Ratings for All Hell Breaks Loose, part 1

From Marc Berman at the Programming Insider:

Also in the 9-10 p.m. hour (in addition to NBC’s aforementioned The Office and Scrubs) was a second episode of Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader (Viewers: #3, 8.61 million; A18-49: #4, 2.9/ 8), and The CW’s Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 2.84 million; A18-49: #5, 1.2/ 3). Although this is only speculation, I am will to bet that upcoming CW drama Reaper will inherit the Thursday 9 p.m. hour out of Smallville, with Supernatural moving to Sunday next season. What do you think?

Half hour breakdown:

Supernatural
9:00 p.m. V: 2.90 million, A18-49: 1.2/ 3
9:30 p.m. V: 2.79 million, A18-49: 1.2/ 3

For comparison:

Top Model: 4.94 million
Gilmore Girls: 3.96 million
Smallville: 3.36 million
One Tree Hill: 2.95 million
Girlfriends (one hour finale): 2.88 million
Everybody Hates Chris: 2.58 million
All of Us: 2.44 million
Veronica Mars: 1.88 million

~~~~
Ok, wow - 2.84 million? That's really, really not good. :-( That makes it the second lowest rated this season, just above BUABS, which had 2.83 million. And when the absolute final numbers are posted later tonight, All Hell may slip down down to last place. How could the first part of a season finale do so badly?? This makes me so incredibly frustrated.
Not sure what I think about SPN maybe moving to Sunday. I want it off Thursday but is Sunday a good fit for our show?
I'm thinking that the low ratings might be because CSI and Grey's had much more highly promoted finale event things going on. But still, wow, that sucks.
[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I guess what I don't understand is - do we have that many...fringe fans, for lack of a better word, that only watch SPN sporatically? That if the plot on Grey's or CSI sounds better they won't bother with SPN? Man, that saddens me.
Consider how long "Charmed" survived in a Sunday time slot -- No real competition when it was on. But there's Cold Case and Desperate Housewives The CW's performance on Sunday this season wasn't that good.
[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
X-Files is the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about the Sunday thing. It nearly got canceled being on Friday nights, but as soon as it was moved to Sunday it took off like a rocket. And we're of the same type of genre show, so perhaps SPN can flourish there as well.
I just want it away from Thursday! Idealy, I'd like it put back on Tuesday, where it did really, really well.
The moving to Sunday makes me think of the WB's squedule, where Charmed occupied the Sunday position.
Now the low ratings? I don't get them, just don't get them.
[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Between Charmed and XF both being on Sunday and both lasting for a very long time, there's good reason to think that SPN could flourish there as well. I know I wouldn't mind the switch, just to get away from CSI and Grey's!
But the ratings? Like you, I just don't understand. :-(
[identity profile] katikat.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at least Smallville was down 200 000 too. It was the whole evening, both Smallville and SPN went down the same number of viewers.
[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Man, Smallville's been sinking like a rock lately, hasn't it? At least SPN has been pretty consistant, with just a few bumps this year. Our retention rate is still excellent, so that's a good sign.
*shrug* Some people REALLY hate cliffhangers. I would be one of 'em, and will be watching the ep on the website just before part 2.
[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd just heard that a lot of people were going to do that, and if that's what happened, it hurt SPN in an extreme way. Not a good thing to have happen right before the decision is made whether to renew it or not.
[identity profile] cosmicbubble.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
aww, poop :o(
it shows on a sunday in the UK..not sure of all of the programmes that it's up against, but it beats 24 according to the latest ratings.
[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, it beats 24 in the UK? That's awesome!
The final numbers actually went up a little - and a rumored CW schedule
[identity profile] sen1995.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
And when the absolute final numbers are posted later tonight, All Hell may slip down down to last place. How could the first part of a season finale do so badly?? This makes me so incredibly frustrated.
Barb, first of all, I certainly feel your frustration. How are people not flocking to this show? But both GA and CSI had some stunt May sweeps stuff (Lady Heather was back on CSI and GA - well, I really have no idea what they were doing but I remember seeing lots of commercials), and for some reason there seem to be a lot of people who need to find out if they are smarter than a 5th grader. Well, we know we are because we are smart enough to watch SPN!
Travis posted the final numbers to Marc's forum - they were (I'm including SV, too, for comparison):
Smallville
- 3.430 million viewers
- 2.2/4 HH
- 1.4/4 A18-49
- 1.5/6 A18-34
Supernatural
- 2.901 million viewers
- 1.7/3 HH
- 1.2/3 A18-49
- 1.2/4 A18-34
So we still had 85% retention out of SV, which is good in anyone's book, especially considering the competition.
And there is a rumored CW schedule making the rounds:
Monday
Everybody Hates Chris
Aliens in America
Girlfriends
The Game
Tuesday
Beauty and the Geek
One Tree Hill
Wednesday
America's Next Top Model
Gossip Girl
Thursday
Smallville
Reaper
Friday
WWE Smackdown!
Saturday
Off the air
Sunday
CW Now
Viewsers
Wild at Heart
Supernatural
Midseason
The World According to Barnes
The site that posted this (and it has been repeated on one of Marc's forums) is here:
http://www.nku.edu/~manningj1/PilotBuzzCentral.htm
The site further states: This new and updated schedule was provided by someone who works closely with the CW for their promotions and who was given these combinations to work with for graphic designs.
I personally would love to see SPN moved to Sunday, for several reasons. First, anything is better than Thursday at 9:00. Second, Desperate Housewives, while still pulling in fairly large numbers, is down a lot from last year and hopefully will continue to fall. I tried to keep watching it after they unceremoniously dropped RB as a regular, but I frankly got tired of the continuing saga of Susan's bad choices, the annoying new Scavo child and her crazy mother, etc., etc. I watch Cold Case at 9:00 now, but only because I have no reason to change the channel after The Amazing Race. I checked Marc's column for last Sunday night at 9:00 and found this:
ABC dominated at 9 p.m. courtesy of Desperate Housewives at 16.92 million viewers and a 6.5/16 among adults 18-49, but one year earlier the final national performance was a considerably heftier 21.33 million viewers and an 8.6/20 among adults 18-49. Do the math, and that’s a decrease of 4.41 million viewers and 24 percent among adults 18-49. Am I the only one fed up with Susan’s annoying shtick? How did Mike happen to find her in the woods so easily? CBS’ competing, and older-skewing, Cold Case was second in total viewers (13.63 million) but fourth among adults 18-49 (3.2/8).
NBC that night had a special SNL program - they usually air Deal or No Deal there - I think DOND is going to wear itself out, much like Who Wants to be a Millionaire did a few years ago.
I think SPN would pull in a different viewer, guys that don't watch DH, younger people that don't watch Cold Case, etc. And like you, Barb, I remember how well XF did in the time period for lots of years. And for a purely selfish reason, I would finally have something to watch again after 9:00 on Sundays.
If this schedule is in fact true, I hope the fact that CW will be rerunning SPN on Sunday nights this summer will get people use to seeing the show there.
Lastly, someone posted a link to a site where someone uploaded one of those Verizon special clips, this one from next week's episode (I predict it will be a director's cut soon). I know you won't want to watch it, Barb - it is definitely spoilery, but in case anyone here does want to see it, go here:
OMG, I'm trying to figure out how they get out of this but, oh, our poor, broken Dean . . . .
I'm a CSI fan, too, have been since the beginning, but that episode? Boring! And I didn't even really understand it! People chose that over SPN?? It kinda saddens me that we have so many fringe fans, that pick and choose what episode of SPN to watch. :-(
Well thank goodness the numbers actually went UP. That doesn't happen too often and I was certain AHBL1 would drop down to last place. Still, 2.90 is nothing to get excited over, you know? Thanks for giving me the final numbers. I hadn't had a chance to go back to Marc's site and find them.
I, too, wouldn't mind seeing SPN move to Sunday's next year, for all of the reasons you stated. I think it could do well there, if given the chance. Looks like we'll find out on Thursday! [bites nails]
SPN renewed for Season 3?? And additional news about upcoming books.
[identity profile] sen1995.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Just saw this at www.winchesterfan.com:
SUPERNATURAL RENEWED FOR 3RD SEASON?
An insider with CW has said off the record that cult hit Supernatural has been renewed for next season. A fan at WonderFest (taking place right now in Louisville, KY) approached a CW affiliate and asked him point blank, to which he stated that yes, the series has been picked up for a full twenty-two episodes for next season.
The official announcement will not be made for a while, but perk up.
Supernatural follows the adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester and their 1967 Chevy Impala. The boys are carrying on their father's legacy of hunting urban legends and other beasties, protecting the innocent, yadda yadda yadda. Lots of fans just tune in for the pretty. Now there will be twenty-two more opportunities for same.
So it's certainly not official news, but it's one more positive sign - God, I wish CW would just come out and tell us already! Boy, I can't wait for Thursday for so many reasons!
winchesterfan.com also has an article about some of the upcoming companion books. In part it says:
SCI FI Wire is reporting that Titan Books has acquired worldwide publishing rights for the official companion books to The CW's best show, "Supernatural".
The first book, which will be very imaginatively titled "Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 1", is scheduled for a US release in September, with a U.K. release in October. According to the article, the book will contain "...behind-the-scenes interviews and exhaustive episode guides" and "dozens of photos, including a 16-page full-color supplement". Pretty good stuff.
Jensen's take on a 3rd season . . . and beyond
[identity profile] sen1995.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Someone who attended the Asylum Con in the UK today has posted to her LJ - including pictures of Jensen (see my icon) - someone asked him about a third season and she reports that, while he doesn't know, he says it looks good and that he hopes the show will go for 3 or 4 more years (at least she thinks that’s the number he said.
And just for you, Barb, she also said someone asked about "A Few Good Men" and he said that he is VERY nervous about the play, that he hasn’t done stage acting in 11 years, and he’s definitely nervous - he also said he's not sure about how he will portray the character but he's excited about doing the play.
Her LJ is here: http://users.livejournal.com/_sin_attract/119541.html
Poor Jensen - she reports that some girl jumped off a staircase right onto him - must have scared the cr*p out of him. I wish Jared had been there to take her down.
She just added video of Jensen singing with Jason Manns
[identity profile] sen1995.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Video, Barb - if I didn't know better I would be thinking you were there!
Two videos can be seen here: http://users.livejournal.com/_sin_attract/119936.html#cutid1
Enjoy! I sure wish they had better lighting in that room (which seems awfully small for 700 fans).
Video, Barb - if I didn't know better I would be thinking you were there!
LOL! You know me too well, Deborah! :-)
Man, I wish Jensen had stepped a bit closer to the mic so that we could've heard his beautiful voice just a bit better. :-) But the fact that he got up there at all, in front of all those people to sing just floors me!
And yeah, you noticed that the room seemed awfully small to hold 700 people, too, eh? It looked so clausterphobic in there!
Re: Jensen's take on a 3rd season . . . and beyond
[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Boy, what's with these CW actors going on summer hiatus and immediately growing funky facial hair?? LOL! Jensen did it last summer, too! Remember the pics of him and Tom and Mike, all with facial fuzz? Thankfully he'll have to be clean shaven for A Few Good Men. :-)
Three or four more years? From your mouth to the CW's ears, Jensen!!
So he's nervous about the play, eh? :-) Ah, by the time it gets to Friday night when I see him, he'll be rockin'!
I heard about the lunatic fan and I want to just...stomp on her. One idiot like that can ruin it for everyone, you know? I'm so afraid that he won't come out the stage door in Dallas because of that. :-(
And if Jared had been there, she'd never have even reached Jensen!
Variety article appears to say that SPN has been renewed
[identity profile] sen1995.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Just saw an article that appeared in Variety on Friday - the article is about the CW, how it fared in its first year and what it needs to do going forward. There's only one mention of SPN, but the word Supernatural is preceded by the word returning in the article. The article begins as follows:
The CW still seeks its signature series
Network survives first season
By JOSEF ADALIAN
It's crunch time for the CW.
The lovechild of CBS Corp. and Warner Bros. has survived its first season, a little battered but still kicking. It didn't turn a profit in its first season (contrary to what its leaders had boldly predicted), but it also didn't suffer the sort of wholesale viewer rejection that some believed was a very real possibility.
That's largely because the net deliberately avoided serving up much new programming during season one, focusing its energies on getting auds to tune in their old WB and UPN faves on CW. It worked well enough: Ratings for the new net were about the same as what either the WB or UPN had been averaging.
"Last year was a year for viewers to find a new network and for us to find ourselves," says CW Entertainment prexy Dawn Ostroff.
Next season promises to be tougher.
The CW is desperately looking for its "Dawson's Creek" -- a buzzworthy show that can help put it on the map as its own entity.
THE STRATEGY
With "Gilmore Girls" and "7th Heaven" both goners, it's a sure bet CW will launch at least two dramas in the fall. Unless the net chooses to move its Monday comedy block, the new blood will likely be paired with reality skeins on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thursdays should stay stable at 8, with "Smallville" leading into either the returning "Supernatural" or a new skein.
The entire article appears here:
What do you think?
I also found another Variety article, entitled ABC, CBS frontrunners in sweeps/networks off to a fast start which was posted on Sunday, April 29, 2007 and talks about the first few days of May sweeps. The article says in part, talking about Thursday night (note: this would have been the night Folsom Prison Blues aired):
Fox was solid at 8 with "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" (3.5/10 in 18-49, 10.13m) but fell back at 9 with "Trading Spouses" (1.9/5 in 18-49, 4.76m), while the CW's "Smallville" (1.5/4 in 18-49, 3.88m) was off about 20% vs. the same night a year ago on the WB, but lead-out "Supernatural" (1.3/3 in 18-49, 3.33m) was on par.
The entire article is here:
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117963972.html?categoryid=1275&cs=1&query=Supernatural
After reading, I looked for an article about that Thursday night in particular and found one, which pretty much echoes the article above. It says in pertinent part:
Fox was solid at 8 with "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" (third-place 3.4/10 in 18-49, 10.0 million viewers overall) but fell back at 9 with "Trading Spouses" (2.1/5 in 18-49, 5.3 million viewers overall), while CW's "Smallville" (1.5/4 in 18-49, 3.9 million viewers overall) was off about 20% vs. the same night a year ago on the WB but lead-out "Supernatural" (1.4/3 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall) was on par with its 2006 numbers.
That entire article appears here:
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117963915.html?categoryid=1275&cs=1
That's it. Boy, you are going to be sick of hearing from me today, Barb!
Re: Variety article appears to say that SPN has been renewed
The research guru is at it again! :-) Many thanks as always for sharing these articles with me, Deborah.
I loved the "returning Supernatural" comment, but this flip-flopping of the proposed schedule from the other link you sent me is making me crazy! Just put SPN on Sunday and let Reaper get creamed by Grey's and CSI.
And yeah, Smallville's numbers have been steadily dropping this season while for the most part, SPN's numbers have been pretty steady. And we're still maintaining a high retention rate, which is great.
That's it. Boy, you are going to be sick of hearing from me today, Barb!
Ha! Never, Deborah! :-)
