New Supernatural Comic Series to debut

New Supernatural Comic Series Heads to Caledonia

From DreadCentral.com:

A new six-issue prequel comic series related to the "Supernatural" TV show is launching in October written by Brian Wood with artwork by Grant Bond and cover art by Dustin Nguyen. Entitled Supernatural: Caledonia, it will be an unparalleled adventure in the "Supernatural" saga as the Winchesters travel to Scotland.

Synopsis: On an academic break while at Stanford, Sam Winchester visits the United Kingdom on what is meant to be a sleepy trip...but on his first day he meets the alluring 'Emma of the isles,' and his visit gets a thousand percent less boring!

Having been burned every single time in the past by the horrible SPN comics, I think I'm going to give this one a pass. Especially if it's only about Sam. Sorry, not interested if Dean's not there, too.

Dean's not even in it?? I rather liked the earlier comics -- but the "official" trade paperbacks I think are appalling. Thanks for the notice!

The art is usually horrible. I wish someone would actually do a comic that looks like them.

if it's the same brian wood who wrote demo and local and channel zero and is now doing northlanders, it might not be totally hopeless because he can actually write. altho sam in the uk seems kind of non-spn-y, and the lack of dean is kind of a bummer, so who knows.

agreed. I kind of want to burn the few copies of the first series I grabbed. The art was atrocious!

I have no interest in this comic either for the same reasons as you.

What I find disturbing is that Sam keeps hooking up with female monsters. I just wish someone would get that it says something about Sam and not a good thing either.

I wish there was an art book for the covers of the SPN comics. Because I really like the covers. Oh, and that four page 'Beast with Two Backs' Ghostfacers comic that was in the back of one of the trades. There should be more four page mini-comics, because that one was awesome.

It does say the Winchesters in the story description so it sounds like Dean will be there, too. The cover is pretty, wish the interior art would be as nice.

Oh wow, a book of just the covers would be fantastic. While the inside art for most of the comics really sucked, the covers were really well done. I’d forgotten about the Ghostfacers one! Didn’t Kripke write that?

I really hope Dean is in it, but I can't imagine how, if this takes place while Sam is at Stanford, and he and Dean never saw each other.

The covers for nearly all of the SPN comic series have been fantastic, I just wish they could get competent artists for the inside, too.

Ah you noticed the trend with Sam and the monsters, too? I just get the impression with the comics that they’re all put together half-ass and that no one has actually ever watched the show or even read any of the past comics, so they have no clue as to Sam’s character.

With all of the amazingly talented comic book artists out there, how does SPN consistently get the worst?

[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, thanks for the info on the writer. Perhaps it won’t suck! I’m not really down with Sam going to the UK, though. Just seems too far removed from the show. Then again none of the comics have ever paid the slightest bit of attention to canon. And if Dean truly isn’t in this, they’re just shooting themselves in the foot, sales wise, because the majority of the fans want to read about both brothers.

I couldn’t agree more! With all of the amazingly talented comic book artists out there, how does SPN consistently get the worst?

It certainly doesn’t appear that Dean will be in it, if it’s set during the time Sam was at Stanford, since they never saw one another. Then again none of the comics have ever paid the slightest bit of attention to canon, so who knows!

I think the Rising Son series was the only one I half enjoyed. As for the paperback books, yeah, I’ve only liked one, Witches Canyon.

He did. I don't know if he's written any more, because I only read that one trade, but I'd love a collection of Kripke comics.

Me too, sweetie. Better artwork would sure improve their readability.

I pretty much consider all the comics as AU as they seem to play fast and loose with continuity all of the time. That's why it won't surprise me in the least for Sam and Dean to have an adventure, in another country no less, while he's still in Stanford.

[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It really irritates me that they don’t care that the comics don’t follow canon. What’s the point of them, then? Just come up with a new series with original characters hunting ghosts and monsters. I know if I was Eric Kripke I’d have final say over what goes in the comics. Afterall, he created the show! If he was putting his faith in Peter Johnson to keep things on track he was sorely mistaken from issue #1. There really is no excuse for Peter, who work(s) on SPN to let the comics turn into such a mess.

[identity profile] agt-spooky.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
At least if Kripke himself wrote them they’d actually stick to canon, unlike all of the comics so far!
