right to the end of the episode, but it's not about Sam or Dean. It's about Ruby. Or Lilith.
Now my friend
charityflint and I watch the episodes together, but she had to be in Florida this week, so we called each other on the commercial breaks and talked fast and furious. :-) When it got toward the end there, and Lilith was no longer in the child's body, Charity posed that she had jumped into Ruby. Then that got me thinking about what Eric had said at the LA con, that sorry to all you Ruby-haters (and yeah, that'd be me!) but Ruby was sticking around. So then I said that since Ruby is now truly a useless character, Eric is going to justify her sticking around by turning her into the bad guy.
Then bam! Charity was right and Lilith was in Ruby and then I thought I was also right. But no! And damn, I didn't see this coming, but after Lilith is unable to kill Sam, she leaves the body that she'd been inhabiting.
And here's the thing I want to ask your opinions on - do you think that the body is dead? The way she fell to the floor looked that way to me. PLEASE tell me that Katie Cassidy is off the show, too!! My god, to have gotten rid of BOTH Ruby and Bela will make my YEAR!
I mean, I never had anything against a female demon character this year (after all, I loved Meg) but Katie is SUCH a horrible actress I couldn't watch any scenes that she was in. And after she became Lilith she got even worse!
And playing by the rules Eric has already laid down, via Meg especially, that body shouldn't be able to live, because didn't Bobby shoot Ruby in the chest? Just like Meg had fallen seven stories and also gotten shot, only the demon inside was keeping her alive. And really, without a demon possessing the body (since Lilith sent Ruby back to hell) what do we need Katie anymore for?
I know I've said terrible things about you this year, Eric, but you halfway redeemed yourself by dumping Bela, and if you've also done the same with Ruby, all will be forgiven and I will look forward to season four with a vengeance! :-)
~~~~~
So yesterday I made a post, asking for all of your speculations on what you thought was going to happen last night. The majority of us thought that Dean was indeed going to go to Hell, even though we didn't want it to happen. And I said that I only want Dean to go to Hell if we get to SEE Hell. We've heard about it enough and even had John go there, but haven't experienced it through the eyes of one of the characters. I didn't want Dean to go to Hell and get rescued by Sam and then have it be like in IMToD where Dean wakes up and remembers nothing. That will make this entire season utterly pointless.
Well good goddamn if we didn't get to actually SEE Hell! Score!! Even though that was a horrible, horrible scene to leave us with, I'm glad I got my wish.
Another thing you guys were speculating on was the reemergence of Sam's powers. While I've never been against Sam's abilities, it was the only thing I had an issue with and that I really hoped didn't happen. I only didn't want it to happen because there has been NO sign for so, so long now that Sam still has any powers. If we'd been given little glimpses this season that Sam was starting to come back on line, then I'd think it would be fantastic if he finally bursts out to save Dean. But now? All of a sudden? Too contrived a plot device for me.
I was ready to tear my hair out as the episode was progressing, with Ruby trying to get Sam to give in and unlock his abilities and I thought for sure Eric was going to go down that line and I was ticked.
But wow, another surprise! He didn't do it! And I really, really liked how it was handled instead. We got what I wanted - glimpses that Sam is still a special kid. Ruby told him and then Lilith was unable to kill him. To me, that worked out perfectly, a great setup for going into next season, with Sam most likely going to try and let his abilities out to save Dean.
~~~~
I thought this episode was fantastic, from beginning to end. Even with Ruby in it. ESPECIALLY because Dean FINALLY got the best of her, getting into that fight and coming up with the knife.
The singing in the car made me squeal SO LOUD that I scared my husband and both our cats. LOL! I've been a Bon Jovi fan since the band first came around, so to have that in SPN was simply amazing. I was laughing and laughing at the singing, but then it turned so sad, with Dean's face, looking so lost and broken. [sniff]
When Dean had the hallucination with Sam that creeped me the hell out! Yikes!
So...um, where the heck do you think Bobby was at the end there? You guys don't think anything happened to him while he was outside, do you??
I was SO hoping for at least Sam to say "I love you" to Dean, but like Tina said in her review, that's just not the Winchester way. :-)
Ok, I could ramble on about this episode forever, so I'd better stop. :-) Just kudos to both Jensen and Jared for knocking this one out of the park. It was funny and sad and disturbing and left us with a cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers. Thank you GOD we already know that it's coming back next year, because the summer's gonna be long enough as it is!
Just....wow.
I'm still at a loss for words over last night's season finale, so thankfully Tina Charles over at TV Guide's website isn't. :-) Her watercooler review of No Rest for the Wicked is behind the cut.
I'm sad to say that this will be Tina's final watercooler review for Supernatural, which is a damn shame. She's such a fangirl and I've loved her reviews for these past few years.
Date: 2008-05-16 12:13 pm (UTC)I am miffed at the CW though. They showed the end of the ep in their trailers. Now granted I am a spoiler whore but I tried to keep my spoiling for this ep to a minimum, especially the ending. Then the CW just goes and blows that all to hell. Sorry, bad pun.
I couldn't watch the Hellhounds tearing Dean apart.
Man, I've watched the finale twice now and that scene still doesn't get any easier to watch.
I closed my eyes and unsuccessfully fought back the tears
When Sam started to cry and his tears fell on Dean's face I couldn't help but tear up as well. [sniff] Our poor boys!
I had a hard time watching the very end too with Dean all stretched out like that especially when I saw the hooks in his skin.
As horrible and painful that scene was, I was glad it was there. Because the one thing I wanted to see was Hell. It's been talked about for years on the show, but we've never experienced it through one of the character's eyes. So I have to give kudos to Eric for including that last scene that's still imprinted vividly in my head.
They showed the end of the ep in their trailers.
I know! They did the same thing with All Hell Breaks Loose when Sam gets stabbed! That's very poor judgement on CW's part when putting those previews together.
When Buffy died on her show, I didn't honestly care all that much, yeah it was sad, but this? *sobs*
I know! Seeing one of your favorite characters ripped to shreds is horrifying! And I just can't, for the life of me, figure out how Sam is going to save Dean. [sob]
Date: 2008-05-19 03:38 pm (UTC)Oh, great review! I totally forgot to mention the Car 54 thing in mine. :-)
I was unbelievably pleased with the writing and the plot and the glimpse of Hell
Me, too! You know how disgusted I've been with this entire season, but Kripke finally, finally got it right.
And wow, Jared and Jensen were just mindblowing!
That must've been the hardest episode all season for them to film.
And Ruby SO MUST BE DEAD!!! She's gotta be!
She has GOT to be. I mean, the body fell down with mouth and eyes wide open, plus she was SHOT by Bobby.
That was the biggest stunner of them all, since Kripke said Ruby was going to be around next season. But hey as long as she's not played by Katie I'll give the new person a chance.
Can you believe we got rid of BOTH Lauren AND Katie?? Party time!!
Date: 2008-05-19 04:36 pm (UTC)With the gunshot to the chest from Bobby, she has GOT to be. I'm just so totally stunned that we got both Katie AND Lauren dumped. Party time!
A guy this time, a male actor playing Ruby
Oooh, I'd love it if it was a guy!
(no subject)
Date: 2008-05-16 05:04 pm (UTC)Then again, Kripke is an evil, magnificent bastard.
The singing scene was so funny, sweet, and sad. Oh, Dean! You are the best big brother ever, distracting Sammy from your eminent doom.
Date: 2008-05-19 04:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, that's the general consensus now that I've asked and I'm so totally freaking thrilled to have gotten rid of both Ruby AND Bela. Woot!
Which would work out great because I would love to see someone else play Ruby.
Me, too. I had nothing against the concept of a demon interacting off and on throughout the season with Sam and Dean, but Katie just did not have the acting chops to pull it off. I'll be interesting to see what does happen to the Ruby demon now that it needs a new body. And needs to crawl back out of Hell first!
Then again, Kripke is an evil, magnificent bastard.
And for the first time all season long I'll agree with you! :-)
You are the best big brother ever, distracting Sammy from your eminent doom.
God, that scene makes me both laugh and cry and only good acting can pull that off.
(no subject)
Date: 2008-05-17 08:22 pm (UTC)I'm still trying to prosess the episode in my head, as I only watched it today.
I loved the Bon Jovi scene, especially when Sam started singing with Dean because I didn't think he would. And the fight between Dean and Ruby was good, I was scared that she would get the better of him but Dean is a lot smarter than her.
All that I can think about though is that ending. Even though I thought Dean would go to Hell it was so hard to watch. I didn't think we'd actually see him get ripped up and it was terrifing and my heart broke seeing him in Hell calling for Sam.
I totally think Ruby is dead and gone. What with Bobby shooting her and it seems that Lilith did something to her to get in her body. Did you see the way she moved her neck?
I hope Bobby is okay, he's a total gift to Supernatural. Maybe he was busy downstairs with the demons or maybe he thought he'd leave the brothers alone for their last moments together.
This episode has left me with an ache inside. I hope September comes along quickly!
Date: 2008-05-19 04:53 pm (UTC)Aww, thanks! I only hope the person taking over for Tina next year is as good as she was.
especially when Sam started singing with Dean because I didn't think he would
I didn't think he would, either! And then he really got into it!
I was scared that she would get the better of him but Dean is a lot smarter than her.
Yes! And it's about time that Dean got the upper hand over her.
I didn't think we'd actually see him get ripped up and it was terrifing
Oh god, I know. Since we never did see what happened to the bodies of the other hellhound victims, it was absolutely horrifying to see it happening to Dean.
and my heart broke seeing him in Hell calling for Sam.
That was so awful! But at the same time, kudos to Kripke for actually showing us Hell, as painful as it was to watch it. How in the world is Sam going to save Dean??
I totally think Ruby is dead and gone
Yep, that's the general consensus here and I couldn't be more thrilled. :-) I find it hard to believe that both Ruby AND Bela are gone!
I hope Bobby is okay, he's a total gift to Supernatural.
He is! Last we saw of him he was across the street in that house. And Sam is really gonna need his help next season, so Bobby's got to be okay!
I hope September comes along quickly!
I couldn't agree more! :-)
Farewell, Tina, I'll miss you...
Date: 2008-05-20 12:11 am (UTC)Jensen was incredible, playing Dean's fear as the clock winds down, yet he was still as stubborn as ever, refusing to let Sam save him if it's risking his own life. Loved how he acknowledged that Sam is his 'weak spot,' and Dean's his. Kim gave us plenty of brotherly moments to savor over the summer. Jim was his usual magnificent self, and Bobby's turning the sprinklers to holy water was BRILLIANT.
As for Katie Cassidy...well, like I've said before, an actor can't do much with a badly conceived character, and it seems like, as with Lauren Cohen, their characters were expanded and slightly improved, but again, it was too little too late. I found it intriguing that in "Jus In Bello," Ruby turns out to be right, and the guys were wrong. If the writers had sprinkled clues like this along the way, instead of frustrating everybody with the is she/isn't she trustworthy riff, I could have gotten into Ruby more (oh, behave, you know what I mean)and Katie would have had more to play. I've noticed that some LJers have called Dean's behavior toward Ruby misogynistic, and on one hand I can see their point, because he wasn't like this toward Meg. But Dean was not on the clock when he met Meg, and there was no either/or conflict about Meg; she was out to smoke the Winchesters, and that was that. But I think that Dean forced Ruby into the fight to get the knife and get her under the Devil's Trap. (and I really want to know how she got out...)
Ah, the "Bon Jovi" moment! I squeed so loud I'm still surprised somebody didn't call the cops. I laughed and cried and sang along, really, really badly; it was our boys spitting in the face of Death, yeehaw! And Dean's look at the end is devastating.
I wonder how old Lilith is. Does she possess children because it's easier, or because most people let down their guard around children? It was kind of squicky when she kissed Sam, tho it wasn't a deep kiss. For that matter, do all the demons have genders, are they androgynous, or, heck, are they bi? Just askin'.
When the clock struck, even tho I was ready for Dean to go to Hell, I just went 'no,no....' Sam's tears and Dean's last words just tore me up. And Dean's dilated pupils, ohGod. And the last shot...it looks to me like the inside of a human brain, with nerves crisscrossing and thoughts traveling like electrical sparks. Maybe it's Dean's version of Hell--which is being separated from Sam. The blood in Dean's mouth, the hooks in his skin...I just started crying again.
Well. Sam has to save Dean, even if he has to go to Hell itself, or go darkside to do it. I'm suspecting that he might try to summon Ruby back into her host body, but I sure hope I'm wrong on this one.
Is it September yet?
Hell, is it August--I need my DVDs!!!
