WinCon - three days of fangirl fun

Morning, folks!

Just popping on to say that myself and my best buddy [livejournal.com profile] charityflint had a great time at our very first [livejournal.com profile] wincon this past weekend. The panels were many and varied with excellent discussions, no matter what the topic, and it was so nice to finally be able to put faces to so many LJ names. And I made new friends! [waves to [livejournal.com profile] dancetomato , [livejournal.com profile] vorpalblades  and [livejournal.com profile] essene]

Two of the highlights for me were the TinHat Pagent and WinCon Prom.

When I saw that the theme of the TinHat Pagent was 'Shipping Wars, I knew I had to enter to do my OTP proud! Since I'd never entered one of these contests before, I decided to take the theme literally and put a flag, a steering wheel and an anchor on my hat. :-)  I went to town and put all sorts of pics of Jensen and Jared on there, along with stickers and shiny things I found in my craft drawer.

And in the end my craziness paid off and I won!  LOL!  I give you the U.S.S. PADACKLES!  (That's United Slash Ship - heh)

Many kudos go to [livejournal.com profile] charityflint for her help. I turned to her with a grey pipe cleaner and said, "I need to make an anchor with this somehow," and 0.2 seconds later not only did I have an anchor, but a steering wheel, too! LOL!

I won a t-shirt, but [livejournal.com profile] missyjack  didn't have it with her and then I promptly forgot to get it from her the next day.  :-(

Then there was WinCon Prom. Woot! Four hours of crazy singing and dancing with a hundred fangirls decked out in their finest. AWESOME! I had such a great time that night. :-)  I was also the "official" photographer for the prom and took pics of everyone before they went in.

Including one of myself and my "date"...

Do we look fantastic or what?? I was told I looked "dashing" in my suit. :-)

So yeah, it was a weekend made of fun. I unfortunately had to leave before the closing ceremonies and didn't get to say goodbye to folks. [sniff] Did I also miss the announcement of where next year's WinCon was going to be held?

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful three days!

The hat is AWESOME. You've inspired me to make my own tinhat now

LOL! Thank you! I'd never made one before so I was quite happy with the way it turned out. :-)

Would you recommend a fan-organized convention like WinCon to a first-time con-goer or a Creation Con with the actors?

Oh wow, that's a tough call. Creation cons are always totally crazy. There's usually a few thousand fans there. You're running from panels to autograph sessions to photo ops to parties for three days, standing in line for a lot of it. But you also get to see and meet all the actors as a trade off for the craziness. :-)

Fan cons, like WinCon, are much more relaxed. It's like a giant slumber party with a couple hundred fangirls, instead of thousands like at Creation. And at fan cons there are lots of discussion panels or creative type panels (art, songvids, fanfic) where you get a chance to share your views on the show. You don't get that at Creation, as the only panels are the Q&A with the actors.

So it's really a personal preference. If you want to dip your toe into the convention world, go with a fan con. Or if you're feeling more adventurous, jump right into a Creation con. :-)

Thanks for the advice, girl! I went to VanCon this year as my first con and it was a bit overwhelming- I wouldve loved to experience WinCon first, just to ease into things and make more friends first.

But it was still pretty awesome, all things considered. ^.^
