I chose sam/dean because I prefer toppy!sam. When I was into Final Fantasy fanfiction they would normally put the person who is topping first then the character who bottoms last, if they switch then they would put s/d, d/s so people reading the fics know in advance. Kinda stuck to the habit...

Oh, interesting! I didn't know some fandoms listed the pairings like that. I can see how you'd stick to that then. :-)
I'm cool with the other people reading/writing SPN slash, it's just not my cup of tea. :)
While I'd consider reading/writing SPN slash (meaning Dean/OMC or Sam/OMC), I'm not sure I personally see it in their characters. A good enough writer can change my mind though.
I respect people's right to reading/writing Wincest & RPS so long as they respect mine not to read/write it and everyone usually does :-)
I read mostly J2, though I like wincest too, but wincest has a lot more room for angst and I don't always feel like angsting. J2 can be stretched any way :) I don't read gen cause I prefer the show's canon (meaning I don't even read the books about what happened before, or the comics, and whatever there is, even if Kripke OKs them) Toppy Jensen all the way, like, BDSM toppy, I guess cause Jared is taller :) But toppy Sammy, cause... you know. Dean. SamnDean and JensennJared when I talk but JarednJensen when I write, and not cause of the tops but that's just how it flows.
I love the Wincest, and gen stories about the brothers are just as wonderful. I'm still very squicked out by RPF in any form. With fictional characters there could be incestuous pedophile necrophelia beastiality porn and it would still be fictional, you know? There's still no chance of the characters ever reading it.
I'm even squicked by people calling Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles "Jared and Jensen". It implies that they're personal friends or something. Or maybe I'm just too British *g*
You know, I felt the same way until I got into SPN fandom, and with the way Jensen and Jared are around each other I just suddenly felt non-squicked by it. :-)

I liked the way you put that. :-)

Well, the two of them have given every indication that they are extremely good friends, with all the interviews over the years so I guess that doesn't bother me at all. :-)
Glad you liked the poll! Thanks for playing. :-) Even though I've written one RPS AU, I find myself these days preferring the non-AU ones, probably because most of the AU's written lately take place in college, and I'd rather the boys not be 20 or 21. [shrug]
I voted gen, all the way. (Except for what I won't read, naturally.)
Although I don't go looking for wincest, sometimes I'll read it, if I like the author or the plot sounds intriguing. I've read RPS, but really, I only enjoy the AU-type stories...where the setting is very obviously not our world, and where Jensen and Jared are just as much characters in the story as Sam and Dean are on Supernatural. I just like to have that division from reality, I guess.

You're not the first to have said that, actually. That as long as Jared and Jensen aren't really themselves then you don't mind. And there's quite a lot of AU's around so you can still enjoy RPS if you want. :-)
this was kind of a hard poll for me to do, so I thought I better explain a few things. first of all, the wincest does squick me out a bit (sorry for those of you who are into it, no offense meant), but I will not rule out a story just because its got wincest in it. as long as the wincest isn't the integral part of the story and its easily skimmable, then I'll check it out. the funny thing is, when it comes to our boys, I have the same attitude about het. unless its a one shot, or crackity crack mccrack, there are only rare occasions where I like to see the boys in relationships. so long story short, wincest squicks me and het is usually annoying in anything longer than a one shot.
it figures, because of the logistics, this is the first fandom where I've ever gotten into rps. that's where I get my slash fix when I need it. besides, there are some sweet au type stories out there featuring our boys. and lots of funny pwp stories too!
for spn though, my strongest preference is for gen. I like it as close to canon as possible.
For the first question, I probably actually read about equal amounts of Wincest and RPS but that wasn't an option. I said Wincest because I suspect there's slightly more of it that I've read, but it's very close.
I don't read genfic, it just doesn't interest me and I prefer the way the show tells the stories. Watching the show IS my gen, I read fanfic for other stuff. I'd always rather rewatch an episode than read a genfic.
I've bought a number of fanzines but in only one fandom (not SPN). If there was a good slash fanzine I would definitely buy it.
Hey, thank you so much for taking the time to fill out my poll and for giving me insight into your answers. I really appreciate it!
You're not the first person to say they don't like to read gen fic because they prefer canon, the eps themselves, instead. I think that's really interesting!
Traditionally (thirty years of fandom, here), slash pairings tended to be higher 'rank', more dominant personality first: Kirk/Spock, Napoleon/Illya, Blake/Avon, but Avon/Villa, Starksy/Hutch (equal partners, but Starsky having the more dynamic personality as well as being named first in the show's title), and later Spike/Zander, but Angel/Spike. In most multipairing fandoms, the 'universal' part of the pairing tended to be first: Mulder/Whoever, for instance, even though Mulder was usually written as a definite 'bottom' in Mulder/Skinner stories (I never read Mulder/Krycek, so I'm uncertain of the dnamic there). As relationships and pairings got more complex, the order seemed more flexible (see Firefly fandom).
I think because (for some unknown, at least to me, reason), Jared got first billing on the show, Sam/Dean and Jared/Jensen seemed to come about fairly organically for most, though Sam/Dean felt odd to me at first even though I just went with the flow.
But then, J2 is more common than J/J and speaks more to their equality to me, and Sam became so obviously the center of Dean's universe that Sam/Dean seems natural now. To me, the order has never been about who's more 'toppy', in a sexual sense, though.

Oh, same here. For me, it's honestly just been how I prefer to say the names. Sam/Dean and Jensen/Jared rolls off the tongue easier for me, so that's how I've always listed the pairings. :-)
In general, fandom has gotten so huge and diverse it's harder to come to a consensus these days, but I think in a way you're right: the majority go with what sounds good to them, and failing that, what is most often seen and used.
I only ever read character slash before this fandom - RPS always squicked me. And when I first heard of Wincest, I backed away slowly. But there is something about the world of this show that seems to find ways to justify it. And there are some AMAZING writers in this fandom that suck me in, no matter what my preconceptions. As for RPS, I'll read J2 but my favorite is RPS AU, because it removes the actors from their private lives and they become more like characters. It's slightly less creepy to me that way. And after this fandom, I realize that I will *truly* have arrived as a t.v. actor when someone slashes me in fanfic. ;) -Samazon

Oh man, me, too! I don't know what it is about this fandom. First I'm writing incest and then I'm writing real person slash! I've been totally and utterly corrupted. But gosh, I don't seem to mind one bit! LOL!

That's exactly how I see it, too. I mean, I couldn't ever see slashing the brothers from Numb3rs, you know?

Several people who left me comments here said the exact same thing. :-)

Nothing wrong with that at all! I was just curious to see where everyone on my flist stood and I've got a good mix here, which is great. :-)
