Truer words were never spoken

Go on, raise your hand. I know it's more than just me out there. :-)
Speaking of animals, I did my good deed for the day yesterday by donating through Groupon to Vested Interest. They're a non-profit organization who raises money to buy bullet proof and stab proof vests for K9 dogs for police departments across the country. Four dogs were already killed in the line of duty in just January 2014 because they did not have vests.
Having spent time with a K9 unit back when I was doing my citizen police academy classes (and also research for my story Shadows in his Eyes) I know how important these animals are. We expect them to protect us, yet we give them no protection in return. That is unacceptable.
So I applaud Vested Interest and their cause, but why does an outside company have to do this? Why aren't the police departments themselves providing these life saving vests? They provide their human officers with vests. Why not their K9 ones?
As of this morning more than 5,000 people had donated $10.00 each. For every $950 Vested Interest can purchase one vest. That means that 53 vests can be purchased so far.
If you'd like to donate via Paypal to help save these brave animals please go to Vested Interest's website: http://www.vik9s.org
You never know if one of these dogs might save your life one day.
