Holy crap people! We just had an EARTHQUAKE! In freaking CHICAGO!

It happened about 4:30 am and it was so surreal that I was convinced that I was dreaming - that the bed was shaking and everything on my dresser was rattling and so were the pictures on my wall. But nope, it was totally real!

The quake started all the way down in southern Illinois, 230 miles from me and registered a 5.4 on the richter scale.

It's just so bizarre! This happens in California, not the midwest!

Wow, what a way to start off my morning. :-)

That's one thing I don't miss about CA is the the earthquakes. Scary stuff, man! But if you check out the fault lines, I'm pretty sure there's a major one that runs through the mid-west somewhere.

Yep, like mickeym said, it's the New Madrid. Last time we had one up here in Chicago that I remember was 21 years ago. I was 15 years old and again, I was in bed and it started shaking! California needs to keep these things! :-)

HA! I knew it! I woke up because the bed was shaking and I was like, ".. earthquake?" because y'know maybe I was wrong but apparently no! I was hoping some kind of alarm went off at some point for earthquake (like a tornado alarm) but then I realized no, lol. There was much dreaming panic over earthquake.

Nope, you were right, it was an earthquake! Man, that's really not the way I want to wake up, you know? :-) And yeah, why isn't there an alarm for earthquakes??

Last time the area shook that much was 1968. I remember it because we felt it as a tiny quiver in Tennessee.

There's an article on CNN about the quake. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/04/18/illinois.earthquake/index.html

Oh, thanks so much for the link! I remember back in 1987, I was 15 years old, and we had a tremor here. Not as big as this one, but it still shook my bed!

I was at a college fair (representing my uni) and I was talking to the rep from Oakton Community College. we were talking about where in the Chicagoland we live. I live in Burbank, IL. He joked about how it would be better to be in Burbank, CA. I said no, 'cuz they have wild fires and earthquakes.

Hmm...maybe next time I will say something about winning the lottery.

Yikes! That must have been a startling awakening!

We've had a couple little earthquakes on the East coast over the years, but nothing more than a mid-2, I think. (Although I'm told a major fault line runs right through the center of town, under the town green, which is kind of sunken.)

Is this something they're predicting will happen again? Or was it a once in a decade thing?

It totally was! And I really don't want to repeat it. :-)

Lucky you! A 5.4 isn't fun, and I'm just very thankful that we didn't have any damage because of it.

Is this something they're predicting will happen again? Or was it a once in a decade thing?

Last time a big one like this hit was 1968. But back in 1987 we had a pretty strong one that again, shook my bed. I haven't heard any predictions for another one anytime soon, thankfully!

We got it here too!

Everybody's talking about it, it's all over the radio. I'm sure the Californian's are laughing at us the way we laugh at them when they get three inches of snow and whole cities shut down. *LOL*

They are! My CA buddies told me that you have to pay big bucks to get that kind of shaking at an amusement park so I shouldn't complain! :-)
