Supernatural - Beginning's End #6
So I picked up the final issue tonight of Supernatural: Beginning's End...

So this is it, the issue that explains why Sam up and left for Stanford...
Issue #5 left off with John Dee having kidnapped Sam and opening up a gate to Hell. Issue #6 starts off with Dee wanting to make a deal with a demon. But we don't know what demon yet. Dee tells the demon that he did what he asked - lured the Winchesters to New York and captured Sam and now he thinks he's going to be rewarded.
But suddenly John bursts through the door and shoots Dee dead. John goes to untie Sam, but Sam looks up - and he's got yellow eyes!
Although he's never directly referred to as Azazel, that's who it is. So he's possessing Sam and he tells John that Sam's still in there, and boy, does he hate John. Both John and Dean threaten to shoot, but Azazel knows they won't hurt Sam's body.
So he throws Dean into a wall and then touches John on the head, giving him a vision of Sam getting stabbed in the back by Jake and of Dean getting mauled by a werewolf. Azazel says that these are visions of what's to come for his boys - that they're going to suffer and hurt and scream and burn.
Then Azazel shows John the night that he killed Mary. John wants to know why he's telling him this. Azazel says that he's not done with John by a long shot, that he's got big plans for him and the boys. That everything happens for a reason - his reason.
Then they're back in the present and John pulls out a knife and Azazel laughs at him. John then proceeds to cut himself on his chest and recite a Latin chant. It pulls the black smoke out of Sam's body and into John's. John then tells Dean that he has to kill him while he's got the demon trapped inside him. But of course Dean can't do it and Azazel escapes from John's body and disappears.
Back at some house they're staying at, Sam is unconscious on the couch while John and Dean talk. Dean apologizes for letting John down, by not killing him. John says it's okay, he didn't let him down, that he'll always be proud of Dean. But Dean promises it won't happen again. John says not to worry, because Dean's a good kid and he's going to train Sam for the job instead.
John says Sam's harder, because he didn't have a little brother or a mother, and that he hates John. Dean says he only hates him because he thinks John hates HIM. But John says he loves Sam, he just can't let him know that. Dean wants to know why. John says that he needs one of them to be hard, so that when they find the YED again, that even if John's life is on the line again he knows that Sam will pull the trigger.
Sam then wakes up and John purposely goads him into another verbal fight. John tells Sam that if he's so miserable then he belongs at Stanford. Both Sam and Dean are shocked that John knows about the acceptance letter, but John says he always knows what's going on in his family.
John says to Sam that he's started to leave a hundred times but he always comes back. When is he going to grow a pair and do it right? Dean tries to get John to stop, but Sam picks up his bag and John tells him if he walks out the door to not bother coming back.
Sam walks out the door and John tells Dean that they'll keep an eye on him and that Dean should go after him, that Sam needs him. So Dean follows and gets Sam to stop walking for a minute. He tries to make Sam understand that John didn't mean what he said, that he really loves Sam. But Sam's not buying it. He says he's sorry he's not like Dean. That he can't do anything right, he's a screw up, not perfect like Dean. He tells Dean that what John's doing, hunting the YED, is slow-motion suicide and that he's dragging he and Dean down with him, but he's not going to let it happen to him, and Dean shouldn't either.
But Dean says he can't leave John alone, that he needs them. Sam turns his back and starts walking away, saying, "Later, Dean." and Dean watches him go, a tear falling down his face.
Dean goes back inside the house, only to find John gone and the keys to the Impala sitting there for him. The comic ends with Dean, all alone, sitting slumped in a chair in the dark.

Ok, wow, where do I start with this mess? I give Dabb and Loflin credit for trying to tie in the events of the series (Sam getting stabbed, foreshadowing that Sam might have to kill John) but it just doesn't work.
The biggest glaring error is bringing the YED into this. We're lead to believe in the show that John has no idea what killed Mary until the phone call he makes to Dean and Sam in Scarecrow, when he tells them he found out it was a demon. But now he's known all along?? WTF? Messing up canon like this is just ridiculous.
And wow, isn't John "father of the year" here? He figures that Dean is too soft to be able to kill his own father, so let's train the other son into being cold and unfeeling and hating him and forcing him to leave so that he WILL kill him later on - and then he turns around and abandons Dean! Throughout this entire series Dabb and Loflin succeeded in making John into a real asshole.
This is now the third SPN comic series that has failed spectacularly, for the simple reason that they're unable to stick to canon events in the show! How hard is that to do?? I mean, Dabb and Loflin are writers on the show for crying out loud and even they can't get it right!
Wildstorm needs to hire some of us fanfic writers and artists and we'll show them how a comic can be done.
So if any of you were waiting to find out how the comic series ended before deciding whether to purchase it or not - save your money and buy the just released Season 1 DVDs on Blu Ray instead. :-)

Honestly these guys never get it right.

They don't! And it's ridiculous. I can't believe this is the THIRD series of comics to suck so bad. I mean, do they have NO fact checkers? If you're creating original characters and a universe that's one thing, but if you're playing in an existing sandbox then things had better match up! Grrr...

Ooooh, was that supposed to be a hellhound?? Ok, that makes way more sense!
when they reference the Crystal skull and Indiana Jones.
The funny thing is, to me, that was actually the best issue in this latest series. :-)
