It's time for a Supernatural party!
May. 1st, 2008 07:36 amToday is going to be a GOOD day. Look, even Jensen and Jared are smiling!

And why is it going to be a good day? Well first, Supernatural is on tonight! Woot! And from the sound of the description, it promises to be a great one. :-)
Not only is SPN on tonight, but I'm having a viewing party at my house. Yay! I'm having
asyouleft,
adelheide,
researchgrrl and
samazon13 over for pizza and the Winchester boys. :-) I was bummed because the other half of my brain,
charityflint, wasn't going to be able to make it, due to work committments. We haven't seen each other in weeks and I was really looking forward to her coming over. But then I got a phone call this morning from her - the meeting got canceled! She's coming over! Squee!
So yeah, it's a good day and I'm determined not to let anything at work today ruin it. Nope, not gonna. :-)
Still speaking of Supernatural, I finally had a chance to read the first issue of the new comic, Rising Son, the other day. I was surprised, when I went to my comic book store, to see that the artwork that was posted everywhere...

...Wasn't actually the true cover of the comic, but the variant cover instead. I got lucky and my shop had one variant left, so I picked it up, as I didn't care for the artwork at all on the real cover.
Ok, first off, thank you GOD that they switched artists from Origins. Sam, Dean and John are no longer brown, faceless blobs. But why do they continue to draw Dean with blonde hair?? Argh!
Anyway, based on the variant cover, with Sam and Dean drawn much older now than they were in Origins, holding a knife and a shot gun, I thought that it meant that in this series of comics, we would see Dean at least, starting to be trained by John.
But instead we've just got the boys sitting in the back of the Impala or in the hotel room, fighting about grilled cheese sandwiches. I know this is only the first issue of the series, so I'm holding out hope the boys have a more active role in later issues.
But this one is all about John. I did like his journal entries about the boys and about Mary and thinking about what would happen to Sam and Dean if something happened to him. We see him doing the best he can, trying to hunt and save people and trying to hold down a job and provide for his sons at the same time.
Kudos to the author this time around tying the comic into the TV show cannon correctly instead of his blunder with the Impala in Origins. We find out that John knew people in Mary's life were going missing, just like Ruby told Sam.
But why? And what does it mean? John comes close to finding out, from Mary's cousin, Eddie, but he's killed before he can tell John. Makes me wonder if John ever DID find out, sometime later, and for some reason never told his sons. We know John was a man who kept secrets, and this could be one of them, left up to Sam and Dean to discover on their own.
Boy, John was a one-man carnage machine, wasn't he? Taking out all those succubi? Yikes! Talk about a bloodbath! You can see that John's come a long way from Origins and has now fully embraced the life of a hunter.
The end was quite interesting, eh? Just who was that woman who showed up, asking where SAM is? Definitely makes me eager for issue #2! Especially because I assumed the title, Rising Son, refered to Dean, that this series was going to be about John training him, bringing him into the world of the supernatural. Guess I was wrong!
Overall the comic wasn't bad. I most certainly rate it higher than Origins. What about you guys? Did you like it? Hate it?

I do like the double-entendre with the title, since it could also signify Sam
And it definitely seems like it might, what with how this issue ended.
Origins just left me with a bad taste in my mouth and a feeling I got robbed.
I totally agree. I couldn't wait for an SPN comic book and was supremely disappointed. I mean, canon meant nothing.

Yeahhh, that was pretty gruesome, wasn't it? I guess they're trying to appeal to those teenage boys who frequent the comic shops. :-)

Date: 2008-05-01 03:26 pm (UTC)I like it a lot so far, but I think John is really doing to discover something about Sam, and we'll get into the life of John-who-keeps-secrets.

Date: 2008-05-01 05:52 pm (UTC)I really am wondering if we're going to see John as a sympathetic character after this series of comics.
and we'll get into the life of John-who-keeps-secrets
Yeah, wow, if he finds out something about Sam this early on...man, he kept that secret for a long time.

Date: 2008-05-01 11:05 pm (UTC)I do like the canon of John knowing that people close to Mary were dying, but I really have to wonder if that means that he will uncover that Mary knew YED.

Date: 2008-05-06 01:26 am (UTC)I really wonder about how the various SPN Powers That Be want us to view John
Good question! Because we keep getting conflicting views of him. I mean, I really didn't like John when the show first got started, but then he won me over - just in time for him to be killed. D'oh!
but I really have to wonder if that means that he will uncover that Mary knew YED
Wow, if he knew that and didn't tell the boys, and they find out - it'll probably be a good thing that he's gone!

Date: 2008-05-01 05:24 pm (UTC)Nor do I think it makes a lick of sense that John knew any of this stuff about Sam or Mary. In Home, he's acting like he's just discovering it, he has to make sure he learns the truth before he can contact the boys, etc. Well if he was finding out large portions of it as early as this--why in the world did he suddenly take off? More importantly it's pretty clear in the show that Dean knew what John did all along, especially by the time he was being left home alone for days at a time when he was 9 years old.

Date: 2008-05-06 01:31 am (UTC)even in the comics they are apparently managing to make him an also-ran.
Yeah, I was really disappointed that the son in Rising Son wasn't Dean, because I was so sure it was going to be!
In Home, he's acting like he's just discovering it, he has to make sure he learns the truth before he can contact the boys,
The only thing I can think of (and I'm pretty much grasping at straws!) is that here in the comics he only finds out about the stuff with Mary, and it's not till later, during season 1, that he finds out about Sam, and he wants to know the truth about Sam before going back to the boys. [shrugs]
More importantly it's pretty clear in the show that Dean knew what John did all along
Yeah, I definitely take issue with that, too. We know that Sam didn't, but Dean sure did. Seems like these comics still can't get everything right!
