Trick-or-treat?

Well we only had about a dozen trick-or-treaters last night, which was disappointing, considering the very mild weather we had for Chicago. No raincoats or winter jackets over costumes! But the kids we did get were cute and polite and the parents complimented me on our outdoor decorations. :-) How did you all fare with the little candy snatchers? ;-)

We got 103 this year.
We ran out of candy then we started handing out Twinkies and Fig Newtons.

We had like 35 or 40 last year.

Over 100 trick-or-treaters?? Holy cow! That’s freaking awesome! I would have loved that. Twinkies and fig newtons! LOL! Love it!

I think the ever increasing lack of trick-or-treaters every year is because parents are terrified to let their children out, so they take them to the mall and other organized events like that. Sad, really. I loved racing through the neighborhood with my plastic pumpkin.

And that’s why I always buy candy I like, too! LOL!

We had none! The weather was terrible. We think they just stuck to the organized events on Saturday. :)

Even though our weather was very good, I think the ever increasing lack of trick-or-treaters every year is because parents are terrified to let their children out, so they take them to the mall and other organized events like that. Sad, really. I loved racing through the neighborhood with my plastic pumpkin.

Only one here - but then I wasn't home until 7 p.m., and by that time most kids are back home (also Halloween isn't too big in Germany). I usually take leftover candy into the office for my co-workers.

It’s crazy how big Halloween has gotten here in the States over the last 10 years or so. Which is cool!

I have yet to bring my leftover candy into the office this year. Might be snacking on the bowl myself this year. :-)

Very sad indeed. Not just Halloween related, but I think there even was a study recently that showed how little freedom kids these days have to go out on their own, compared to even their parents. When I was a kid I would meet with my friends and we'd go swimming in the muddy river behind the corn fields, ride our bikes around town etc. From what my colleague tells me about his daughter it looks like she's hardly ever unsupervised. Just feels weird...

Growing up, Halloween wasn't a thing at all here, but in the small village where my grandparents lived children would dress up and go from house to house to collect candy during carnival (February/March). It's the only town I know of that did this, and the tradition is still being upheld today. I've got honestly no idea where they got it from. Maybe someone there had ties to the US and got inspired by Halloween ;)

Enjoy the candy! *g*

I only wound up with about six trick or treaters. Which was a bummer. Bought only one bag of candy but it turned out to be too much. Now I have to share( most of the bag going to others). Just have to find out who will want it. So I watched Gotham and Lucifer last night and read.
Did stumble on a new show late last night called People of Earth. Was pretty funny. So I will probably continue with it for awhile. Have a good week.

I watched two episodes of Supernatural like I do every Halloween - Monster Movie and It’s the Great Pumpkin Sam Winchester. :-)

People of Earth sounds so familiar. I think I saw commercials for it on BBC America while I was watching Dirk Gently. It did look funny!

We had about 10, I guess. Makes me sad. I miss the days when the streets were full of kids on Halloween night.

I think the increasing lack of trick-or-treaters is because parents are either getting lazy and don’t want to be bothered taking their kids out, or they just take them to the mall. Sad, really. I used to love tearing around the neighborhood with my plastic pumpkin.

Is Halloween a big deal in the UK like it is here in the States?

I don't live that far from you, so I had the same weather you did, but I didn't get any kids at all.

My friends and I used to try to hit every house in our neighborhood. I remember running home two and three times to empty my candy bag because it was full. And if a kid had a really good costume, people would start calling each other to keep an eye out for it. I know this because my grandmother made my Halloween costumes and I would usually only get about three blocks before people would answer the door and tell me they'd heard about my costume.

For me, the kids come in waves depending on the turnover in my apartment building. Sometimes we have a lot of families with kids, sometimes not. Right now, there's a dearth of kids of trick-or-treating age.
