First look at Supernatural's new comic!

TV Guide's website has an article up about the next six-issue Supernatural comic, coming this spring, called Rising Son.

Here's just a little blurb:

Set a few years after Origins, the story picks up with an 11-year-old Dean and a seven-year-old Sam traveling with their father John. "Whereas the first series was more about John and his becoming a hunter, this one's much more of a dysfunctional family story," explains writer Peter Johnson, who's also a co-executive producer on the TV show. "We're really going to explore the differences between Sam and Dean in this one. Dean is becoming aware of what his dad's up to and we'll see him training and hunting a little bit, while John will start to key in on something different about Sam."

Also, thank you GOD there's gonna be a different artist this time around. I only hope the stories are much better, because frankly, Origins sucked. But with Sam and Dean being older, I'm hoping that means they'll be more involved in this series of comics.

First Look! Supernatural's Graphic New Stories

There are only four episodes of Supernatural to go before the writers' strike puts the demon-hunting Winchester brothers on hiatus. But fans of the CW spookfest will get to enjoy the show in an alternative format this spring when WildStorm, an imprint of DC Comics, launches Supernatural: Rising Son, a six-issue miniseries. Following up on last year's well-received Supernatural: Origins, this new arc debuts April 23.

Johnson says readers should expect "freakier monsters," including "some bad ass female villains and a big bad villain that may have something to do with the TV show." Some familiar faces, including fellow hunter Bobby, also show up. There's a different artist this time around, Diego Olmos (Manhunter), known for his detail and facial expressiveness, but the writer's strike has temporarily sidelined Supernatural showrunner Eric Kripke, who had major input in Origins.

A third series is in the planning stages, which, Johnson hints, could bring the story right up to the TV show's pilot. And here's some more good news: a trade paperback collection of Origins will be published in April and "there will be slight tweaks in the collected version," Johnson reveals. "I was sensitive to a lot of fan feedback that the Impala [the show's signature automobile], in my story, was something John picked up on the road. That did not sit well with the fans, so I decided to make an editorial change, so that the Impala is already in the Winchester family when the series opens."

I couldn't even read the other ones; the art just hurt my eyes too much! (and then I heard they were disappointing) But this art looks quite promising, I think!

YES!!!

Ohh, I am just over the moon over this! There's light, and you can see their faces. Now I really can't wait for this. I hope this is Dustin "21 Jumpstreet" Nguyen; it would be so cool.

New 'Supernatural' Comic Book Series Starting in April
Wednesday, January 16, 2008
Fans who enjoyed the Supernatural: Origins comic book series published by WildStorm last year will definitely want to check out Supernatural: Rising Son, a six-issue miniseries that will tell another story about the young Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. The first issue is set to hit stores on April 23 and will pick up a few years after Origins, following a 7-year-old Sam and 11-year-old Dean as they travel with their father, John. "Whereas the first series was more about John and his becoming a hunter, this one's much more of a dysfunctional family story," explains writer Peter Johnson, who's also a co-executive producer on the TV show.

"We're really going to explore the differences between Sam and Dean in this one," Johnson continues. "Dean is becoming aware of what his dad's up to and we'll see him training and hunting a little bit, while John will start to key in on something different about Sam."

The bad news about the series is that show creator Eric Kripke, who had a lot of input on Origins, couldn't have any involvement due to the writers' strike. While the strike doesn't preclude people from writing comic books, Kripke bowed out due to the thin line between writing for a TV series and writing a comic based on a TV series.

Despite that, Johnson promises that the Rising Son story will fit in nicely with the show, and even feature some familiar faces such as Bobby, a fellow demon hunter. He also says that readers should expect "freakier monsters," including "some badass female villains and a big bad villain that may have something to do with the TV show."

For those who missed Origins in its single issue format, a trade paperback collecting the entire series will be published in April. Johnson also mentions that he made an editorial change in the collected edition regarding the Winchester's signature Chevy Impala. In the original comic the Impala was something John found on the road, but due to the protests of fans it will now be something that was in the Winchester family prior to the beginning of the comic series.

There's already talk of a third miniseries being planned that would bring the story right up to the pilot of the television series. Even with Supernatural being sidelined due to the writers' strike, fans of the Winchester boys should have plenty of demon slaying fun to indulge in for months to come.

Since Kripke's involvement in Origins didn't prevent it from being wildly non-canon, I don't know that his non-involvement will make any difference or not.
