Supernatural - a few thoughts on Provenance

Sometimes I think it's strange that if I'm having a bad day and want to relax and take my mind off of things that I immediately reach for my Supernatural DVDs. Strange because with all the creepiness and gruesome deaths most people would think it odd that it would be relaxing to watch. But it always works for me!

Case in point - I've been having a really rough couple of weeks and like to end the night by watching an episode, to forget about my troubles before heading to bed. So last night, snuggled under the covers and with a cat on either side of me, I watched Provenance.

There were a lot of humorous things in that ep, along with a few "awww" moments as well. Here are some of the highlights, at least for me:

• Jared's Texas drawl is never more evident than right at the beginning, in the bar, when he says to Dean, "Who are we today, Dean? Rock stars?" Listen to the way he says rock stars. Hee!

• Gotta love Dean sleeping in the Impala and Sam blowing the horn and laughing

• Cute touch with The Krip license plate

• Dean stuffing his face with mini quice and acting like a complete ass never fails to make me laugh

• I really liked Sarah Blake. There was an example of a beautiful, strong female character who was written well. Unlike the two useless bimbos we've got on the show now. But I digress...

• Disco motel - BEST EVER!! The funky music they played when the boys walked in was priceless, as was their "Huh." reaction. Loved it!

• Ah, the dinner scene that spawned 432 bloopers. *g*

• Dean looks HOT in that gray henley

• I absolutely love the music that's playing when the boys break into the auction house

• Who doesn't like Dean playing matchmaker with his "I lost my wallet" ruse to get Sam to see Sarah again? Smooth, Dean! As was your "I gotta go do something. Somewhere." Hee!

• Sam's "OH MY GOD!" outburst at seeing the painting again makes me LOL every single time

• I can't watch the scene of the boys getting into the car together without thinking of the "synchronized door closing" bit from the blooper reel, with Jensen's "Silence! We'll do it!" ROTFL!

• Here's one of those "aww" moments (and this coming from a die hard wincest-er, too) when Dean says "I think this Sarah girl could be good for you." Good job, big brother. :-)

• And another great line from Dean - "Sam? Marry that girl."

• What is going on with Sam's hair at the graveyard scene as they walk up to the crypt for the first time?? Yikes!

• And a good line from Sarah - "You guys seem to be uncomfortably comfortable with this." and Sam's reply - "Still think I'm a catch?" Ha!

• Dean with the matchmaking again, turning on the radio to have "Bad Time" come blasting out. Ha!

• "What kind of a house doesn't have salt? Low sodium freaks!"

• That ghost girl creeped me the hell out!

• "Burned the doll, destroyed the spirit, but don't thank me or anything." LOL! Oh, Dean!

• And a final one from Dean, watching Sam and Sarah - "That's my boy."

• In the original script pages for this episode, Sam actually slept with Sarah. Do you guys think it was a good thing or bad thing that they changed that?

So there you have it! A little run down of all the things I liked about Provenance!

I think it's better that they didn't because you don't have to meet someone, get along wonderfully, and fall directly into bed. Also, Sam never came off as the macking kind of guy. That would be Dean's department. So I think it was better without the sex because it would have seemed inconsistent.

But that's my thirteen cents on the matter...

Good observations. I also loved the part where he was trying to break into the (glass? in the crypt? sorry, it's been a while) and I'm all 'geez, Dean, use your gun' and then he's 'geez, Dean' or whatever the exact words were. Enjoyed that part, personally... seemed almost... interactive lol

Honestly, it wouldn't have bothered me if they'd slept together at the time. It almost made more sense than having him sleep with Maddison. However, if he'd slept with Sarah, the scene at the end of Heart wouldn't have had the same impact, for me, anyway, and that would have been a terrible shame. So yeah, in hindsight, I'm glad they changed it. :)

Good point. Because if Sam had been sleeping around prior to Heart, it wouldn't have been any big deal that he slept with Madison.

I'm glad they changed the script. It wouldn't fit with the way Sam's character has been developed, to have him having sex with her. Up to that point, he's been pretty actively grieving for Jess -- the one kiss with the preacher's daughter (whose name escapes me now) in Hookman made it obvious he felt guilty even thinking about it, and sure, Provenance was quite some months later, but I don't think he'd have been to the sleeping-with-someone-he-just-met point.

Even with Madison, a year after THAT, he let her make the first move.

Yeah, it might have been a bit too soon in the series for him to be jumping in the sack with someone. But I liked the kiss. It showed that he realized that he was going to have to move on, but not take things too fast yet.

I also love Sam complaining to Dean, "Ever since we got here you've been tryin' to pimp me out to Sarah!"

And Sam's gestures to Dean ('dude, wtf?' and 'cut it!')when he cranks the love song as Sam and Sarah are going into the house.

Sam's only independently quotable line - "What kind of house doesn't have salt? Low-sodium freaks." (Just a pet peeve of mine. Dean is very quotable. To get Sam's funny lines you have to quote almost the whole conversation, not easily adaptable as a sig line.)

And of course, my favorite, "Jared, check this out." Hee!

I wouldn't have minded Sam having sexing up Sarah. At least it would have shown some progress in him after his conversation with Dean where they talk about Jessica and Sam's feeling that anyone he loves is in danger. Also, he had much better chemistry with Sarah than Madison. If they really wanted to give us mostly naked Jared, they should have had the werewolves showing up in Sarah's city (I can't remember where she was, Boston?) And have Sarah be the one to have been mugged, find some guy who works at the auction house ripped apart, etc. THAT would have worked and the audience would totally understand Sam being just devastated by having to kill her.

Oh. My. GOD. That is freaking BRILLIANT!! I don't know too many people who disliked Sarah, so bringing her back for something like that would have been AMAZING. And god yeah, all of Sam's tears at the end would've had so much more impact. Geez, why wasn't that episode written like that???

Oooh....now a fanfic story on the other hand with something along those lines...Hmmm... *bg*

I can't find it now, but I am pretty sure it was at the Asylum Con that someone asked Jensen about it and he laughed and said he couldn't believe it got through. He definitely said Jared. I'll keep looking. When all the reports came out I saved them in a file but then I lost everything when I had to re-format my hard drive. :(

In light of Chicago and the amazingly precious restaurant story, I can't even think of the eyelash scene in Provenance without thinking of Jensen doing that same thing to Jared in the restaurant ;-) Of course, we don't know for SURE if it was an eyelash that Jensen was so graciously removing from Jared's face - in total view of about 10 strangers in a bar- but it's a good guess nevertheless ;-)

Honestly until Heart I thought he did have sex with her(and frankly he still could have except they made such a big deal out of it in Heart I figure he didn't). Otherwise it seemed silly to make such a point of him going back to give her that kiss and everything.

I don't think it would have been out of character either. He took an art history class to meet girls. He was a 22 year old guy who prior to Jessica's death and prior to meeting her even I assume had a fairly normal libido and ideas on meeting girls. It had been close to a year since Jessica's death, it wouldn't have been horrible if he'd had sex with this sweet, spirited girl who clearly liked him and wanted to do the same.

So I would rather they hadn't changed it, because final scene aside, I really thought Heart kind of sucked as an episode. :) It would have made more sense with Sarah, whom he clearly had an affinity for than Madison who was just kind of there to be Old Yeller.

Did you see the post above yours, by dairwendan, who thought it would've been great if Sam did sleep with Sarah, then instead of Madison in Heart, it's Sarah who gets turned into the werewolf and Sam has to kill her. I loved the scene where they are jumping over the gate and breaking into the auction house too, the music was great, and it was just so much of an action scene.

I dunno about Sam sleeping with Sarah though. I think it was good that it didn't happen for all the reasons others do. I don't think it was the right time for it, and besides that i think Sarah was a bit innocent to just jump in like that. Madison was much more worldly and i could understand her jumping Sam.

I would prefer Sarah or Madison to the two girls in the show now,i really dislike them, for reasons unknown to me actually but i think they are just bitchy. But what do i expect,they are demons! lol
