So the Styx / Foreigner / Kansas concert on Saturday night was INSANE. And I don't really mean it in a good way.

I'd never been to the venue it was being held at, right on the shores of Lake Michigan, called the Charter One PAVILION. Only guess what? There was no pavilion! It was OPEN AIR. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but it was raining heavily on and off all day.

After some deliberation between myself, charityflint and her husband, we decided to chance it and go downtown. Because if it ended up not raining and we didn't go we'd be kicking ourselves. So armed with our rain ponchos (umbrellas weren't allowed) we trekked off to the city.

At first everything was okay. It started to sprinkle a bit while we were in line waiting to get in but it stopped pretty quickly. We got in, got our official concert t-shirts and found our seats, which were great - dead center and not all that far back.

Kansas was up first, and about 10 minutes before they started the skies just opened up with a downpour and everyone scrambled into their ponchos. Thankfully the weather was warm (in the upper 80's), so the rain wasn't cold, and we were just laughing and singing along to the music that was being piped in, when Charity's husband snapped this pic of us:

We were doing our best impersonations of a blueberry and a tomato. :-)

The rain finally let up as Kansas came on (opening with Point of No Return. Sweet!) and we all started rocking out. But then halfway through the downpour started again. Then once again it stopped, right before Kansas ended, with of course, Carry on Wayward Son. WOOT!! I've never seen Kansas in concert before, so it was SO cool to hear them sing that song. :-)

I recorded part of them singing it with my iPhone, but it's not the best, as the music was a bit too loud for the speakers on my phone.

There was a break before Foreigner came on and the weather remained nice, thankfully, so Charity and I posed with our official concert t-shirts. :-) You can see the Sears Tower (yes, it will ALWAYS BE the Sears Tower) sticking out between our heads. *g* The view of the Chicago skyline from the venue was just beautiful. When it got dark you could see the buildings had turned their lights on to make the shape of the Stanley Cup, the Blackhawks logo and also the word Hawks. It was very cool!

Throughout the entire Foreigner concert not a drop of rain fell. It was great! They were AWESOME. Out of the three bands they're my favorite and they had us all on our feet, clapping and singing at the top of our lungs.

But then as they finished up and left the stage the evening took a turn for the worse. Once again dark clouds rolled in and it was another downpour and it never stopped. Styx came on, and in the middle of their second song, in the span of a heartbeat, the temperature dropped at LEAST twenty degrees, the wind was getting crazy and the rain was coming down sideways.

It was getting completely miserable and this just wasn't any fun anymore. We were watching as the huge lighting rig above the stage started to swing from side to side. Six guys ran out and grabbed onto these ropes hanging down, three on each side, and were straining to keep the rig from swinging.

The weather only got worse and worse. The wind was - I can't even describe how strong it was. At least 50 mph, i kid you not. I mean, Charity and I got caught outside in New Orleans in the middle of a tropical storm, and it wasn't this bad. It was insane, truly.

After Styx sang their fourth song they were told to cancel the concert. The weather was just too dangerous at this point. Needless to say, everyone was disappointed. I never even got to hear Renegade or my favorite, Come Sail Away. :-(

The walk back to Soldier Field, where the parking garage was, was unbelievable. I've never been outside in wind like that before. It was so strong that a light pole blew down and landed across the sidewalk where we were!

When we finally made it back to the car, we turned the radio on and found out there was a TORNADO WATCH going on! No wonder the weather was so crazy!

So unfortunately the evening didn't quite go as planned, but we at least got to see two of the three bands. It was a night I'll never forget! LOL!
